Site News How To: Riptide Drafts

Got it to work. Thanks, anotak! Is that the most recent cardlist? It's a smaller file than another one I downloaded somewhere.

Site News How To: Riptide Drafts

Anybody using Cockatrice on Mac? I can't seem to import cards correctly. None of the online tutorials address my issue (only 1 card being imported???) and the Woogerworks manual only describes the process for PC.

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

I'm partial to Pyromaster myself. Firebrand is too splashable, and contributes to the uninteresting "Planeswalker decks" that show up in cube. Nalaar is fine, but doesn't really open up any interesting deck design space. Ablaze isn't efficient enough to be playable in most decks.

    General Common/Uncommon Playsets

Yes, my initial draft used ZEN-WWK-ROE-M11-SOM-MBS-NPH. Ajani's Pridemate (from M11) factored heavily into the Orzhov life gain theme.

    General Common/Uncommon Playsets

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. It's very helpful. My reasoning was: WotC consciously builds cross-block synergy into its sets now, so there would be a fair amount of complementary mechanics. It would "freeze" the cube in time, so I could focus on getting it where I wanted it, without the...

Site News Draft February 23rd (Sunday)

Yes, sorry for not being clear. I'm in for Sunday's draft.

    General Common/Uncommon Playsets

My main problem with Modern Masters was that the archetypes felt too forced. There weren't a lot of cards that overlapped between them. ISD is a personal favorite, but I'd prefer to move away from preexisting draft environments. One of my initial ideas used ZEN-NPH and seeded the following...

    General Common/Uncommon Playsets

So, I'm keeping my cube construction budget low for now (over the last couple years, I sold off my pimped out Modern cube), and I have stockpiled a bunch of Common/Uncommon playsets that I'd like to use to make multiple cubes. What are some ideas for how to maximize my use of these playsets...

    The Music Thread

If anybody here is into the misnomer that is classical music, John Mackey is doing some cool things.

I'm down for both the Sunday morning draft, and more frequent ones in general.

General [Format Discussion] Modern Masters is Totally Incredible

What I liked about the format: Skill-testing games with complex board states Mana ramp is confined to green Interactive environment Actual archetypes (rather than just a collection of good cards) What I disliked about the format: Too many parasitic mechanics Drafting felt confining; once in...

Article An Off-Color Joke: Fixing, DGR, Cube, and You

Nice article! I shared it with my cube group. I wish you would go into a little more detail about why you think Zac Hill's (and, more generally, WoTC's) stance on "good stuff" environments is wrong. His point was that the better the mana fixing, the more context-independent your picks become...

General M14 RULES CHANGES ARE KILLING MAGIC, I'M GONNA QUIT

Turn / Burn can take out Darksteel Sentinel now. But, I guess that only matters to us peasant cubers. :)

    Required Reading

I have always found Sirlin to be a bit of a blowhard. Yes, he has a lot of valuable experience in balancing competitive 2-player games, but he makes grand pronouncements about things in which he has way too little experience, too. When he gets called out in his forums, Sirlin tends to dismiss...

    Required Reading

He doesn't update anymore, but Jonathan Degann's Journal of Boardgame Design is one of the most insightful looks at boardgame design that I've found. In particular, check out his Game Theory 101 articles, linked in the sidebar. They set a framework for discussion of great game design.

    Article Rethinking Red

I like promoting blink effects and tokens with white, and have found Stormfront Riders to be an interesting card that promotes both.

    Other Games

@tomchaps: Yes! As I recall, you were moving to Philly soon and we got you for the morning cube action. Glad to see you're still active in cubing. @CML: Do you know what type of learner you are, in the teaching pedagogy sense? Visual? Auditory? Kinesthetic? I've found that one person's best...

    General Hollywood Squares

Well, I haven't had a chance to try it out yet, but I had originally imagined it as a variant on an FLGS league format. So, just draft a number of packs. Since writing that, however, I have become an avid cuber, and imagine that beginning with a subset of the cube and adding more cards each...

Card/Deck Mana rocks / Colourless mana fixing

We've experimented with using EDH mulligan rules in cube matches. I like the consistency it offers in starting hands, so you curve out a little better.

    General Hollywood Squares

I came up with a rough idea for a "fantasy football league" version of M:TG that I still haven't had a chance to try out. Rather than post a wall of text, here's a link to the rules. For your version, here's an idea to speed up drafting. Instead of giving everyone 100 points from the...
