I do feel the Recurring Nightmare ability is fairly costed at -2. Comparing it to Venser is pretty misleading, because Venser can't get that Shriekmaw back if it's in the yard instead of in play, and Venser can't upgrade a cheap, worthless creature to a six+ mana creature with a lot of impact...

Do remember that improvise does not reduce the colored mana component of a mana cost. It's not exactly like convoke for artifacts. Fatal Push seems super awesome though. Greenwheel Liberator seems sick off of a fetchland! o_O

Grabbing Starstorm is a horrendous idea, since you get to cast the spell for X = 0 ;) sigh's suggestions are wonderful though. It also interacts hilariously with split cards, allowing you to cast either half, even if the side that's red or white had a cmc > 4 and the side that has a cmc <= 4...

Yeah, it's more that the stats are irrelevant (in as far that 2/2 and 1/1 are both bad on a 2 drop), you want spell damage on a cheap body, and Thalnos is better than the Kobold because it replaces itself when it dies.

First seems incredibly pushed, since you can just ignore the ability and enjoy a super efficient haste beater. I like the second design better, just not sure if 3/3 is big enough when it shrinks so fast.
