Sets (MoM) April of the Machines Previews

Hey mods, can we lock this thread? It's generated some good discussion, but it's been almost a week since we should have moved on to the April of the Machines thread.

Sac cards that don't suck!! This looks like a fun middle ground. Mmm, green cantrips. This is almost Mental Note+? I'm always a fan of colors other than blue getting these options, and now it seems like green has half a dozen good options to choose from. Edit: Masterful Ninja'd. Now...

Sets (LTR) The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle Earth

Book thread book thread book thread Fantasy is hard to recommend because a lot of it is genuinely crap, much more so than SF. That said, I'll throw the following ones into the ring: Redwall by Brian Jacques (echoing Bootman, it's nothing groundbreaking but it is heartwarming, kind of like Game...

Is this a playable 3-mana Threaten variant???

Sorry to double-post, but they fixed Lethal Scheme and I couldn't be happier! That card was super dumb in execution, but the idea was definitely worth salvaging. Lethal Scheme The art isn't nearly as cool, but that's the price you gotta pay for balance, I guess.

I squared this circle by envisioning it not as "attacking the battle" but as "attacking the opposing side's creatures within the battle/contributing their prowess to the battle." But I agree, they're very clunky cards and I'll only run them if they're sweet enough on their own merits (which...

    Card/Deck Low Power Card Spotlight

I run the Prowler and can attest that a surprising number of decks are actively happy to see this show up as their 13th pick. Solid B- level card. It also plays really nicely with equipment and any auras you might run.

Why did 3 mana get all the good cards this time around? This one is a lot of text but it seems pretty reasonable, all things considered. At any rate it forces you to think a lot to get maximum value out of it and it's doing something new for UR within the spellslinger slot, so I'll be jamming...

I'm pumped for these, tbh. The combat step is by far the most interesting part of the game outside of the stack, and these create some neat decisions. I wonder if these are going to be better in midrange decks or if we might get funky creature-based control decks out of them. Is Invasion of New...

Okay, but please make this little dude a Crab Wizard or I will riot and crash cube artisan again.

    General Fight Club

If you do occasionals, I'd recommending mainboarding one and having the other as an occasional. Saheeli seems like the more interactive game piece to me in the sense that you have to actively defend her despite her having a much higher "life total" than the iconoclast (i.e. there are more...

Mordor's Cube (The Ship of Theseus)

Makes sense, thanks for the review! The more I think about Mathas the more he seems a fun bridge between aggro and control. I'll give him a go based on your recommendation!

Mordor's Cube (The Ship of Theseus)

Great write-up! I've been meaning to ask you for a while about Mathas--do you think he'd be good in a somewhat low-powered format, or do you think that his stock really depends on how cheap removal is? As a member of Team Excellent Mana Fixing At All Levels Of Power, I'm not too concerned about...

Sets (LTR) The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle Earth

I'm wondering if this is how they'll insert stories from the Silmarillion. There could be a Song of Beren and Luthien, a Sundering of Numenor, a Stealing the Silmarils--thr more I think about it the more natural it feels, especially with the recurring theme of music in the books.

General Poker and the Prisoner's Dilemma

So, not to game theory nerd too much, but certain situations call for certain strategies. What you're describing is a pure Nash equilibrium, in which a rational player will choose to play a single dominant strategy. However, these situations are special and at the bare minimum rely on perfect...

Sets (MoM) April of the Machines Previews

These cards are very silly, very pushed, very dumb, and very cool. I'm glad they exist and hope that none of them are fun enough that I'm tempted to run them. In other news, does anyone know what the deal is with the Planechase cards from the commander decks? I'm glad they're making more, but...

    The Black Cube

It's gonna be really hard to hold up Decaying Haiku for your own creatures, so you have to rely on the mercy of your opponents. How many decks are creatureless/cheat their consequential creatures into play? The flashback on that is nifty, though, as it creates a minigame based in playing around...

    General CBS

You have a lot of artifact hate; do you need this much? It keeps a lot of things like Smuggler's Copter in check, but it feels a little arbitrary in a format with this many artifacts. I dislike Ashnod on the grounds that she's very wordy in a disconnected way. Gorex, for example, is wordy, but...
