General Maynard's Draft Fundamentals

Coming from some of the discussion in the metagame balance thread on raw power vs synergy, I find this article an interesting exploration of how Wizards' Limited environments are evolving.

To summarise the article, it points out that understanding modern synergistic Limited formats matters much more than accurately rating raw power level - so you need some kind of selection of plans going in in order to succeed. (To get back to cube, the more synergistic your cube is, the harder it is for the new player to draft it well, even if they're generally good at Magic). However, it makes it clear that even players comfortable with the synergy look to draft raw power early in order to stay open.

Also:
The last few sets have been incredibly well designed so that the rares wouldn't be brainless first picks (aside from Fate Reforged), mostly because they cost infinite, and we have relatively aggressive and tempo-based formats.
This matches some of the recent thoughts on lowering cube curves quite well.

As an aside, I guess the concerns over cards like Grave Titan, Batterskull, etc really come down to the old "bomb rare" problem in formats - cards with so much raw power that it rarely makes sense not to find a way to play them.
