That looks like a near perfect Jumpstart to me, Brad. There’s plenty of synergy within the pack, but it is open ended enough to interact with whatever it gets paired with. And it’s all tied together with a strong nautical flavour. You just need to make sure you use the Ixalan printing of Opt.

I tend to think of midrange as being board/battlefield advantage. It beats aggro by having beefier creatures, and is beaten by control which can use removal/counters to keep the board clear.

The situation where I could see both being used is against a “spells matter” deck: counter an instant and the Young Pyromancer token too. The trouble is, that is the archetype that might be most keen to play this card.
