    General Custom Cards: The Lab

Chandra, the Firebrand is really fun! Which is to say the focus is not on casting big spells for free per se, but instead being a normal control deck with some incidental doubling or other ways to make use of the one or two big spells in your deck. The planeswalker Forks are nice for this...

    General Land Storm

Some of my favorite cube archetypes work this way (loose collections of different verbs with a broad overarching theme)! I think landfall triggers and Awaken the Woods are the only win conditions that have been posted for the deck, though. What about some old tech? Rude Awakening...

General [Contest] Ravnica Reimagined (Entry Closed - Judging in Progress)

Selesnya Mechanic: Flourishing! (You are flourishing if you control more permanents than each of your opponents). Selesnya Grovetender - {1}{G} Creature - Elf Druid (C) When ~ enters the battlefield, create a 1/1 green Saproling token. 1/1 Dawn's Light - {3}{W}{W} Sorcery (U) Create 2 2/2...

    General "Looking for a card"-Thread

I think these are both somewhere between Glorious Anthem (which I think is just "pretty good") and Goblin Bombardment (which I think is often "extremely good"): Glory of Warfare Showdown of the Skalds I was surprised not to find more high-power creatures that fit this description, but I...

A neat "compound verb" in Baldur's Gate 3

I've been playing Baldur's Gate 3 with some friends and wanted to highlight a neat intersection of rules that leads to a very expressive play pattern. My friends are all playing casters (Wizard, Warlock, Cleric), while I'm playing a Barbarian. I'm the only one who's consistently in melee range...

    General Fight Club

In my experience the text "enchant permanent" is worth a lot, and kept Confiscate in my cube for a long time. At six mana, big enchantments and planeswalkers are often on-board already (in addition to creatures and artifacts), so I would guess that even at six mana Confiscate is more powerful...

Sets (WOE) Wilds of Eldraine Spoilers

Is it worth anything that, at baseline, this goes down to {1} to activate after the first activation? Probably not, but I really like this card! I could imagine it as a custom with {2} MV; {1}, {T} to activate.

    General Iconic big creatures

Combustible Gearhulk Torrential Gearhulk Sun Titan Primeval Titan Herald of Anguish This feels about right to me! They are probably too new to be iconic for the game broadly, but I've been cubing with them a long time, so it counts for me. The Herald is probably the least iconic, so you could...

Sets (LTR) The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle Earth

These role-player type cards would be much better (for my cube, at least) as hybrids. Imagine this as a {W/B}{W/B} card! It's not exciting for me as a card that goes in ~10% of decks, but as a card that could feasibly go in any white or black deck it's very elegant-looking.

    General Edict Effects in Cube

Funnily enough, I cut Consuming Vapors in...2015? for being too devastating off of a mana rock. This was before I had a big token theme, and the 2-for-1 plus life gain was way too backbreaking for aggressive decks. Given the previous discussion, it's probably fine now!

    General Edict Effects in Cube

To speak to this for myself: I have less fun playing Magic when I put a card in my deck because it looks fun and then I just lose the game for playing it on curve. Jace's Sanctum is a canonical example - ever played it across the table from a Hero of Oxid Ridge? That's not to say that either...

    General Edict Effects in Cube

Feeling nostalgic about this discussion! A decade back when I was a baby cuber (in the MTGSalvation days), edict effects were popular because tokens were not very popular, and the prevailing attitude towards midrange threats and control finishers was that they had to pass the Terminate test to...

    General Subtheme: Weenie Recursion

I've had good success with many of the cards mentioned here. In particular this approach effectively turns black into another "blink" color: Mire TritonLiliana's SpecterBone Shredder Corpse Knight is the bridge between the two, and a WB deck with Reveillark + Blood Artist + Corpse Knight...
