General What did you buy for your cube today?

I dunno, I don't spend a looot of cash on cards, but when I do, I feel happy. Maybe it makes you happy too. Want to talk about it?

This is a big order from CFB that's mostly replacing proxies with real cards, with a few cards in here that are benched for being too good, so if things change (I dunno, I could go powered occasionally) I would like access to a real one
  • Overgrown Tomb, Sacred Foundry, Watery Grave, Stomping Ground, Steam Vents
    • Bought the 5 RTR block pictures of the shocklands I was missing; In general I prefer the old pictures, but given I had 5 over the course of the limited season, I completed it.
  • Venser, the Sojourner + Emblem
    • I think I told my playgroup that as soon as blink venser isn't good enough for my main cube, I'm de-powering it; also I like emblems
  • Koth of the Hammer + Emblem
    • I think this card has a lifetime pass in most cubes, so here it is
  • Batterskull
    • this card is benched, but I doubt it's getting reprinted and it's not getting reprinted for years probably
  • Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite
    • I could see a day where my cube doesn't have this card, but that seems like a ways off
  • Shrine of Burning Rage
    • inexpensive and really good, get in here
  • Shrine of Loyal Legions
    • over-performs all the time, and it's 25 cents, so sure
  • Bone Shredder
    • Classic, cheap, and one of the few cards with echo that I feel safe saying will stay in lists for awhile
  • Phantasmal Image
    • Dipped low with M14 rules changes and merfolk not being super played
  • Phyrexian Metamorph, Wurmcoil Engine
    • currently benched for being too generically playable and good, but not getting any cheaper
  • Avalanche Riders
    • for the first 10 years of my magic career this was my favorite creature, although it's not actually in my list most of the time
  • Green Sun's Zenith
    • it's getting the FTV reprint, but it's still not getting cheaper. I could see this one day being unbanned in Modern or it getting more legacy play
  • Primeval Titan
    • Not always in my list, but it's not decreasing in price anytime soon, maybe it's unbanned in commander some day
  • Sword of War and Peace
    • One of the two swords in my list right now, and it's the cheapest, so went for it.
  • Mortarpod
    • I may double up, and it's a dime, so why not
  • Cloudthresher
    • So this is an 80 cent speculative pick up: I'm running 4x birthing pod in green and I need another 6-drop to help the chain; my players have been complaining about green's game about flyers
Also, I want one of those sweet Elesh V tokens
what about you guys?

I can't say I bought anything today, but last week I did some shopping. Its sad, but I've gotten to the point that its easier to just buy a common that I know I already have then to try to find it. In my defense, though, my mtg collection doesn't live in my house. Then again the person's house it does live at is less then 10 minutes away, so. . .

Anyway, I got:

Hunting Moa
Talrand, Sky Summoner
Stinkweed Imp
Gutshot
Nest Invader
Tangle
Venser, the Sojourner + Emblem
  • I think I told my playgroup that as soon as blink venser isn't good enough for my main cube, I'm de-powering it; also I like emblems
  • I totally agree. Once you can't play your favorite cards, you've gone too far.

Great topic! I just put in an order from CFB myself. Can you believe they were out of Firefist Striker...? Grrrr, of all the cards not to have in stock...
Also, you can order emblems from CFB?! That totally blew my mind.

Lotleth Troll isn't a turd ok yeah it's kind of a turd.

mmmmmmm salvage and raptor. salvage is a big hit, i'm still waiting to see if the raptor is good (probably isn't but who knows)

here are my new potential design failures:

Lotus Cobra (15/405 fetches might not be enough, though they want targets with 10 shocks and 20 duals, i dunno maybe this should be 20)
Avenger of Zendikar (big and dumb and quite unbeatable)
Chrome Mox (awful card compared to mox diamond, maybe still OK)
Spell Snare (are there really enough 2's?)

recently past definite design failure:

Decree of Pain

I've been feeling bad about Lotleth Troll for a while, but last night I randomly slotted it into my cube because a card was missing (apparently my bookkeeping from trying to run two cubes and a modern deck isn't that great).

Lotus Cobra is really good even without fetches IMO. Obviously better with them.

You're making me nostalgic Rob, slotting in cards like Shrine of Burning Rage that aren't in my cube anymore. That one was fun, well designed and added a lot of tension to the place. It also gets around

Here's my latest CFB order. Most of these aren't really cube related though, but if I didn't post them I wouldn't be able to share at all. :
- 4x Geist of Saint Traft, Innistrad
- 2x Arid Mesa, Zendikar
- 1x Deathrite Shaman, Return to Ravnica
- 3x Kird Ape, 3rd Edition/Revised
- 1x Qasali Pridemage, Alara Reborn
- 3x Lightning Helix, Ravnica
- 2x Tribal Flames, Invasion
- 3x Path to Exile, Conflux
- 1x Armed // Dangerous, Dragon's Maze
- 1x Overwhelming Stampede, Magic 2011
- 1x Dauntless Escort, Alara Reborn
- 3x Ghost Quarter, Dissension
- 1x Primeval Titan, Magic 2011
- 1x Young Pyromancer, Magic 2014
- 1x Ogre Battledriver, Magic 2014
- 2x Lingering Souls, Dark Ascension
- 1x Wear // Tear, Dragon's Maze
- 1x Ancient Grudge, Time Spiral
- 3x Stony Silence, Innistrad

My plans exactly.

Chris, I.. I wish I could tell you, but I still don't really know how the dredge archetype works in cube. *runs away in shame*

Dakmor salvage acts as a backup loam for worm harvest in a dredge deck, while dredging to hit the loam or other cards in the dredge package.
It's also pretty sweet in some sort of smallpox/gravecrawler set up, since you can sac it or discard it to smallpox and then hit your land drop and dredge for crawlers.

Calvin to the rescue! This, ladies and gentlemen, is why I run just about every single cube change by Calvin first. No joke.

Yo Calvin, nobody ever wants to cast Craterhoof Behemoth , find me a cooler card at a lower CMC.

disagree STRONGLY. Although I was looking at Kamahl recently

Somewhat on the original topic (pleasantly surprised at the number of responses), at what threshold will you personally buy a speculative card as part of a larger order vs proxying?

Experience has told me my number is 2 dollars for something that's played at least a little in other formats, and $1 otherwise.

I am willing to pay $5 for a speculative card. However, have a friend who also cubes and makes casual decks all the time, so I can rest assured that any card I end up not using will probably not go to waste.

Communal card pools are OP.

as i've been more social in paper magic lately what i've realized is that the main advantage of a playgroup isnt so much extra testing (though it's nice to hear about what other people are doing on modo too) but sharing cards.

simply put, every playgroup needs a sugar daddy.

the cube is my contribution to this all

i bought:

Spellskite
batterskull
Tezzeret agent of Bolas
garruck Xbox promo
2x Goblin guide
3x Bloodghast
2x Foil Master of etherium
Foil student of warfare
razorverge thicket
Darkslick shores
Foil MMA Arcbound ravager.

atm all of them will be cubed, but we'll see ^^

Rob Dennis

I don't think I have the guts to double up on goblin guide as my players would either stone (rain) me or it would entice others to jump in to "cube fun police" (r/w/boros) role I often trip into

CML

since when was goblin guide not fun! anyone who says aggro requires no skill or calculation should watch hetrick muddle his way through

It's not that I'm unwilling to double on Goblin Guide, but I don't find it very necessary. Also, depending on the pace of your attacking deck, you might not even want it. Goblin Guide anchors your balls-to-the-wall attacking decks, so I guess it depends on how much help you need in that department. I'd probably chuck in another Bonesplitter first before a second Guide.

I was just contemplating this exact decision when adding in a forty-card booster pack to my cube for tonight's upcoming ten man. I went with a second Rakdos Cackler instead, because Goblin Guide is pretty darned powerful.

I'll see. i'm feeling pretty confident. the set of the themes in my cube should hate aggro by default, so i don't think i can push aggro too hard, ever.
