Sets (LCI & REX) Lost Caverns of Ixalan and Jurassic Park spoilers

The other possibility for the 2009 mechanic would be... Traps? He sure did pick a year without a lot of new mechanics, huh...

    Sets (PIP) Fallout Commander Previews

On one hand, I like rad counters, am cautiously intrigued by the fact that we're revisiting Energy, and some of the designs (Nuka-Cola Vending Machine is honestly pretty neat). On the other hand, I don't like Junk mechanically, don't care for Fallout aesthetically (I'm not a fan of post-apoc...

Sets (LCI & REX) Lost Caverns of Ixalan and Jurassic Park spoilers

It's not that the vanilla creatures are special, mind you — they're not special by definition! My thought was closer to the stereotype of Pauper where you have crazy enablers that you use to play absolutely garbage creatures. So you're slamming down moxen and setting up elaborate engines and...

Eh, the real powerhouse cards tend to be brutally simple. ... I think that the nuance that gets lost when people go "wall of text good or bad?" is that not all walls of text are created equal. Sure, Gollum, Scheming Guide has 62 words and Questing Beast has 48, but Gollum only has one ability...

You know for a fact that they'd fuck it up, just like Netflix did. (And probably for the same exact reasons...) Wrong kind of cowboys. :p If you don't have a thing against anime, I highly suggest sitting down and giving the original series a watch. It's a classic for a reason.

Sets (LCI & REX) Lost Caverns of Ixalan and Jurassic Park spoilers

Honestly, the funniest thing that I've gotten out of the NEW BOOSTER thing is that you could probably make a pretty reasonable cube where all of the creatures are just draft-chaff vanilla creatures. Oh, sure, a lot of us have been seduced by the modern approach to creatures (where they have to...

    General New Booster

That's pretty simple, honestly — we tend to use wordiness as a proxy for complexity, even though they're only tangentially related to each-other at best. And we don't like wordiness because it's a bit of a drag during draft. Gollum's honestly a head-scratcher to me, though, because it's a very...

    General Custom Cards: The Lab

Yeah, pretty much. A hot writing tip: if you're writing something that's supposed to sound good (like, say, flavortext), try reading it out loud. You might not consciously remember any grammar, but your brain is absolutely cracked when it comes to parsing languages you're fluent in.

    General Custom Cards: The Lab

So, your flavortext is a bit clunky in English — you just kinda have a pair of clauses that need something to glue them together. Something like: Which still sounds a bit off (I'd personally swap the order of the clauses, but that's just me), but it's not too bad.

Both! I'm kinda neutral on this change myself (I don't buy packs anyway, so eh), but whoever had the bright idea to slam this announcement into the emergency B&R slot certainly made a decision. :p

Huh. It takes skill to torpedo your optics so hard.

Having a pile of cards kinda changes the calculus, though. Part of the idea behind "emblem cubes" is that you're going "OK, you can all reliably build around [card] - how do you evaluate cards in light of that?". Ideally, you're making it so drafters have to reassess their rules-of-thumb and...

    General CBS

Here I am again, with another dumb gimmick cube idea (that I'm probably never going to build!) :btg: Behold, a forgotten draft-chaff rare: Demonic Rising Everyone gets the appropriate emblem... but the puzzle is that most of the creature cards in the cube are stuff like Resolute...

    General (WHO) Dr. Who Spoilers

Yeah, that's another thing that feels weird about this whole thing - even I, a person who has very little actual knowledge of Doctor Who, know that the Doctor solves problems through cleverness. None of the Doctor cards should have attack triggers!

    General (WHO) Dr. Who Spoilers

It's actually three triggers... which isn't that much more reasonable?

    General (WHO) Dr. Who Spoilers

Only if they're on a permanent (it only prevents you from exiling or sacrificing them to triggered abilities, after all). Also, the wording they used makes me think that Fleshbag Marauder effects would make you pick a non-token creature to sacrifice if possible.

    General (WHO) Dr. Who Spoilers

But don't you get it? Once you ramp out an overcosted six-drop and wait a turn to attack with it, you triple your number of overcosted six-drops every turn! That's value, that is!

    General (WHO) Dr. Who Spoilers

I also suspect that part of the problem is that Doctor Who is really huge and scattered in comparison to WH40k or LotR - they need to somehow fit references to, what, 42 years worth of a TV series, including spinoffs and movies, into a single set of cards? Especially since, you know, they need...
