I'm looking for a replacement for Karn. More speficially: I'm looking for an expensive colorless card that can deal with any permanent, is playable (unlike Spine of Ish Sah), but not as oppressive as Karn in a lower powered cube.

It's not that they can't balance a format around high-powered removal cards like Swords to Plowshares and Thoughtseize, it's that the power level and type of creatures (and other removal cards) needed to balance the format around that...

I was looking to include The Abyss, but that card is way too expensive for me. It's also a hard to deal with enchantment, which bothers me a bit, because the effect is so strong. Other Abyss-like effects don't really cut it for me. Magus of the Abyss has to destroy itself, Anowon, the Ruin Sage...

Not entirely true, but thinking out of the power max box is not the strong point of their most vocal members. MTGS is a pretty good resource for baseline data like power rankings though, and the SCD's and MCD's contain interesting food for thought.

If I were to put Tinker back in, Myr Battlesphere is definitely going out. When I replaced Tinker with Ensoul Artifact in a recent update I got to add Myr Battlesphere back in. Playing with the Battlesphere felt really good this weekend, and a lot more honest than playing Karn Liberated.

All of the good fixing is in the cube, but I do run Temples and some lesser fixing options in my utility land draft.

Oh for sure, but when you end up with one of those three cards, it's pretty convenient that there's a land in the utility land draft that supports your two main colors while also letting you splash that third color for your bomb.

Oh, I'll add - unbridled cube size - cube size and impact on supported archetypes

- the poison principle - including too many expensive cards/not keeping an eye on your mana curve - not enough mana fixing - not being aware of how many cards it takes to support aggro vs midrange/control - not using proxies to try out expensive cards (then find out the card is not a good fit)

Hmm... I run exactly three 3-color gold cards: Karador, Ghost Chieftain, Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker and Maelstrom Wanderer. I could of course include just the trilands for each of those.
