Sets [FIN] [UB] Final Fantasy

Mechanics absolutely fit Edgar's flavor. I imagine most cubes that want Edgar, King of Figaro are looking at the first ability, but hell, live the Ral Zarek dream, whatever!

I'm also kinda curious how this thing is going to work with Edgar:

My guess is that you auto-succeed on the first flip and then flip normally after that, but dear lord would it be horrifying if it worked the other way.

Nah, based off of how Edgar is worded (one or more), it's "for the first fiery gambit you play in the turn, you win all of the flips."
Mostly just because of the rules note: "You can flip any number of coins (you can even flip more than three), but Fiery Gambit has no effect if you lose any of the flips. You can’t continue flipping if you lose a flip." Which I suppose is only possible because of the line "choose to stop flipping" on fiery gambit.

So based off of that, I could flip a billion coins, Edgar says that I win all of them (again, for only the first fiery gambit each turn... Not sure if that really matter.)
Mathematically, this is only possible if Edgar is a dirty rotten cheater.

Also, because of fizzling, if the opponent removes the creature that you target for the first win, the rest of the spell (including the coin-flipping) will not happen. So, hooray.

I would guess this is the one that won't work, or any other coin flip cards that have the opponent call the result, but the coin flip rules are quite weird and Edgar contradicts this card so much.

But I would wait until the rules text is here before we "break" a format.

Either way, it definitely breaks

EDIT: I am perfectly okay with egg on my face if I turn out to be wrong by a judge cuz again, the coin flip rules are awful and incredibly weird.

It says right on the card, he's flipping a two-headed coin! It's a plot point! Both in a cutscene of backstory (his brother Sabin "lost" the coin flip to see which prince would inherit, because Edgar knew Sabin didn't want to rule but felt obligated, quoted in the flavor text) and in a plot-mandatory cutscene (when Setzer joins that scene revolves around both the coin flip and the reveal that it's two-headed)

a very on-point reference, honestly

Honestly wild that this card hasn't existed for five years, I knew there was Hobbit's Sting but I hadn't thought about how Armed Response was the closest they ever came to this as a standalone spell before now (there's weird stuff like Nahiri, Heir of the Ancients but no creatures-and-equipment)

Mostly putting this one here to complain that I am going to wish the last ability let me accelerate my opponent's Sagas a lot in the format where there are Saga creatures that I could kill early and make unable to block

edit: oh wow it says one "or more", you can also retrigger whatever ability your Saga creature is currently on before it dies from a state-based action from the fight, this card is way too galaxy-brained for an uncommon

I wonder if there will be a Saga creature in every booster, similar to Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. As I recall they were initially undervalued because of the delay in having the creature. These are the opposite as you have the creature right away but only for a short time. Nice design, and even though I know nothing about Final Fantasy the sagas are an excellent tool for telling a story on a card.

You don't flip all the coins at once. Mirror Match lets you flip coins until you lose one flip. That means you flip one coin, and if you win, you get to flip another one, but if you lose the streak ends. You card doesn't ask you to choose an arbitrary number of flips and see how many of those you win. Edgar would ensure you win that first coin flip, but after that you're on your own.

Here's an example that clearly tells you to flip a certain amount of coins at once, Edgar would win you all three flips in this case. The only other cases that currently let you win multiple flips at once with Edgar are Ral Zarek, Two-Headed Giant, Yusri, Fortune's Flame, Mutalith Vortex Beast, and Rakdos, the Showstopper. Oh, and technically Krark's Thumb, although that literally does nothing :)

That would make sense since they did it in Kamigawa as you said.

I am in love with both designs: Kamigawa’s Sagas that turn into creatures and Final Fantasy’s Saga Creatures.

However I do think the ones that die after only two attacks won’t feel much like creatures. I remember when we had Decayed Zombie token (eg Hobbling Zombie) to me they didn’t feel like creatures. These Sagas will linger longer.

How will opponent feel about having to cast a removal spell on them? I am curious to see how that turns out.

"mana was spent" paying off again, this card is way fairer than its hypothetical version that gets a Treasure off Force of Will (in a laudatory way, honestly, even if the card's obviously weaker for it)

I don't think that I personally am interested in colorless ramp Vehicle, but I recognize the power's definitely here to at least consider this. It even has haste to do its best Solemn Simulacrum impression! It's not exactly Jens - you don't get a card in hand but you do get "had to trade with a 4/4" which tends to be much more value than a 2/2, you can't get the land the turn it arrives if you can't crew it, you don't get to pick the land but you do get nonbasics - but it's at least ballpark enough that I think it's worth considering for some people.

the random encounter happening in the background is gold, really good joke even if it's not the type of joke I'd expect to see on a Magic card
