Regarding planeswalkers on in D&D: (It’s a link. You can click on it to read it all.) They had an opportunity here to create a Magic set without walkers but they wanted to ‘upgrade’ a few characters from legendary creatures to planeswalkers just because they thought it would be cool.

The upside I can see in the new SDD idea is the excitement players will feel several times each tournament. First with the random low power cards and then again when they unlock better and better cards. Kind of like when you defeat a boss in Slay the Spire and get one rare card and a boss relic...
