    General Fun Budget Cube Cards

I'm not sure how this would run in a superbudget list, but I've just decided to put an old bulk rare favorite that I had dropped back in: Praetor's Grasp. It's one of those cards that made no impact in any format, but is oddly perfect for cube--basically a Bribery for artifacts. It's skill...

General Decks that have 3-0'd your cube

Did Kozilek ever get cast? It seems there aren't enough sweepers or blockers to live long enough to get him out there, with only Mana Vault and Grim Monolith to accelerate. Oh, and I recently pulled both of those artifacts from my cube, and the VERY NEXT DRAFT Kozilek hit the board about five...

Sets Seacoast Drake is the Best Card in M14

There are plenty of very strong cards that are very good at blocking. I've found I've had to cut them to help aggro out. A set filled with a ton of 2/5s or 1/3s tends to have stagnant combat and weak aggro. I agree it's a fine card, but not one I'd want in my cube.

    Card/Deck [SCD] Opposition

Facing down an Opposition is incredibly painful. Cool? Maybe. Fun? Nope. At first I presumed you were joking... Also, have you seen the Split Card Cube? I have a copy, and you can justify running all sorts of bonkers narrow uncubable cards in it, as long as their stapled to a... um, cube staple.

    Card/Deck [SCD] Opposition

I've locked down boards with my weenies and tokens with this card in everything but UR. It's best in a token build (which I support heavily), but it also works very well in a UG build with lots of mana elves. You power out your midrange/five-drop, and either tap their blockers or their land. I...

Card/Deck [MCD] Cards that create Subgames!

I've enjoyed the Shrine of Burning Rage/Shrine of Loyal Legions subgame (if they meet the technical definition used here). The visible, slow mounting of pressure distorts all other game play decisions until they finally draw a shatter effect or go off. In a similar fashion, Greater Gargadon...

General Ways to run an online cube draft

Hey, sorry I'm late to the discussion. I do still have my MTGO cube, and am happy to draft and play it with folks again. The entire thing is around $60 for a 360, so I'm not too worried about theft. Tappedout with bots can be fine, and I've found that Winstoning online works well, too...

    Card/Deck [M14] Elvish Mystic

I have to say, Chris, that most of the time I have no idea what you mean with your posts. But I like it! I think! Your online persona reminds me of this: http://liartownusa.tumblr.com/post/44189893625/apple-cabin-foods-no-2

    Card/Deck [MCD] Sweeperz

Since I refuse to pay for a card like Damnation, I stuck Life's Finale in my cube as a black wrath replacement. It's actually been surprisingly good in our slower environment. Yanking their best three creatures out of their deck lategame can leave them without a meaningful win condition. If...

    Card/Deck [M14] Elvish Mystic

Alpha to 6th: Do you see "elves" here? DO YOU? THE GLORIOUS 7TH: Elves! Plural! Dammit! They were so awesome when they're correctly plural that they WERE BANNED FROM 8TH EDITION FOR BEING TOO AWESOME! (That has to be the reason, right?) DESPITE THE FIRST DUDE WEARING A BATTLE TIARA! 9th...

General A Thought About Two Player Drafting

Wait, are you talking about cube or stack? I have strong opinions about 2-player cubes, and no opinion about stacks...

    Card/Deck [M14] Elvish Mystic

Sorry, back on topic. There are seventeen editions of Llanowar Elves. Seventeen! And 16 of the 17 are actually "Llanowar Elf" (or even "Severed Llanowar Elf Head.") If anyone plays anything other than 7th edition, they should have their cubes taken away from them for flavor violations.

    Card/Deck [M14] Elvish Mystic

Now, that's just mean. So, how many mana elves does a 360 list need? Go!

    General Random White Card Slot

I absolutely adore Harm's Way in my cube. It's good to have combat tricks available to keep people on their toes, and it's definitely one of the most cubable ones. You can 3-for-1 folks with a 1-mana card, if you're lucky, and it is a 2-for-1 more often than not.

General I actually played magic this weekend.

On Force of Will: having to worry about a counterspell when your opponent is tapped out is a gameplay tension that I enjoy having in my cube, although it's not as powerful a card in the format as you'd expect, given its reputation. I've really enjoyed having it in. On Phyrexian Arena: man, I...

    Card/Deck Lands in Cube

Lands are something I feel strongly about, and approach from a very different direction from most cube designers. My cube began as a very, very budget cube. (My rule was that I would keep costs down by not sleeving, and therefore not be tempted to buy good cards. That didn't last...) As everyone...

Site News Introducing Matt Kranstuber to the RiptideLab team!

When I first was building my cube with absolutely no cards to work with, a few folks over at MTGS mailed me extras of staple cheaper cards. It enabled me to get my cube up and running on the very limited budget I was working with. Well, Kranny sent me--a dude he didn't know, who'd only started...

General [Format Discussion] Modern Masters is Totally Incredible

Yesterday's MM event was the very first time I've ever played Magic officially. I've never done a draft at a store, an FNM, anything. Seven rounds of sealed in a stuffy sweaty basement with no time to get anything to eat, and serious players (Competitive Rules Enforcement in effect!) It was...

General Decks that have 3-0'd your cube

My last game at the Modern Masters sealed last night, he had Sarkhan Vol out, and two goblins. I had Dreamspoiler Witchers, and when I played dragged down was able to kill both tokens. Yay me! Then he cast Glacial Ray, Empty the Warrens for six goblins, Vol'ed them into 2/2 hasters, won the...

Article Channel Waddell: Cube Draft #1

Yep, this is a fantastic article. It not only lays out a draft pick by pick and game by game, but you are able to show how your unorthodox cube actually drafts and plays in real life. Why did you not take fixing in the Utility Land Draft pick 2? It seemed a bit odd after you describe how...
