It's nice to see green getting in on artifacts more and more in recent years. Being the "we hate artifacts" color has been a downer for green in the past. Making a cube with an artifact theme across all five colors is more and more possible. I think the card selection is still a little spotty in...
Interesting! I wasn't reading Herodotus in junior high school (unless there was a reference to it in Sid Meier's Civilization somewhere), so it was better late than never when I saw this on a MTG card.
The themes in those articles keep getting recycled. I don't know what else I should expect, because there's always going to be a tension between conflicting goals, and they'll swing one way and then swing the other way.
He often talks about making good connections between the sets over the...
I'm exploring 1967 right now, but without the benefit of LSD. I'm still enjoying myself.
If an alien browsed this thread, they wouldn't know that humans ever had rock music.
You might have to help me interpret this. Is this a "kicker was a mistake" and/or "everything is kicker" cultural reference?
I like to see more cards with recurring old mechanics like kicker, cycling, and flashback. I hope we get a couple of simple, elegant kicker cards that can go into some cubes.
Yeah. But I think this card makes some sense. If green is the creature color, make it the creature color. I don't love power creep, but how much weaker can you make this before it's unplayable in anything besides retail draft?
I've finally gotten some decent MTGA drafts in, and I'm inclined to agree that this is a really great set to draft. The archetypes can blend together in many ways, and drafting and deck building decisions are interesting and challenging.
I think they've found a solution to a fundamental flaw of...
During Mirrodin-Kamigawa standard, I got so sick of shrines on MTGO that I made a deck with maindeck Eon Hub and played random opponents until I found a shrine deck to victimize.
Effing shrines.
I've played some standard zombies on MTGA lately, and there's nothing better than finishing off the opponent with Fell Stinger's exploit ability life loss, especially if you're dead on their next turn.
The rest of the Jumpstart packs are below.
My daughter and I played a couple of games - she enjoyed checking out the cards that were new to her, which was most of them. We each looked at three packs and picked two. Jumpstart is pretty fun! It's such an easy way to grab a deck and get into a...
I've updated the Beginner Cube to make it work as a set of 16 Jumpstart packs in addition to being a cube. The themes aren't really tight within the packs, which is fine - I want the decks to act like draft decks. I believe there is a bit of cross-pollination of themes between the packs.
Each...
This is a fair question. My general attitude about planeswalkers is that they're fun to cast and activate - I've played a whole bunch of them in decks online - but that the game might be a little better without them. I'm not completely married to this stance, but I learned Magic well before...
Beginner Simplicity Cube Updates as of 12/5/21

I made substitutions to make the whole cube cheap. Just now I was able to order 193 of the 195 cards on TCGplayer for about $24 in one shipment using Mass Entry and Cart Optimizer. Add ~100 basic lands, and that’s a beginner cube for the...
I've been taking an inventory of simple instant speed combat tricks, and here's a fun little low powered boon cycle. Blue doesn't quite keep up with the pack, but it's still neat.
