Resolute Reinforcements Aether Channeler Haughty Djinn Cult Conscript The Raven Man The Elder Dragon War Phoenix Chick Squee, Dubious Monarch King Darien XLVIII Resolute Reinforcements is an interesting alternative to Raise the Alarm for token/go-wide decks that exchanges spells matter for...

    Sets [DMU] Dominaria United Spoilers

This is an intriguing design. Chapter 1 is almost a “sideboard” card: excellent against certain decks but irrelevant against others. I would love to see other read ahead sagas with similarly niche chapter 1, for example destroy target enchantment or artifact. It also reminds me of modal cards...

And while I know it isn’t strictly better than Callous Bloodmage, it sure feels like it.

    Sets [DMU] Dominaria United Spoilers

The first 47 King Dariens (Kings Darien?) weren’t worthy of a card, and the Phyrexian invasion is putting the bloodline in jeopardy. I’m considering the card as a go- wide, counters and tokens signpost: he hits all my three colour archetypes containing {W}{G}.

I’m guessing your MtG fanfic is for mature audiences only.

    Card/Deck Low Power Card Spotlight

Fair enough. If you limit the design scope to Conspiracy then I can’t see any complaints. Cube is the only other format where it is playable, and I think it’s too format warping, having played it in both powered cube and mid-powered cube.

General What is your stickiest glue card?

The term “glue card” has been used to describe those cards in a cube that can work across multiple supported archetypes. I’m interested to learn what card in your cube is the most adhesive, gumming together the widest assortment of strategies into one sticky blob. For me it is Angel of...

    Card/Deck Low Power Card Spotlight

Would you care to explain why? safra’s argument seems to be that Arcane Savant piles degeneracy on degeneracy, which is an issue for any card designed for eternal formats. We can’t know the designer’s intent for sure, but outside CN2 drafts, Cube is the only format I can think of where Arcane...

    Card/Deck Low Power Card Spotlight

Griselbrand’s potency is because he is both Baneslayer and Mulldrifter: his draw 7 can be used immediately but if he stays on the battlefield he’s also a massive flying lifelinker. Chimera would gain every part of this value. But you would still only have a 1/3 chance of turning Chimera into...

General Is my signature too lengthy?

I’m not bothered by the length, but I think your signature should be about you, not a list of upcoming sets. If you had 11 lines of links to your cubes, your blog, your Twitter, etc I’d be okay with that. If I wanted to know the next 11 sets I’d go to a WotC marketing page.

    Card/Deck Low Power Card Spotlight

Volatile Chimera does not grant the ETB effects of the creature it becomes. Most of the larger creatures in my cube have some ETB ability, making it hard to abuse the Chimera. Arcane Savant, on the other hand, was often horribly broken.

Battalion Phoenix caught my eye as it fits into the go-wide strategy I support in Naya. Also some interaction with graveyard and +1/+1 counters.

    General Defining & Optimizing Complexity

It Good to find another Inis fan here. Possibly my favourite board game, let down only by the fact that it seems to be ludological marmite(1) in my game group. As well as the drafting each round that might be popular with magic players, it creates a rich multiplayer experience that Commander...

Stun counters differ from Frost Lynx effects by preventing any other untap effects, not just at the start of turn. I could see stun being used in green and possibly red to thematically represent a knockout punch or similar.

I hope it is charge counters. Roughly a quarter of cards using or affecting charge counters were in original Mirrodin block, and with cards like Ion Storm and Power Conduit it felt as if we were on the cusp of a build-around mechanic that never quite materialised. I have an irrational dislike...

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

I run Wonder. Maybe it reduces interaction but you can still block with flying/reach creatures, still use targeted/mass removal, and there are a handful of cards to interact with the graveyard. On the other hand, over a third of my blue creatures already have flying, so there Is some work to be...

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

It’s a cheap enabler that allows you to discard for free. I still run it to support Jund madness archetypes, and it can do some work in graveyard based decks. It is certainly showing its age, but there is nothing else I can think of that does the same job on turn one. Oona’s Prowler is ‘better’...

General Monthly Fun Q: What's your favorite thing or topic on Riptidelab?

My favourite thing is the monthly fun Q. My second favourite thing is the breadth of perspective, which helps me to think about cards/cubes/archetypes in ways I would not otherwise have considered.
