How can we design around this mechanic?

Tie-ins: Spellskite/Immolating Souleater/Hex Parasite (+ fateful hour), Phyrexian mana in general, Invigorate, Grove of the Burnwillows

tbh I see more potential in specific dethrone cards and less in the mechanic in general

Is it too gamey to have cards like "when CARDNAME ETBs, lose 5 life. when CARDNAME leaves the battlefield, gain 5 life." ?

Painful manabases in general would help.

Honest question though: Why would we want to? I guess there is some element of brinksmanship in it, but the actual card pool with this mechanic isn't very interesting. Like Dom said, a couple of the cards are cool, but as a whole they don't do much. With some custom cards it could work.

I'm mostly thinking custom card territory. Something for the custom cube. The mechanic intrigues me but I don't know what to do with it.

I was seriously considering making Grenzo's cutthroat into {R} without first strike. Might be too strong though if you have "enablers".

marchesa + gavony township = 5 color +1/+1 counters

a serious answer has to do with paying life. cards like spellskite come to mind. the life-payment death's shadow decks are a possibility, check out the latest Woo videos on CFB or the latest Gerry T vids on SCG. specific card choices off the top of my head

spellskite
mutagenic growth
grove of the burnwillows
spoils of the vault

unspeakable symbol is right in your wheelhouse but it also sucks. run a few magiccards.info searches

also cross-reference with the +1/+1 counter thread!

There's three approaches: you want cards where you pay life or lose life in order to help turn the dethrone on. Then you want life gain cards so you can draft a deck with life payment and life gain (synergy). Then cards that utilise the +1/+1 counters on the dethrone guys.

Onderzeeboot

Ecstatic Orb
There's the Masques block free spells that give your opponent life. Can't remember any of the names right now, but there's thir really ugly 2/2 wurmlike creature that I should post in the ugly art thread...

Sounds like it time to break this bad boy back out.

Not that you needed more incentive to play that broken card.

And the less broken options.

EDIT:
As a few have said, either add pay life cards or cards that give opponent life. I too think dethrone is a cool mechanic.

I want to see Moltensteel Dragon in said cube. As well as Nature's Claim and possibly some more phyrexian mana dudes like souleaters and crap....

Maybe there's room for an artifact subtheme here?

I'm reaching here now

Guys wait, why am I playing dethrone goblins?

wtf is this real helpful post. anyone try form or hatred? the other two are kinda staples (if you're not in the waddell school of slow n steady reanimation -- which btw i dont think theres much reason for given how high-power and removal-heavy the wadds main cube is these days; reanimate is just a fun and strong card, so is animate dead)

So I was getting all kinds of naughty with a list of every Hellion and Hellion-themed card in MtG, when I discovered this handsome devil for the Dethrone theme.

EDIT: For those special cats out there who love doing silly things, I hear that this sexy beast loves our previously mentioned pal no matter how bad he hurts her.
