General [ECL] Lorwyn Eclipsed

Power level feels a bit of a step down from 2025's sets, but that's not a bad thing. I'm really impressed with many of the designs, and it feels lovely to see flavor text so much more often than we've been used to.

I really like this guy. Dragon Sniper is in a lot of Cubes, and rightfully so. A 1mv deathtoucher with almost any other ability is Cubeable across a huge swath of power levels, which is also why I miss Grist, Voracious Larva, who was rightfully cut for being too complex and wordy.

As I've been going more into the life gain subtheme and finding it fun, I think this is a great mix of a bunch of things green wants to do, and if I end up ever going for a small elves tribal subtheme with cards like the above Champions of the Perfect and, more importantly, my beloved Galadhrim Brigade (partially as a way to retain value from jamming 3-5 mana dorks in your deck, which suck to draw late), this is even better.

I don't love a flicker that doesn't help me avoid a wrath, but I still think there's a ton to like about this card. This is basically the only mode anyone ever chose from Charming Prince on an instant. We haven't gotten another 2-drop creature with this ability before as an ETB besides, and while a dedicated flicker deck may not prefer the creature be a token, the instant speed is a big boost here to help your creatures avoid bad blocks or removal spells. Very interested in this one.

explosiveprodigy.jpg

Flametongue Yearling didn't do it for me for some reason. I like Vivid a lot as a way to encourage multicolor decks, and this feels very fair, which is its biggest issue. I think I'd cube this without issue if it were a 2/1 -- Fire Imp for the modern day seems like a wholly reasonable thing to have. Still, nice design.

curiouscolossus.jpg

White doesn't really need another big dude, even if I think the more flexible options I'd generally prefer are a little too strong like Overlord of the Mistmoors. That said, I like the ability, even with the memory issue inherent. It doesn't target your opponents creatures so it gets around a lot, and is fantastic to Sneak Attack in early.

dawnhanddissident.jpg
I'd rather not include it because it doesn't say what blight does, but I like what it's doing, fiddly mess and all.

abigaleeloquentfirstyear.jpg
I detest ability counters but I love this ability so much I may be able to overlook it. Lots of spicy things to do here, and (very) occasionally using it on your opponent's creatures is going to feel like a "get out of jail free" card. This one kicks ass on turn 2 following almost any turn 1, particularly if that t1 is a Savannah Lion type that was going to be stopped by a 1/2 or 1/3 otherwise.

auroraawakener.jpg

If this said "non-land", it'd be the easiest include of the set. I think green should have this kind of Etali, Primal Conqueror ability. It's fun, swingy, and I like the way it scales here. Still, I'm pretty interested in this.

Spoilers below:

I love me a Death's Shadow-like, and this is almost one. This one feels less punishing, which is less exciting but more generically playable. It's maybe too much hard work to get it there, though.

How is Moonshadow hard work at all? Crack a fetch and you got yourself a 2/2 menace for {B}. Cast a Faithless Looting and swing with a 4/4 on turn two. I am really clueless regarding constructed, but I'd be shocked if it doesn't see play, probably even in modern.

Btw, where did you get that nice readable picture? I only saw muddy leaks.

I'm reworking a slight self-discard archetype into my environment and Moon Shadow is a straight banger for it:

I don't really like -1/-1 counters in general for an environment that has +1/+1 counters, but I think this synergizes with enough things that it might be worth inclusion. I'm bringing back a minor looting/discard subtheme that could make this viable.

Each instance of permanent hitting your graveyard (regardless of number of cards) removes one -1/-1 counter so ideally you can curve this into something like a fetch + a looting effect for a 3/3 menace. Got plenty of playable options between Faithless Looting, Fear of Missing Out, and Scrapwork Mutt. You can also use stuff like Bristly Bill, Spine Sower's ability to essentially remove 3 counters with each fetchland (Landfall, Moonshadow trigger, Landfall again). Wombo-combo it to full power with Gravecrawler + Warren Soultrader loop. If you can get like 5-6 points of damage out of it before it dies then that's not a bad return for just one mana. Less moving parts to it than Death's Shadow.

Also this art is phenomenal, definitely interested in trying it out just for aesthetics alone.

This is my favorite from all the leaked stuff today.

I like having one heavy hybrid per guild and I like that heavy hybrid be flexible enough to work in either mono color deck while also being a bit of a signpost for the archetype most prominent in the color combination. Lluwen here is an ideal frontrunner for {B/G} dredge while also working with lands (mono {G}) and providing bodies to sacrifice (mono {B}). He also should be just at the right power level. I love Worm Harvest and still cube it as an occasional, but it is pretty repetitive - Lluwen should not have this problem, as a 1/3 can be much more easily be interacted with than a retrace sorcery.

This spoiler season already made me so happy.

Oh for constructed I knew it'd be a beating, but it does require a lot of game actions was my point in a Cube context. The "work" you're doing is pretty minimal and not limited to one a turn, I was certainly being a little too pessimistic. It's a slam dunk.

The leaker posted HD images too in the comments. I didn't crop this one out, just took it from the Cube subreddit.

More leaks below:

Giantfall! I just finally caved and added Suplex but I might prefer this one for being instant speed, even if I like the exile clause for artifacts and the imperviousness to getting blown out in comparison. It's close!

Screenshot 2026-01-05 at 2.50.06 PM.png

Here come the fairies everyone was hoping for!! I like this one the most. Il Mheg Pixie is on-deck for my Cube, but I like this better for both the bigger surveil and instructing the "play stuff on your opponents turn" mini archetype.

Screenshot 2026-01-05 at 2.50.00 PM.png

Then there's Glamer Gifter! Compares ok to Plumecreed Escort, a card I liked enough to buy but haven't tested. I think this is more interesting than hexproof (more ways to be aggressive about it, more than just responsive), but the 1/2 stats are just not as impressive to me. If the power and toughness were swapped, I'd be much more interested.

I think a tapper for 1 is already a totally fine Cube card. Goldmeadow Harrier and the like are staples in Peasant/Pauper Cubes for a reason, and totally serviceable at higher power levels too. But when you make it a Savannah Lion as a baseline? Wow! It more than makes up for requiring another untapped creature to use, even if that's admittedly a big cost.

I think I like the gameplay value of this higher than any of the Savannah Lions printed in the last five years, to be completely honest, and it'll likely be joining Descendant of Storms for me.

I really like this thing for a lower powered list? The floor is a solid attacker that will probably take something with it if they don't chump it, and pairing it with Llanowar Elves and the like offers a serious clock if you can keep the board clear.

Tribal Flames at home.

Check this thing out! The whole Vivid ability word is perfect for my Multivalent cube. If there are enough cool cards with this kind of payoff, I'm going to have to find room for the Alara Reborn blade cycle, too!
Same...

I'm really liking the hybrid density so far. Interestingly, hybrids can support Vivid as well as monocolor decks. Might be able to make a cube that plays with color a bit.

Nice set so far. Passing the vibe check for a change.

How do you get this to a 4/4 with Faithless Looting? Moonshadow loses a counter for each instance of permanents going to the yard, not one counter per permanent card.

This is a cool one. I think of it as a Skyknight Squire in green, that has trample and ward {2} to begin with, but can only scale to a 6/6. Seems like a good trade to me!

I like how it supports the obvious green 'go-wide' theme, but also slots really well into simic flash since you can grow it at instant speed without fear of it instantly being removed. Like with Moonshadow, there's also fun shenanigans to be had with Manifest Dread, Varolz, the Scar-Striped, etc.

Seems amazing? Both sides are efficiently costed, and it's a heck of a lot of value if you can get both effects and a creature out of the deal. A very clean answer to the The One Ring if that's something you're running, and the body is big enough to be a half decent reanimation target if need be.

I think I like this even more than Vibrance, and am thinking of trying both, even if the former's art kind of hurts me to look at. These evoke elementals make me want to put Up the Beanstalk back in.

If your fixing isn't great, these elemental incarnations definitely go down a tier, but if you can evoke them when you need to they offer a lot of flexibility.

Just a very good land. I can see this working in basically every cube, provided you're not worried about the free fixing adding to your soupiness.

Unfortunately not a lot else that caught my interest today. I'm sure someone else will post the new Ajani, but it's the most boring planeswalker I've ever seen. A lot of this set is turning out to be very parasitic for cubes too, but it at least has me excited for its limited format!

I've not been as hot on these as everyone else, but this is my favorite of the cycle. I really love every different version of the spell, whereas with others, I've only liked half the modes. This one is totally fine as a mono blue or mono green card, whether you evoke it or not! I think the strong stats and cheaper cost help my appreciation here.

Oh, this is the easiest inclusion of the set so far. I love a good 5C land -- to think my Cube started off with Ancient Ziggurat back in the day.

Jubilation.png

Craterhoof Behemoth has been a key card in my Cube since basically the beginning, but this may be joining his ranks soon. I've tried out a lot of the variants over the years as supplements -- the coolest being Great Oak Guardian -- but I think the unearth/encore here really helps my interest in the card. I love a creature that loves to sit in the graveyard, and 9 mana is not wholly unreasonable in green decks, especially when they'll be joined by a 7/7 hasty trampler. Very interested here.

Ajani is indeed a little boring but he's actually the only white card for 3 mana or less that generates a creature token every turn that asks nothing out of you besides Soldier Military Program. I tried to prove myself wrong on Reddit and it is really interesting how novel this is, even if it feels so old hat.

The new Evoke cycle of elementals is pretty sweet, Vibrance and Wistfulness are both definitely getting runs in my environment. Love all the effects available to both of them. Great time to bring in the combo of:

For Nissa, Resurgent Animist extending that trinket text to include elves AND elementals hits enough of a critical mass in my environment to make it work now. In addition to the two that I mentioned these are the elementals currently in my cube:

And then for Up the Beanstalk I've also got the following that can be cast with some flexibility to trigger it:

Not bad. I think if you can draw one extra card from either Nissa or Beanstalk with consistency they're definitely worth inclusion. Just looking at this color distribution maybe a sick Sultai Beanstalk deck would be possible in the future.

More good news, the {G/U} bicycle land was leaked from the commander release. Fingers crossed they also give us the missing {W/B} and {U/R} versions.

We got the {G/U} tango and the {G/U} bicycle. It's a shame that they don't just... print the rest of them? It's not like they're chase cards or anything...

Also, how's this for a blast from the past?

I am so delighted by all the Elemental Incarnations so far. These are definitely sparking joy and I want them all.
I was so nervous that the GU one would be pushed as hell because WotC loves doing that. Still think a white and/or red one will be fucking trash, ruining the chance to run the whole cycle.

This has been bothering me for a while and I think that most of the community misuses the term, so I'm not calling you out.

Trinket text is not text that you don't like or use. Trinket text is something that will rarely be relevant, but is flavorful.

I see people call "Choose a Background" or other EDH-specific text "trinket text" a lot of the time. It's not. It's extremely relevant and important text in another format.

In this case, Nissa's ability to befriend Elves and Elementals may not be terribly relevant to your cube, but is likely to be a primary feature for any EDH decks running her and is one of the main reasons to run her over a Lotus Cobra. It's very important to the card mechanically.

Trinket text is something like Hundred-Handed One specifying the number of additional creatures it can block instead of saying "any number." It's irrelevant text 99% of the time.

Sometimes the line is a little blurry, like on Baneslayer Angel. Protection from Demons and Dragons is mostly there to show us what kinds of banes it might be slaying, but can definitely be relevant at times. It's probably only irrelevant text 90-95% of the time.
