Yeah, kinda same. Most of my friends don't really enjoy cube, and if I can't play the best part about Magic then why play at all? I'll still probably pop in every now and again, but eh, time to write that TTRPG I guess.

I honestly think I'm done with Magic. I was starting to get back into things because one of my coworkers is getting into playing and I thought it might be fun to play in paper again for a change... but I just can't justify my emotional investment in Magic to myself anymore. It's been a good run (off-and-on interest since Lorwyn block and continuous interest from Kalidesh), but I think it's time for me to move on.
I'm letting it play out. I was excited for Foundations because they're kinda classic designs, but having it come with and increase in UB garbage is a real bummer.

I thought it was already known that the Marvel sets were going into Standard.
Entering through standard is extremely good. The marginal number of people it upsets is close to zero, because so few people play standard.
Except, you know, the millions of players on Magic arena.
Win for everyone else, too, because it means fewer new UB cards are going to be designed purpose-made for eternal formats.
Unless you prefer the power level of standard sets, setting aside that this probably means more UB sets overall, and doesn't even necessarily mean there will be fewer of them to begin with considering several of them are made for commander.
Not necessarily a hater, but it really is a sign of the times that we're so extremely deep in "thing you know" being a requirement for so much games and media being made
Which isn't really limited to UB, most magic sets these days is limited to "Pop culture references you know" and "Legendary creatures you know". At this point I don't really particularly care about UB coming to standard, if the alternative is Lazav with a setting appropriate costume then it might as well be Cloud and Sephiroth instead, whatever, I can retheme either.

fwiw I do think they said they might have gone a little far on this one with OTJ - like they acknowledge that it was very "EVERYONE IS HERE"

though I can't find the thing where MaRo said so on his tumblr

Do you think both of them will quit magic forever?
Like Mown said, it's a super popular format on Arena. Lots of people create content for Standard online as well. I don't think this is the end for me. It only changes the looks, and I don't really care about the looks. The actual gameplay is still super sweet, so I'll keep enjoying that, regardless of whether I have to attack with a made up in-universe character or SpongeBob SquarePants.

I don't think this kills magic for me since I think my investment in cube will stay exactly as its been, but the stakes here are basically "how much fun is it to keep up with new magic releases and the game as a whole instead of just doing my thing" and we are rapidly approaching "not fun at all and not worth it".

(completely unrelated question: do the [ card] tags take set parameters somehow? I'd love to see actual Goblin Guide and not that new art)

No one answered so I’ll step in.

No you cannot do that.

Before you could do it with ci but this you also cannot do anymore.

Oh, I didn't know that, it's sad

So the best thing is to link the Scryfall image? :D

Did anyone end up trying this? It seems like such a sweet card, and Red Card is a pretty decent card in hearthstone if that is any indication, but my gut feeling is that it's kind of underwhelming.
I'm going to try it out anyway, just curious if anyone is cubing it.

Except, you know, the millions of players on Magic arena.
After playing Arena continuously since Adventures in Forgotten Realms, I've finally stopping caring about keeping up with the daily quests. Arena suffers from relentlessly Spiky play due to the daily wins incentives, and I've grown tired if it. The last time I felt jazzed about getting new standard cards was BRO.

I did, but it was extremely underwhelming.

First, as blink, it's simply not good enough to wait 2 turns to get any value. You are already spending a card, you open yourself to removal and you need enough good creatures in your deck and in play to actually target.

As removal. you usually play it on your turn so it only takes the opponent 1 turn before they get their creature back with its ETB effect and haste. Positively awful.

I tried to queue up to grab the Secret Lair with Storm for my Cube today. No such luck.

Not really interested in spending $70 on the secondary market for a marginal card in my list, even if she's the most compelling RUG card yet for a singleton draft format IMO. I could proxy her, but then I'd just make it in-universe and then I'd be opening up my own floodgates in a way I'm not ready yet for that...though my Gingerbehemoth and Force of Rowan certainly are.

I'm not even mad at not getting her, because it made me feel dumb in the first place. Why am I spending $40 on 5 cards when I recently spent $40 on a whole deck of Doctor Who cards or Fallout cards?

I had the site open for a hot minute and was like, nah man, what am I doing with my money and what is this FOMO?! Quickly closed the site again :D

The CubeCobra playtest data is pretty accurate for me....but that's probably because of how regularly I draft my Cube online when I have a free minute (and a huge thanks to my favorite MtG Pro Dom Harvey for occasionally showing me how to actually draft my Cube!).

I have three observations from looking at the Cube-specific ELO this morning as I procrastinate:

1. Kozilek, Butcher of Truth is no longer interesting

Dead last on an ELO basis. With only 8 picks and 2 occasions where I thought to mainboard it, it's pretty impressive I haven't cut Kozilek yet. Maybe I just like the idea of having the three titans represented in some form or fashion, but with great top-end for the green ramp decks like Vaultborn Tyrant and Old One Eye for a fraction of the cost, why bother going up to 10 mana? It's a little sad to lose a founding member of my Cube like this, but I took out Ulamog recently and haven't missed it once. I think Emrakul, the Promised End is going to have to suffice as my last representation of the trio of Eldrazi titans.

2. I like Trumpeting Carnosaur and Doric, Nature's Warden far too much

With a pick rate of 25.2% and a mainboard rate of 96.1%, Trumpeting Carnosaur is...simply not that good! I have a huge bias towards red, graveyard strategies, and midrange with good top-end, but even so, the Carnosaur is great but not at the same level as Gut, True Soul Zealot or Inti, Seneschal of the Sun. I think this is a good indication that I need to chill on dinos in my test drafts.

Doric's ELO is a little lower, but not by much. She has an even higher pick rate of 30.8%, which is pretty absurd in a list like mine considering she's a glorified Hill Giant the turn you cast her. Still, I think she's incredibly cool and seriously under-Cubed in other peoples' lists, which makes sense considering the whole UB/double-faced/expensive bits, but for someone like me, those aren't key considerations.

3. The 1-mana land-cyclers like Troll of Khazad-dûm are incredible

I run the whole cycle except for Generous Ent, who I think I really do need to play at this point. These cards are basically tapped dual or tri lands with upside, filling your graveyard in the process with respectable threats for reanimation or other graveyard shenanigans.

BONUS: My Most-Drafted Cards:

Pyrogoyf - 197
Raucous Theater - 189
Harvester of Misery - 188
Bristly Bill, Spine Sower - 180
Escape Tunnel - 178
Shoot the Sheriff - 178
Underground Mortuary - 164
Vaultborn Tyrant - 161
Ocelot Pride - 157
Ajani, Nacatl Pariah - 157
Chaos Defiler - 153

All but one of these cards were printed this year, which is indicative not of power level (I think) but rather of how CubeCobra bots take a long time to adjust to new cards. I still regularly see Ocelot Pride and Ajani, Nacatl Pariah in the last two cards of a pack, and I'm ashamed to admit that I frequently let the newest cards wheel even if they shouldn't IRL just because the CubeCobra engine takes so long to "figure out" that they're good. I would hope that the Cube ELO would help adjust for this but I guess not!

That said, you can still see my Jund-y bias at work here. It's kind of sad to think of how biased this list is to new cards if only because I love Cube as a window into the history of Magic, but apparently I'm just as susceptible to the new hotness as the modern format is!

I hadn't realised that art cards count as dual faced.

Nor had I realised how many universes beyond cards there are.

Also, the art for is really funny: it looks like the assassin is trying to murder a giant knight.
