Commander Cube

The Commander Cube is a format for 3 players

Win condition: Collect more cards in Hall of Fame than your opponents to win the tournament!

Before the tournament begins, each player gains
- 10 Random spells of each mono color
- 3 Random colorless spells
- 3 Random nonbasic lands
- 3 Random Commanders

All games are 1 vs. 1 games with 40 cards decks + 1 Commander.
Players begin the games with 8 cards in hand and put 1 on the bottom of their library.
Whenever a card is banned, it is moved into Hall of Fame as a victory point.
At the end of the tournament, the winner will be the player with the most cards in Hall of Fame.

After each game
- The winner keeps their seat and will play against the next opponent. The winner will keep their Commander until they lose a game. When they lose a game, any Commander that won a game previously is banned and moved into Hall of Face as a victory point. When the Commander is banned, the player gains a new random Commander.

- The loser chooses to ban a card from the winner's deck. The banned card is moved into Hall of Fame as a victory point. The winner gains a new random card of the same type (There are two types: Spells and nonbasic lands) to their sideboard. They also gain a temporary Blasted Landscape to replace the banned card in the 40 card deck until the player loses a game. This is done to not have a player with 39 or 38 cards in their deck.

- The loser creates two face up piles. To each pile they add 1 random Commander, 6 random spells and 2 random nonbasic lands. The player drafts one of the piles of 9 cards. The loser reconstructs their deck and gets ready for the next game.

Some thoughts

The fun part: All three players have something to do at all times even though we are an odd number of players. There are always an two players playing a game and the last person is powering up their card pool and reconstructing their deck to face up against the winner of the current round. If you like deck building, you will like this format.

About balancing: Whenever a player wins a game, they will lose their best card because the loser will ban the best card. This creates a somewhat fair environment. The same goes for Commanders and due to the fact that we keep the Commander color identity rule, the players are also forced to switch colors of their decks every now and then which I expect to feel pretty cool.

About victory points: Every card in Hall of Fame counts as a victory point. Whenever you win a game, you will have a card banned and moved into Hall of Fame which puts you one step closer to victory. The same goes for Commanders except you don't lose your Commander while you are on a winning streak. You only lose it after your winning streak breaks. This is done to prevent 'downtime' where players have to wait for a player to construct their deck. Winner keeps their seat so they keep their Commander until they lose a game. This should create a format where a player that gets ahead doesn't reap insane rewards when it comes to victory points in Hall of Fame. Example: If you win three games spread out throughout the tournament you get 3x2 cards into Hall of Fame = 6 victory points. If you win three games in a row you get 3x1 + 1 cards into Hall of Fame = 4 victory points.
