Retreat is only better if you get to untap with Knight, which is a tall order in Modern. Scapeshift is often a OHKO with any landfall creature, and can kill them by itself if you get to 7 lands in a long game.

I also don't get 'you wouldn't play Impulse so...', Impulse is great! If you run 587 Brainstorms it's hard to find room, but instant speed on an effect like that is a big deal

There are lots of cards that wouldn't be playable in other colours. Ponder and Preordain are among the best instances of the best effect in the best colour. 'Gather the Pack isn't as good as Brainstorm' isn't an argument against it; 90% of the cards in most of our Cubes are worse than Brainstorm.

There just aren't enough good enchantments to make it work unless you're willing to make it a primary theme, break singleton a lot, and probably bring custom cards in too. Some of the Auras are fine but you want a mix of equipment, Auras, and instant/sorcery pump and leaning heavily on Auras...
