Yeah but mostly ‘You lose 1 life’ since most cards aren’t instants. I would say it is a sidegrade since one card doesn’t lose you life but also doesn’t exile. And Check for Traps can never gain you life. Only make players lose them.

I think they meant 'Madness' as the deck theme and not the mechanic. Meaning the deck could be called 'Madness' and still only have 3 madness cards in the entire 40 card list. So in other words: It's a payoff card for a deck that you could name Madness.

@shamizy I completely agree. It is worth noting that Phyrexia won last time we saw them. Argentum -> Mirrodin -> New Phyrexia. Everyone on Mirrodin either died, became part of Phyrexia or escaped/planeswalked. The plane is completely lost from the perspective of the good guys. Game over.
