going through the songs one by one. I don't really understand French, but I dig both Voilà by Barbara Pravi and Tout l'univers by Gjon's Tears. I also like Last Dance by Stefania, and Daði Freyr's 10 Years. Not even halfway through >_> I'm now listening to Linkin Park Blind Channel...

I don't really follow it that closely, but I was a panellist on a Eurovision preview show like 6 years ago as a specialist in being uninformed. I have no idea where that video has disappeared to though. My wife says that we will watch if Belgium is in the finals, but knowing her she'll want to watch either way.

I own two albums by your Eurovision act! The upside is I love their work, the downside is that even though I like their Eurovision entry, I know they have songs that are much better.

I'm impressed you're working your way through them Onderz!

It's the first semi finals tonight, so you'll see if Belgium are through or not later. I'm not really a fan of their entry this year, doesn't do it for me, but Belgium have had some great songs in recent years.

I didn't know it was a thing before watching the movie last year. It's awesome :)

Interesting way to create a panel, reminds me of the idea to consider things both when sober and when drunk.

How was the experience?

Oh, a friend of mine works in the media but is also part of a Eurovision fan club. So they booked some studio space with a local university and used it as kind of a learning experience, with different students operating the camera rigs and whatnot.

It was hard to always contribute to the conversation because the people from their club can tell you which country did what song in any given year. Honestly I don't think I was very good in front of the camera. I know the point was for me to be a fish out of water but I don't know how much I contributed.

Here's a little marketing research exercise I'm doing for the fun* of it. If you were walking about the store one day, which of the below seed packet designs would be most eyed catching to you? Most likely to make you take a look and/or buy a packet? Why? Assume that you are in need of buying seeds and/or would have a reason to buy them.

*what can I say, I work in sales.

Wow. All of these look super old fashioned. Personally, when I'm shopping for seeds, I like to see a photograph of what I'm about to buy, not an artistic impression. The beets and zucchini (that's a courgette! :p ) packets are super boring though. So, none of these really appeal to me.

What about those two makes you like them? Both are photographs, so that part seems clear
Yep, they both feature photographs that show a nice impression of what will grow out of the seeds.

For the design on the left I like that it marries a traditional design with a crisp photograph. It's basically your old seed packet, but with a photograph instead of a painting, and with crisp text.
For the design on the right I like that it uses the full cover for a great photograph showing how the whole plant might look in your garden. I do think that the font used in the title bar is both a bit boring, and hard to read.

I agree with Onderzeeboot. This is the most common seed brand in Australia:

Has the photograph to see what you will get (not artist interpretation). Simple text that is easy to read.
There is probably a little too much solid colour down the bottom, but I would take this one over any of the art ones.
I would have to grab the American Meadows one that Onderzeeboot posted to look at the back to see info on it, at least the Fothergill's tells you basic information that you need on the front so you can scan the shelf for what you want.

Interesting. The front information is something that isn't very common on (retailed) seed packets in the US besides, interestingly, Burpee, which is one of the bigger seed packet names in the game here. It is nice for quick referencing/comparison besides just having a picture to compare.

You bring up an interesting related question: What kind of information do you like seeing on the back of packets? This is something I see a wide arc on depending on company.

10 pogchimps to Onder and Kirb for humoring me

I want to know...

  • when to sow the seeds (just repeat that information that should already be on the front)
  • how deep and far apart to sow the seeds (basically sowing instructions)
  • whether I to sow directly into garden soil, or to sow in a greenhouse / pot
  • how long it will take for the seeds to flower
  • harvest time (for vegetable seeds)
  • whether the plant wants to grow in sunlight, shade, or half-shade
  • whether the plant is annual, biennial, or perennial
  • what the dimensions of the plant are going to be (height and width)
  • whether the plant attracts insects; bees, bumblebees, and butterflies in particular
