Sets [FIN] [UB] Final Fantasy

My ears always perk up a little when I hear "sword of X and Y except no protection", so welcome, Sword of Bus and Ter

I'm not in the market for a weird Chandra's Ignition flashback Bedlam Reveler trigger... thing? But if I was this would be it!

Quina, Qu Gourmet

Redundancy for recent staple, Chatterfang, Squirrel General, a supremely underrated card.

There are so many incidental and repeatable token generators these days that hit the board in time to get value off Quina its first turn, whether for the trinkets like Ivora, Insatiable Heir, Astrid Peth, and Generous Plunderer or for creature tokens proper like Voice of Victory and Sinkhole Surveyor. Token generation can get out of hand quickly!!

I think I'll probably run this alongside Chatterfang, even though it's slightly worse and 3MV green is competitive for me, just because I really like this kind of effect so much. This is probably the one that'll kill off Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, who has been surprisingly unpopular lately.

edit: I am annoyed that this makes frog tokens, if only because I currently do not run anything that makes them and this gets to be yet another unique token generator.

oh, there's also this little number, which I suspect I'll enjoy very much in retail draft:

it does its thing as cheaply as possible which is always interesting

I love it. I ran Dueling Rapier for a while, and it was pretty good! I considered Hidden Footblade seriously, because in addition to doing the same thing on enter as Coral Sword, as a haste enabler, it promises for splashier later turns. But I think I'd prefer Coral Sword to the Footblade all the same, because the 1MV difference in equip cost is so so good (and haste's value is really hampered with every additional mana you have to spend on it).

In other news, I noticed that the revealed cards for FF have already been uploaded onto Cube Cobra!! So I decided to do my first Cube update with Final Fantasy cards, as the set's more than halfway spoiled and I can kind of "lock in" the ones I like. I'll be trying out 27 cards from the set as of writing:

There's more that I'd like to find room for too, but we're starting off the set in a very exciting place for what I'm trying to shift my Cube to.

Bro, how can you find 27 cuts. I struggle finding 5 when a new set arrives lol
My Cube is 720 cards!! But more importantly, this is a lot, yes, but it's part of my effort to cut some of the power outliers in my list. I'm sure these will have shorter shelf lives than most inclusions, but I'm using this set as a refresh of sorts.

I think it gets solved a little using the less good art.

Anyways, I do like it. I've been looking for an excuse to play Whitemane Lion again, and making it Legendary may be enough to do that? That said, Sunpearl Kirin is probably still preferable here, even if I think the upside of drawing a card from hitting a token (not too hard to do in my Cube) is a bit of an annoying upside from a "there's absolutely no way to lose" pov.

Happy we've gotten a few good variations of this kind of card lately either way (like the ugly but well-designed Nurturing Pixie), I really enjoy them.

I would argue that Final Fantasy is closer to MTG as an IP than either LotR / GoT / D&D. While MTG and FF are rooted in high fantasy, they've both expanded far beyond that.

I have been thinking a lot about this reply to me from you.

And I was definitely wrong and you were definitely right. I think I like at least 90 % of the art in this set and it fits into my view of how fantasy ‘should’ look.

Hellllll yeah. Anything with the text "return all lands from your graveyard to the battlefield" has got me interested.

Compares well to Vorinclex, which is one of my favorite super-complicated cards that I struggle justifying in my Cube. This does a very similar thing, but only attacks once, and is still reasonably complicated if you don't immediately get what a Saga+Creature would do but it's not quite super complicated.

I like Lasyd Prowler and have been thinking about it a lot, and this seems like a more splashy version of this effect.
