General Modern Masters 2015

So, the previews started in ernest, and while the average cube probably won't be interested in many of the rares, which are mostly either busted, modern reprints that are not interesting for cube, or limited crap that wouldn't make the average cube (Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder? Really???), Finkel just reviewed a very special card on the mothership, and I thought the article was pretty hilarious :D

Edit: Damn! They're reprinting my favorite creature!

I'm more interested to see what archetypes they bake into the set this time and whether we can borrow any ideas from their design. Sets like these aren't that far off from designing a low-to-medium power Modern-legal cube with lots of singleton breaking, and hopefully the set is less poison principle-y than last time so that we can actually pilfer some of their themes. No more dredge this time, please!

Well it's not off to a great start with Metalcraft and Eldrazi. Hopefully they make it work.

Eldrazi can overlap, metalcraft kinda can't.
Ah well, some archetype needs to be the worst.

It's so refreshing to see a limited format with bolt, 2 power 1 drops and stormblood berserker though.

Modern Masters is probably the closest to cube they can get in a retail draft format. There's still all of the "unplayable" stuff like Spellskite, Hurkyl's Recall, etc (well, stuff that I wouldn't put in my cube, let's put it that way).

Someone (who has actually seen them in action) needs to do a "Grillo loves splicers" post for elementals. I can say how cool they are in lorwyn draft but that doesn't tell us a ton about elementals in cube.

I had a half-assed Elemental subtheme in Eldrazi Domain, but I'm sure it could use an update.

Ditched my eldrazi temples and eyes of ugin today for 2 and 9 USD, respectively. Reprint-riddled spoiler season is "oh shit better sell these asap" season for me.

Keeping anything spoiled at mythic is probably a safe bet, but things that go from mythics to rares, or just super-popular rares (hierarch, fulminator) I'm a LOT less sure about.

Financial speculators pls

I wouldn't worry too much about the value of the popular expensive rares. Most of them dipped in value after the release of MM, but rebounded to a higher price level a few months after. I agree on the rarity downshifts and less popular rares though, those will most likely take a hit.

I fully expect Serum Visions to be reprinted at common or uncommon, see the value of my collection of Serum Visions dwindle, and not care because I acquired them when they were still cheap draft fodder (and because I don't speculate on Magic cards).

I honestly can't believe we haven't seen a reprint of Serum Visions before now, especially since we go a major retail set where Scry was a main theme. Is there a reason (flavor/thematically) that Serum Visions was unfit for Theros?

I am pretty sure it was flavour (American spelling be damned!) reasons. Since 'Serum' is a story plot point from the Mirrodin Block. Could have been from a developmental standpoint too, as mono blue devotion didn't need any help at that point in time.
It should be pretty funny to watch people hoard them in draft just because they are worth coin now, but this huge wave of supply has to knock them down to $1-2 if not less. Although I must say that Lava Spike and Rift Bolt held their value pretty well after MM1 (Still around $2 for each of those).

Should expect the Limited Information column tonight/today (whatever) to show us half of the draft archetypes (Like they did last time) which is what I am personally waiting for. Should we try and guess what they are?

WU - Metalcraft (Already Spoiled)
UB - Evasive Beats? (Shadowmage Infiltrator tempts me so)
BR - Bloodthirst Aggro (Already Spoiled)
RG - Eldrazi Ramp?
GW - Enchantress (Totem Armor in ROE makes me think this may be a thing)
BW - Control? (I really have no idea on this one)
BG - Tokens/Sacrifice (Already Spoiled)
GU - 5-Colour (MM1 already did this... This really is a hard archetype combination)
UR - Elementals (Already Spoiled)
RW - Allies Or Landfall (The general go to aggro plan)

Always good to see reprints of old art not available in foil
also: changeling works with thief of hope and shit. Sweet :D

I'm pissed about the Wildfire art. I want my dinosaur extinction art forever.

Is a dinosaur set really to much to ask for? When innistrad came out, it was during the horror popularity boom. Now we have had Pacific Rim, Godzilla, Jurassic World, Pixar's "the good dinosaur", and then there's the fact DINOSAURS ARE JUST COOL. So someone please explain why MAGICAL TUROK DINO-LAND HAS NOT COME?

MAKING OUR OWN GREEK GODS = OKAY.

MAKING A DINOSAUR SET = A JOKE.

WHAT LOGIC IS THIS?

Bad logic ;)

I didn't care for it when they made their own greek gods, and cared for it even less when they started adding their terrible "Iliad" flavor text to the cards.

The girl who would become the Champion of the Sun hacked furiously at the practice dummy. At last she stopped, breathing heavily, and looked up at her instructor.
"So much anger," said the centaur. "I will teach you the ways of war, child. But first you must make peace with yourself."

ugh. Not exactly homer.
