Sets [FIN] [UB] Final Fantasy

Normally I just kind of shrug off most of the commander cards, but...

Staff of the Storyteller says hello, even if this isn't really a two-drop.

lordjyscalguado.jpg

This does a lot for the cost, since it's even "each end step", even if I don't often have a deck that's putting counters on creatures twice per turn cycle.

"Heroic matters" is even a thing I'm trying out! also get fucked, Arbaaz Mir, that's actually hilarious.

White doesn't often get one of these cost reductions, so this is cool.

Tiered continues to impress me with card designs I will never put in my own cubes but I keep wanting to see more

...I just like BLU, okay?

"red ninja" is just neat!

Posting the sagas since they're the coolest. Scryfall will probably have them all relatively soon.

I think I like Ixion, although it seems kind of weak. The other white ones aren't as exciting. Blue one is probably a bit too annoying to play against in any deck that would actually use it, and that color already has a lot of solid Sagas.
Red one is potentially a cool reanimate target since you would have other large creatures you want to discard to the third step, but it might honestly deal too much damage. Green one is very random, seems both fun and frustrating, pretty dangerous as a curve topper.

This definitely gets most cube environments to the critical mass necessary for dedicated +1/+1 count themes branching through GW decks. So many playable versions of this effect now:

And then you can use the above Summoner's Sending and Lord Jyscal Guado to benefit majorly off of them! I think this set is what pushes me over the edge with +1/+1 counters, and Shelinda, Yevon Acolyte is a good one to help do that.

My favorite of the +1/+1 counters also overlaps with Legendary-Matters, the above Ardbert, Warrior of Darkness. What a neat card. I like that he adds two counters if you do play a BW card, though that'll be much less common in Cube.

I am also obsessed with SNORT. Giving a wheel effect flashback? The dream. Making it a pain for your opponent to join you in spinning the wheel? Lovely.

Some other cards:

The Falcon, Airship Restored
Suuuper medium power but great play pattern. I also will always take a careful look at any card that can be played from the graveyard.

Pretty neat. Gettable with Urza's Saga and Brightglass Gearhulk. Gets back the Gearhulk! 3 and 4MV dudes these days are good enough that you don't mind spending three mana over two turns to bring one back at the right time, and at instant speed no less! The tapped clause is not an issue -- it's flavorful and lets you get ETB effects at instant speed without also ruining combat math. I only run 19 dudes plus a dozen or so tokens that qualify for the removal half of this, so it's really mostly the first effect. In all seriousness, it's probably not good enough...but only due to the exile. I'm still considering it.

I'm much happier to spend an artifact on this kind of card than a gold card (a la The Ancient One). It's basically a self-milling Manalith that becomes a God later in the game...a Cultivator's Caravan for the modern ages, if you will. I like what this is doing.

Bugenhagen, Wise Elder
We've been spoiled for 2M mana dorks lately. This one is definitely tier 1.5 at best, but it is a legendary creature! And it does draw cards once its main usefulness is complete! And it does block spirit tokens like a champ!! There's a lot going on here....both on the card and in the art.

Now that's good clean fun. Magic how it's supposed to be (other than it being Final Fantasy I guess, but since I barely know this franchise outside of 12 and 15, this looks just as Magic-y to me as the new Takrir elder dragons). Excited for my blue section to be heavy in dragons?

This set is incredible. There are a dozen more cards I want to talk about too!!

Sagas aside, here's a card I'm actually excited about. I love double-spelling payoffs, and importantly, I like them way more when they don't reward you with more cards that make it easy to keep doing it, which her brother(?) is doing. Plus I generally like the rate of this card, it's not incredibly overstatted, and the mana discount is significant, but not trivial considering it doesn't help with colored mana.

Extremely weird card, and I don't know if I want to pay 1 mana and 2 life for the wizard token on a black Faithless Salvaging, but I love instant speed and free madness enablers (and this takes turns being both), I want more instant-speed proactive plays in black, and I have a spell velocity theme. Also the art is cool and I don't really even have to retheme anything here if I were to include it.

This card looks great! Riptide Gearhulk had everyone excited at the prospect of double strike and prowess, which this easily has. The cost reduction is very solid too, discounting to zero for all your 1 mana artifacts.
If not for the frame, you could have told me it was in Tarkir and I would have believed you.

might be the green cheat effect I was waiting for!

I don't know what's happening but I don't like it. 48 hours on the bench. Next time longer.

I knew what happened but I am guessing you are not interested in fairness or to know what happened when your fingers are trigger happy like that. I’ll happily stay gone forever if this is how I am treated here.

I absolutely adore:
- Adventure Lands
- Saga Creatures
- Tiered spells

Do we know if we will be getting more than 5 Adventure Lands?

That gives me hope again to get some cheap white threats caring about noncreature spells in the main set. Even though it seems like the prowess theme there is in Grixis colors (?)

Almost certainly not, unfortunately:

Adventures return in this set. This time, you'll find them on a cycle of Towns.
There might be a sixth colorless one as part of the cycle, which is why I say "almost certainly", but I wouldn't bet on it.

I'm interested in not having multiple people ask me why they are getting interrogated in their DMs for liking a post on my forums, fair or not I guess.

Can’t really blame me for what others are texting you.

If you’re only interested in hearing one side of the story you will probably never know the truth or the whole story. I am just a punching bag I guess.
