I think the fact that it can be an Uproot but can also do other things makes it less toxic. Kinda like Primal Command, which is a perfectly cromulent magic card.

Fires of Yavimaya Hellkite Hatchling Vengeful Rebirth Wort, the Raidmother Fires because it's a classic, Hatchling because it's cute, Rebirth because the art is gorgeous, and Wort because she's just plain fun.

There's also Bloodroot Apothecary if you want to make it a Gruul thing, but the poison might be a dealbreaker.

I really love these guys with the Magma Opus vertical cycle (and, to a lesser extent, expensive spells with various flavors of cycling): Living Lore Torrent Sculptor Flamethrower Sonata Torrent Sculptor is probably the better of the two cards, but Living Lore's got more pizzazz.
