I handle it like this as well, I don't like free spells in my meta. My only exception is Devouring Light, but I could see me replacing that if it feels wrong at one point. But I can't remember seeing it cast for free while the player was tapped out.

Have you tested it in cube context? I was tempted to try it, but it just seemed a little too expensive. I would've loved to play it, mayba with a 1B cost, or as a 1/1 with a B cost. Also black is my tightest color.
