Sets [OGW] Oath of the Gatewatch Spoiler Thread

Don't get me wrong, I am a design and balance nerd myself. Despite having a high-power cube, I do not subscribe to power-maxing, and have omitted commonplace cards like Ancestral Vision, Treachery , and recently Vedalken Shackles due to how much they tip the scales towards blue in an...

Sets [OGW] Oath of the Gatewatch Spoiler Thread

I listed six cards. I agree, I believe the Soul is outclassed in a cube of my power level, not just by Endbringer, but in totality. If you don't enjoy cubes of that power level, that's alright. My playgroup enjoys the "play with the most powerful cards of Magic's history" aspect of the...

Sets [OGW] Oath of the Gatewatch Spoiler Thread

I feel like you are cherry-picking to prove your point. Thought-Knot is the only one that I feel is really pushed by converting {c} to {1} straight up, and it does probably belong at {5} . Reality Smasher is comparable to Thundermaw Hellkite, Distortion isn't any worse than including Dismember...

Sets [OGW] Oath of the Gatewatch Spoiler Thread

It's clear that from a strict rules perspective, generic mana and colorless mana are not the same and need to be differentiated, but the difference was not remotely confusing or unintuitive to me when I was a 10-year old opening packs of Ice Age and Mirage and playing with my neighbors (and...

Sets [OGW] Oath of the Gatewatch Spoiler Thread

I'm considering just errata-ing several of the diamond-mana cards to cost the equivalent CMC/ability cost in generic mana. There's a lot of interesting cards in this set, but not a high-enough quantity that I want to warp my cube around the 6th-color minigame. Changing the colorless...

General Modifying Mana Costs - enabling previously unviable archetypes

Ooh, I love the Beefbreaker. For G he seems about on par with Figure of Destiny, which is about where I want to be. Level-up creatures are just fun on their own so I'll give him some strong consideration.

General Modifying Mana Costs - enabling previously unviable archetypes

I agree with the gist of what you are saying, and I'm aware of the changes in limited that have occurred in the last half-decade or so to power-down removal. It's a philosophy I've strongly considered for my cube as well. However, I want to limit the scope of this exercise to strictly focusing...

General Modifying Mana Costs - enabling previously unviable archetypes

Great post. I'm especially high on Viridian Emissary as a one-drop - he really makes your opponent think about trading or pointing a removal spell in his direction. Since green aggro will have a side-dish of midrange creatures a lot of the time, the land from Emissary can really make a...

General Modifying Mana Costs - enabling previously unviable archetypes

Hey all, I haven't posted here much, but I really enjoy reading everyone's opinions on various cube topics :) Thought I'd share some musings I've had lately. Background (tl;dr below) ---------------------------- Quick background on my cube: 450 cards, on the powerful side. No...

General Ways to run an online cube draft

Said logistics make me wish that there were a 4-player grid drafting web app available similar to the numerous 8-player drafting apps. I could make one myself, but I just don't have the time to commit.

General Ways to run an online cube draft

Cockatrice is definitely the easiest option for online cubing. It downloads sets and card images with one click, whereas Magic Workstation requires a lot of setup time. Only thing I really dislike about Cockatrice is the slow, laggy UI compared to MWS, but it's superior otherwise.

Card/Deck [MCD] Cards that create Subgames!

If you stick to the qualities I listed in my second post, not really. Also, it's not a true/false distinction - some subgame creators are more playstyle-warping than others. Werewolves are another great example of a subgame, although lower impact than others. And FWIW, the custom cube I'm...

Card/Deck [MCD] Cards that create Subgames!

Awesome suggestions. I wouldn't consider the Shrines or Gargadon as creating subgames, since it's pretty hard for the opponent to interact in a meaningful way. Windbrisk Heights - DING! This is exactly the type of card I'm looking for. A clear objective, methods for both players to interact...

Extremely Sneaky Cube (360) (It's Grozoth Time)

Rise of the Eldrazi has a lot of cards that explicitly play well with large CMC beasts, e.g. Induce Despair, Explosive Revelation, Disaster Radius. Duskmantle Seer also has to be worth some laughs in a cube like this. Another opportunity for mischeif is cheating in your opponent's fatties -...

Card/Deck [MCD] Cards that create Subgames!

I think those cards are solid suggestions Dom, but I don't really think of them as creating subgames. Subgames to me include: 1 - Methods for both players to interact and make decisions in the subgame 2 - Clear objectives for both players, along with payoffs and penalties for winning/losing...
