Erik's "The cool side of Magic" cube

Thanks for the suggestions Nanonox! I don't know what to make of it but I'll give it a try. I'll also keep my eyes open for cheaper cards. So, after Red I think the best colour to work on is Black. Black was one of the strongest and most focused colours when I first started the cube but, as I...

So, I'm looking for some sort of Drain Effects or cards that could support a WB Control deck with a "pay life" theme. Drain Life

Skarrgan Hellkite Thundermaw Hellkite Which one do you think is more generally useful both as a curve topper, a big red creature and in a Wildfire deck?

Erik's "The cool side of Magic" cube

I just want to say that I'm now very happy with the red section of my cube. The only change I want to do is to remove Guttersnipe, Dire Fleet Daredevil or other creature for one non-burn, versatile red spell. Despite my previous comments on Madness, I've actually added two cards with the...

    General Mass Removal/Sweepers

Some random thoughts from someone who still hasn't revised their mass removal. 1) Avoiding T3 Wraths is absolutely necessary. Quite simply, I don't think playing a creature-heavy strategy is a good idea when you can get your board wiped. 2) Density is as important as power. That is, a deck...

What I mean is that there's fixing, but it's not the kind of fixing a more aggressive deck benefits from. If I want to play, say, a green guy on turn one and a blue guy on turn two the only bicolor lands that allow me to do that are the checklands cycle. The other cycles (Scry, gain 1 life...

Personally, that list is a good example of why I would make those cuts (or support the archetype more). It's not awful, but you are have sacrificed quite a few picks on the draft to run cards in a fairly unoptimal manner. In other words, I don't think Steel Overseer is going to do much as...

That's a sweet deck though one should note it doesn't do anything for neither Cranial Plating nor Toolcraft Exemplar. You also got a very high number of key cards, more than I think are normal. But if this kind of deck can be easily built then yeah, Welder is fine.

Recycle Beast Whisperer I've always wanted to play a Recycle deck but it's true that it has a few too many safety valves to be great. Cube, however, has a lower power level and more clear synergies like Crucible of Worlds. Beast Whisperer is expensive and won't produce the same dramatic effect...

Reevaluate is nice, but I think it's going to be more of a Squee, Goblin Nabob than a Mystic Speculation!

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

I want to know. How powerful are the Diamonds compared to Signets? I know that coming into play tapped is not a huge downgrade vis a vis wrath effects and other big plays but not fixing your mana is. Fire Diamond I'm afraid the Ramos cycle is terrible, right? Tooth of Ramos

Don't be afraid to make suggestions, just having someone's opinion on the cube is more appreciated. Either way, Cranial PlatingToolcraft Exemplar Like japahn, you don't run enough artifacts to make Cranial Plating playable. You run 34, which is very low, but it's even less in practice...

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

In my very short experience with the card it's played on the lower range of the scale far more than the higher. The reason is that playing it for 1W is the same as playing it for 2W one turn later. So you just tend to play him whenever you have the time for it.

Erik's "The cool side of Magic" cube

Wow, that's a nice post, thank you! You are right that Red's "midrange" must be about keeping the pressure. Putting it that way does remind me of a some cards or strategies that worked a bit like that. Of the cards you mention, the one I like the most is Quicksmith Rebel. I think this kind of...

Chances are it doesn't hold up, but the MTGO Pro Tour Cube is very much like I wanted my cube to be when I first started looking into the format. I wonder what kind of inspiration to take from it.

It seems to me that Artifacts as a theme needs smaller, more generally useful cards, with 4 mana permanents being a "luxury" of sorts. That is, these cards won't help Artifacts be more viable, they'll just be a good pick if you are already into that deck. Of the two, I like The Antiquities War...

I must admit the idea of a "staple cube" was abandoned long ago haha. My initial idea of a cube representing old extended was just plain worse than a more typical build mixing old spells and modern creatures.

Erik's "The cool side of Magic" cube

I decided to take a different approach. I took a piece of paper and started to write down, from memory, all cards in Red by converted mana cost. The goal was to include only the cards I'm actually interested in. After all, a card I can't remember or I wasn't overly happy would only come on the...

I'm going to say that I've been dissapointed by Restoration Gearsmith. Restoration Gearsmith Here's the issue: This is a solid card but also one that I would not pick over a removal spell, a hatebear like Sin Collector or even a blink spell. Part of the reason is that the 4cc slot is very...
