    Eric Chan's Modern cube (405)

Yeah, I hear you. They're definitely aimed at the control decks and only the control decks. While I really wanted them to work out for the exact reasons you mentioned, in practice they never did much of anything, or were too unwieldy to activate every turn. Don't forget that while my cube is...

    Eric Chan's Modern cube (405)

I've tried them both at various points, and they're both pretty underwhelming. It's mostly the mana they tie up turn after turn that makes them too slow to be practical. Icy Manipulator has been legal in a lot of Standard formats, but it hasn't done anything since the mid-90's. Magic is just too...

    Sets Journey to Nyx Spoilers

Anybody else a really big fan of the bestow-with-a-drawback cycle of uncommons? I don't know if these are all cubeable - hey there, green porcupine! - but I love how aggressively costed they are. The blue and red ones, in particular, seem like such giant beatings. I can't wait to try these out.

    Sets Journey to Nyx Spoilers

At first glance, I read over new Ajani and said to myself, "casual card". The more I mull over it, though, the more I'm inclined to think it might be good. Part of it is that he reminds me of a planeswalker we all know and love, the one that's unquestionably the best in cube. Elspeth...

General Unpopular Fun/Effective Cards in Your Cube

Holy crap, that's an awesome suggestion. I've been looking for more situational removal spells, rather than universal ones like Dismember, and Snakeform fits the bill. I like that it's more of a combat trick than anything else - you still have to actually kill the creature somehow, usually...

    Sets Journey to Nyx Spoilers

Yeah, the equip cost really kills it for me. At that cost, I'm pretty sure it's just inferior to Loxodon Warhammer, which very few of us cube.

General First Swing with the cube

I do run Silverheart in my list, yes. While he's pretty strong here too, I feel like he's at a good spot for an aggro curve-topper at five, especially when most of the other competing slots are all so midrangy.

    GBS

I've been playing Threes, the game that spawned 2048, so I say go for it. They're similar enough that I'm hoping any strategy will be applicable across both games.

General First Swing with the cube

If Wolfir Silverheart is too good in your cube - I find he's generally way more high-impact than something like Thragtusk in most cube environments - you could downgrade him to the underrated Druid's Familiar. It was very good in its limited format, and six power for four mana spread over two...

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

I seem to recall reading that R&D had designed it as a {1}{G}{G} 0/1, but because it was a YTMC vote thingy, the casual audience preferred to boost its toughness in exchange for a mana in the cost. gahhhh

I heartily endorse peasant over pauper!

If someone starts taking too long, or leaves to go to the bathroom, I call out of the name of the next person and tell them it's their turn. Having a second person simultaneously looking over the lands puts enough pressure on the first person that they usually make their pick right quick after...

    Eric Chan's Modern cube (405)

Nah, it's not that bad. Of the playable miracle cards, Revenge of the Hunted doesn't feel too unfair or soul-crushing, even at {G}. Part of it is that you aren't guaranteed to wipe their board, like with a Bonfire - anything from a tapped creature on their part to an evasive creature on yours...

General I Was Completely Wrong About. . .

Mirror Entity didn't do a thing the whole two years it was legal in Standard, and yet it's a house in cube. I'll never understand this. Meanwhile, Goldmane was good to great in Standard, but is just ok-ish in cube. It's probably because he doesn't have four Spectral Processions to play around...

Card/Deck Theme in black and white

Whip of Erebos actually hoses midrange harder than it hoses aggro, in my experience. The decks that would plaster you to the wall by turn four will still have no problem doing so, but the decks that take four turns durdling to build up their ramp or token strategies have a tougher time...

Card/Deck Theme in black and white

Yeah, I'm gonna agree with Mondschwein above. Without any explicit support on my part for the deck, "life payment + life gain" has become one of the preferred archetypes around here. People seem to love dealing damage to themselves with cards like Bob, Bitterblossom, and more recently Herald of...

    Article ChannelFireball: Utility Land Draft

Still just one copy of each. Just introduces a bit more tension between taking fixing with all your picks and taking spell lands. This also lets me upgrade my fixing cycle in good conscience, from the admittedly underwhelming painlands to more palatable Scars fastlands + ISD buddy lands.

    Eric Chan's Modern cube (405)

I threw it in assuming it'd be a dud, but it's been pretty popular here, and something of a fan favourite. People like to run it in their aggro decks as a surprise damage-dealing tactic, and it fills that role pretty well in a colour that doesn't have many tricks that combine burst damage with...

    Eric Chan's Modern cube (405)

Squadron Hawk is such a sweet card. I'm pretty sure the pick-one-get-four bundle of Hawks would be too good in my low-power skewing list, as they're decent enough already when you take them one at a time here. Maybe I should just shove four back in and call it a day.
