I've heard you can get pretty close with some overseas stuff. I've not looked into it though. I'd rather run real cards, but clearly there is no way I can ever afford a black lotus. I mean, even if I did find some way to buy one, it would strike me as the most foolish money I've ever spent in...

Wizard's if they had souls would get rid of the mythic card type, offer to buy people out from under their ridiculous $3000 lotuses etc, burn the reserved list to the ground, and then reprint every single card on the secondary market that is more than $5 in a giant massive common set print run...

    [Design/Discussion] The Spiral

If you want to stick to the land theme, there's gift of estates (though is limited to plains so shock lands?) or Tithe might be better.

Oh my. How much is it? EDIT: $60.... sigh. This game pisses me off sometimes.

    Community Project: 4-at-a-time Battlecruiser Cube

Nice thing about the pet is the effect is on cast, so you don't have to wait a turn, attack or tap, etc. And it's a serious threat unless you discard an elf or something.

    Community Project: 4-at-a-time Battlecruiser Cube

Wow. That's pretty nifty. Garbage as a 3 drop, but for 6 mana in a reanimator deck, it's an 8/8 flyer that sets up your next fatty? How have I never seen that card before? Speaking of Dralnu, is burn janky enough in this list to run this dude as a crazy instant/sorcery CA engine? Art is...

    Community Project: 4-at-a-time Battlecruiser Cube

What about tossing in Seething Song? There's a ton of expensive stuff in here worth ritualing into. Hellkite, Form of the Dragon, a kicked Urza's Rage, etc.

Oops! I should have checked that. DOH!

Pyromancy looks bad to me. 7 mana and 2 cards for your first payoff and it could be a land and deal 0. I don't know. But I dislike random effects like this quite a bit, so somewhat biased. If we want a whacky red enchantment, how about Pandemonium?

    General Midrange vs Combo Cubes

Good observation. Odyssey/Onslaught in particular (really many of the old blocks) seem to have just a crazy amount of interesting build-around mechanics. Some of it horribly unbalanced of course, but there's just a lot more to work with there than I was expecting when I started that...

That is sort of the point though. Otherwise, you just slap a 6+ mana sorcery on a body that at most is paying 3 for the effect (less really since this also tutors). It's simply too good still. Has to be a very large drawback to slamming something ridiculous. EDIT: Good point on the B comment...

    General Midrange vs Combo Cubes

I agree with you about that Diakonov. Everything in moderation in life and in cubing. Just reducing the percentage of ETB value guy density might be enough to curb things and get to that 40% number (which I agree is a good target).

I love the design of Arcane Savant but I can't run it because it's too good. What about a "fixed" version? Arcane Prodigy 3UU 3/3 When ~ ETB, you may search you library for an instant or sorcery card. If you do, exile it and play it without paying it's mana cost. You lose life equal to the...

    General Midrange vs Combo Cubes

Agree 100%. One of the drawbacks to the flatter power cube design. Goes to the thread you posted on emotional resonance. Some of the excitement is derived from doing unfair things. The more balanced and value based you go, the less of that you can find. And while it's nice to see the...

    General Midrange vs Combo Cubes

On the subject of midrange versus combo cube... we put a lot of emphasis here on balance and trying to remove GRBS. But in the end, truly balancing a meta is extremely difficult. Wizards has a staff of however many working full time and they can't even do it half the time. I play Magic once a...

    General Midrange vs Combo Cubes

So much this. LOL. And to your point Sigh, I scratch my head at some of the stuff he writes too. But I do that on the forums too, and I will sometimes come back a month later a year later whatever, and I have a different appreciation for the perspective I originally may have dismissed. And...

    General Midrange vs Combo Cubes

That blog has really cool insights. I enjoy it quite a bit despite running a pretty different cube and disagreeing on some of his stances. It's clearly well thought out and based on a lot of actual play experience.

    General Fight Club

Persecutor is a really cool card, but it's pretty damn strong. His drawback is very easy to mitigate in Bx decks, where as Desecration Demon can sometimes just be this useless thing that never gets to attack. I had to cut persecutor for being too good, but I always think about bringing it back...

    General Midrange vs Combo Cubes

Interesting article I'm just going to post a link to: http://mtgcube.blogspot.com/2016/05/the-two-kinds-of-cube.html For those who want the reader's digest version, it boils down to design philosophy: 1. Midrange cube has power restrictions and all (most) cards are meant to be playable in...
