Geist is far more obnoxious than Thrun IMO. Thrun is just a big dumb beater, which is often fine for what you want it to be, whereas Geist becomes GRBS very quickly.

There was almost certainly an Urborg in play. I love the card but whenever it's play the cheating accusations come thick and fast because people are more interested in ~scandal~ than paying attention to the match.

I'm running Commune with the Gods, but in my Cube I have a lot of enchantments and the graveyard clause matters a lot. I do wonder if the Commune(s) and their relatives (e.g. Ancient Stirrings if you support an artifact theme or Eldrazi) are a good way to give green some much-needed card selection.
