The awesome thing about the hammer is that it's a card that likes to be cast on curve while still providing you with a reasonable ability for later in the game.

Utility Land Draft. Cards like Desolate Lighthouse, manlands and others are great manasinks that don't necessarily cost a slot in your deck.

I've been using that rule too and its quite nice to go from 7 to 6 + scry, most of the time people don't go below 6 though.
