General Cutting cards people don't play

This right here hits on one of my cube's foundational design principles, and one of the reasons I get nervous about adding in strong archetypes. If I can design a cube with emergent strategies - strategies that I don't even plan for - I feel like I am succeeding. If someone pulls together a...

General Do finishers have to be so boring?

Finishers also need to be scaled to speed and power level of the cube. For instance, any of the titans would warp my cube terribly. I'm liking the Souls right now when I need a high-end 6 drop. T-maw was just slightly too fast and strong. Taking him out has actually been one of the better...

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

I ran this for quite awhile, and just switched it out for Life//Death. Soul Exchange was ok, but never particularly great. Life//Death is definitely more interesting.

    General Fight Club

This site is my new preferred proxy generator: http://www.andyrut.com/proxies/ You can set the size of the card that is generated and pick your preferred art. I have also discovered that using a good PDF printer is critical. CutePDF seems to do a pretty good job with printing mtg proxies...

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

I was thinking earlier today how having colored-artifact equipment would be really useful for cube. I feel like there is a gap between high-powered equipment that is too obviously a 1st pick, due to be being colorless, and weak equipment that is just not quite good enough. On the flip side...

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

I actually have run this in my cube from day 1. It's a neat twist on bad removal and good aggro damage, and has been solid and fun pretty consistently. My cube's power level is only medium-high though, for what it's worth. I will make this card work. It was a favorite of mine back in my...

General What build arounds do you run?

I agree to a certain extent, as long as the misleading signal cards are exceptions and not the rule. Being able to signal archetypes via build-around-me cards seems like a really fun way to draft. And I didn't cut Corallhelm, since he's needed in that slot. Plus he keeps me perfectly...

General What build arounds do you run?

This article, as part of his series on archetypes, discusses your question directly: http://www.magicmadhouse.co.uk/articles/2013/12/under-the-hood-whats-in-an-archetype-part-two/ The main idea is "indicator cards" should point your drafters toward certain archetypes (e.g., Champion of the...

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

I run him, but the jury is still out. I think he should be interesting/good, but has probably been a bit too narrow lately. I am upping my flashback count, so I want to hold on for a bit and see how he fits in.

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

Getting caught up on posts, but I just cut this from my cube after trying it out for the last several months. Ultimately, it was too situational and inconsistent to really be worth a spot. Ended up replacing it with Brainstorm #4. The one time I built a strong control deck that wanted to get...

General What other formats do you use your cube for?

Microsealed has been great for me. Grid drafting was also pretty good. We tried Sealed Draft (half a sealed pool opened, followed by a normal draft). It kind of sucked - bad decks and awkward drafting. We had 5 show up for several drafts in a row, and did an interesting modification: 5...

    General Breaking Singleton

I am doubled up on fetches/shocks, and running these: Gravecrawler Gravecrawler Deathrite Shaman Deathrite Shaman Young Pyromancer Young Pyromancer Brainstorm Brainstorm Brainstorm Birthing Pod Birthing Pod Seems pretty similar to the rest of the lists, though I have found double DRS to...

General Auras: Do they all suck?

I actually run Unstable Mutation at the moment. The goal was to give Blue some options for early damage, especially with 1 drop flyers. I'm keeping an eye on it, but it has seen at least marginal play so far.

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

My cube is mid-power, and generator servant has been seeing play pretty often. It's on my watch list (many other great red 2 drops), but so far my play group seems to like it well enough. Not amazing, but solid, and can definitely lead to some blowouts if setup properly.

    General CBS

The killing a goldfish reviews have been a great way to catch up on all the mtg history I missed as well as establish some deep regrets that I didn't play during Time Spiral. I probably love board complexity way too much. But yeah, the reviews are well done.

    General MODO Cube Redesign

I agree that the language in the article is quite encouraging. Removing some of the blatant violators (e.g., swords) is good, and I like they are more focused on fixing lands that don't completely suck. I am going to play the optimist and say this might be their first step toward real, solid...

    General "Colorless" Cube

I think you would have to push some sort of resource acquisition tension to replace the color pie in draft, and you would have to push it hard. Maybe it could be done with extreme synergies? Magic, and drafting, is fundamentally about the colors. I like the general idea of a totally new...

General How do YOU plan to use the various Conspiracy cards?

I think the challenges is that, baring a few creatures, most people don't break singleton too aggressively in cube. At fewer than 4 of the single cheap creature in my deck, Secrets of Paradise isn't worth the pick.

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

Final Fortune has been in my cube since the beginning, and is a great "story" card. I have at least 2 people who would kill me if I ever took it out -- it's their favorite card in the cube. As far as actual quality, it can be decent in a fair number of situations, but it's probably not a top...

General How Much Burn is Too Much Burn

I agree with Chris that, baring a special burn archetype, this would fall under a larger removal discussion. That said, if this is the bulk of your removal in red, it's a similar percentage to what I run in my cube.
