I think the whole "solved format" thing isn't really a problem unless you value brewing potential and novelty really highly, as long as the format is somewhat healthy.

My original idea was the battlefield, because I feel like that's more interesting? Sac outlets suddenly become more interesting for everyone, and Kaervek's Spite is suddenly an awesome way to finish out a game.

I think it's a good thing because it helps remind new players that you really should be holding up mana for your second main phase.

This is a pretty cool idea! I do think that you're going to be limited to two-player drafts if you're treating it like a desert cube, because you'd need at least ten more lands for a three player draft unless the curve is really low (and that's not going to be the case with an EDH deck).

Yeah, the choice between Guardian and Kraken is going to be almost entirely based on the power level of your format. An evasive 4/5 for {3}{U}{U} is so much stronger than a 5/6 for {4}{U}{U} that the comparison isn't really fair. So it really comes down to "what do your other 5/6 drops look like?"
