I wouldn't say 'well there you have it!' at all. A recurring problem with these stats articles is that the authors speak as if, because their mathematical reasoning is sound, their interpretations of the data must be as well even though a lot of it it hand-waving (why is 22 the threshold?)

They don't work with counters in the same way though, Geist helps cards that want counters while Avatar is a card that wants counters

While sorting cards recently I realized that the vast majority of creatures in my Cube are indeed Modern-legal but so are many of the spells. I think a lot of the older sets are poorly designed in general (or at least in the ways that matter) more so than favouring spells.
