Sets (WOE) Wilds of Eldraine Spoilers

Onderzeeboot

Ecstatic Orb
It's been a while, but I got to play the prerelease again for a change! And I totally aced it! :D 5-0 in matches, 10-0 in games o_O I don't think that ever happened before! I built a Rakdos aggro deck with a light white splash for two adventures. It's kind of incredible how much reach my deck turned out to have during the day to go over the top, even after my opponents drew up their defenses. Very fun deck to play, very cool set, loved the decks my opponents got to play as well!

Observations:
  • Eriette's Tempting Apple is a very cool card, and won me quite a few games. Turns out stealing their best attacker/blocker and then getting to deal 3 to the dome afterwards is definitely worth 6 mana in installments. I think I will have to test this one out, very satisfying! One game I also had a Callous Sell-Sword in hand, and that was not a fair game, let me tell you :)
  • Bargain is kind of confusing. I kept wanting to sacrifice creatures, because that's the natural thing to sacrifice, but obviously you can't. Mechanic feels a bit off, and even though Candy Grapple has been fantastic (both in function and in form, look at that flavor text! <3), I feel that I don't want to add this to my cube.
  • Roles, on the other hand, were less confusing than I had expected. I don't want to include all six, but I could be persuaded to add a few. Lord Skitter's Blessing and Charming Scoundrel both played very well for me, and I saw Not Dead After All and The Witch's Vanity do good things for my opponents. Witch's Mark is also a super exciting Tormenting Voice variant!
  • Rats are an awesome archetype! Both Harried Spearguard and Totentanz, Swarm Piper were solid, but the real mvp was Song of Totentanz. That card won me a lot of games by pumping out a spread of small hasty critters (especially with Raid Bombardment in play).
  • Celebration is an incredibly fun mechanic that really rewards sequencing your cards right. Love love love it, am going to try and get it in the cube for sure! I said I was interested in testing Goddric, Cloaked Reveler and Raging Battle Mouse, but today I got to play with Grand Ball Guest, Belligerent of the Ball, and Bespoke Battlegard, and all of them were somewhere between really solid and incredibly good! One of my opponents vouched for Armory Mice, and while Tuinvale Guide realistically is one mana too expensive, it almost kept my opponent in the race in one of the games.

I also went to my first prerelease event since Shadows over Innistrad, although this one was draft.

Pack one I stayed open, drafting elements of {B/G} food, {G/W} auras and a Threadbind Clique. I got somewhat rewarded pack two with the Goosemother. When my deck went off with stuff like Up the Beanstalk and Troyan it felt really unfair – but it didn't work consistently and I went 1-2 in the end. If I would've won the very close game three in my second match, I would've won three set boosters, but I didn't and thous didn't got anything besides a new spin down.

For my girlfriend it went even worse. She drafted a {U/B} Faeries deck, won her girst game in the first match and then nothing for the rest of the evening. I couldn't take a closer look at her deck yet, but it sounded like she was missing removal (we were at different tables and will battle it out tonight).

However, it was still a success. My gf loved the flavor and the socialising with new people, I rarely heard her talk so enthusiastic about mtg :) (she honestly enjoy the game, but she's not a crazy cardboard crack junkie like me)

At the same time, I recruited about a dozen people interested in drafting my cubes, got added into some new whatsapp groups and will hopefully cube even more and with more different people soon. MtG isn't MtG without the gathering after all!
