I'm so conflicted about tutors. I love playing them, but I haven't put any in my cube because I suspect they're unhealthy in some ways. But part of me is dying to run stuff like Formidable Speaker and Imperial Recruiter.

I'm so conflicted about tutors. I love playing them, but I haven't put any in my cube because I suspect they're unhealthy in some ways. But part of me is dying to run stuff like Formidable Speaker and Imperial Recruiter.
I will say that stuff like that is simultaneously fairer (more restricted targets / more expensive to cast) and more unfair (easier to recur / flicker) than a conventional Vampiric Tutor.
In general I think they're good effects - when your deck wants to Imperial Recruiter into Young Pyromancer, for instance, it really wants to do that, and the increased consistency leads to making games more fun for the player - but I can respect the worries.
Formidable Speaker specifically looks like it'd fit great in the cube in your sig, between the discard/graveyard payoffs and presence of a few single copies of things I'd like to tutor up (putting Genesis in your hand is halfway to getting it into the bin!)
but I'm a lot more willing to put something in, shrug, risk it, and cut it if it doesn't work out, so in that way I'm deranged, don't listen to me

Honestly, I was really expecting some good Faeries stuff in Wilds of Eldraine given how much they hyped up the Faerie stuff in the marketing. While we did get Spell Stutter and Picklock Prankster, which are both fun rewards for having some Faeries in your blue deck and will certainly be keystones in any future Faeries Cube archetype, we didn't get any exciting reasons to play a Faeries deck, which was a big dissapointment.
Now I'm imagining a power-crept modern version of Spellstutter Sprite...
I think if they literally made it a Syncopate where X is the number of Faeries you control instead of a Spell Blast, we would have the card.
Counterspells haven't really gotten much more powerful in the past 20 years.
That’s exactly my guess as well. Although they might save this statline for a Universes Beyond variant.
I wish we had, in general, more counterspells that work against mv x or less. Prohibit is so akward because it doesn't counter three-drops on the draw. Why don't we have Smother as a Counterspell?

It's really good! It would definitely be one of the better cards in a standard format, it might have to be one of those pitched at modern cards, butit's not like, out of the stratosphere.
