Infect plays terribly in a cube. If you hit the opponent with some creatures that have infect, and others that don't, some of those hits were a waste of time.
For cube: what if infect also did normal damage to the opponent? You still need 10 counters to win that way, so no change there, but if you don't have many infect creatures, at least they are helping a little bit with real damage like a Wither creature does.
I've been drafting some Scars of Mirrodin and ticking up those poison counters just provides such great game tension. Both players care very much about what the Infect creature(s) on the board are doing. Is it doomed to only ever be experienced in a block that builds around the mechanic, or can it be made to work?
