Kaldheim

Plane: Kaldheim

"The world was born from a seed, and that seed grew into the World Tree, and everything else grew from it. Its leaves were every color imaginable, and as its branches spread out, they became worlds themselves. And once there were ten strong branches, fruit grew on the branches, and those were the Cosmos monsters. The serpent was the firstborn, and he has been growing since before the beginning of time. — The First Saga"

Strixhaven: School of Mages

Plane: Arcavios

7A5D5A99-861B-4CE4-8E02-B3FC952A42B3.jpeg

Founded 700 years ago by five elder dragons, Strixhaven University draws promising young mages from all around the plane to study in its halls.
Strixhaven is divided into five colleges, each with its own campus, faculty, and magical specialties. They are Silverquill, Prismari, Witherbloom, Lorehold, and Quandrix.

The Biblioplex
The Library of Strixhaven, also known as The Biblioplex, forms the center of the university. Doorless, arch-shaped entrances welcome inquisitive minds into the library. Inside, almost every surface from floor to unreasonably high ceiling is jammed with stacks of books. The interior of the Biblioplex is vast, with impossibly long hallways, archive chambers tall enough to have their own weather, and even pools and moat-passages that must be crossed by boat.
Within the Biblioplex is the Mystical Archive, an impossibly large wing that is said to contain a copy of every spell ever created in the Multiverse. While mortal life is too fleeting to contest such a claim, it is clear that the Archive contains an uncountable number of powerful spells.
At the very center of the Biblioplex is the Hall of Oracles, an awe-inspiring chamber lined with monuments. The heart of the Hall is the Strixhaven Snarl, a massive, luminous tangle of pure mana that illuminates this chamber like a magical sun.

The rest of Arcavios
Most of the known plane is broken across two huge continents—the northern continent of Orrithia, commonly known as the Vastlands, and a mysterious southern continent, called Galathul. The two are linked by a land bridge called the Isthmus of Omens. Strixhaven University is situated in the northeast of Orrithia.

Arcavius.jpg

The plane of Arcavios is vast repleat with breathtaking vistas, dangerous wildlands, rugged mountainpasses and tranquil forests where mysterious floating stones known as Star Arches dot the landscape and where centuries of blood and dust have covered ruins of the ancient past. Arcavios is a beautifully unpredictible marriage of opposing colors of mana where contrasts are blended into complements during large part of the nature of the plane's birth. Ancient tales tell of the convergence of two seperate and distinct planes overlapping in a violent maelstrom that birthes Arcavious.

1636729963464.png

These stories are propagated by the enigmatic and ancient race of wandering avatarsknown as Archaics who date back to the convergence itself called The Dawning Age. Remnants of the overlap can still be found across the landscape of Arcavios. These snarls are knot entangles of two sources of raw conflicting colors of mana. This phenomenon is quite rare but the power of the snarls can be used to fuel magic and spells.

Innistrad: Midnight Hunt

Plane: Innistrad

Innistrad, Midnight Hunt.jpg
Innistrad is a plane of menace and dread where every creature hides a darker aspect. Humans dream of 'The Blessed Sleep' which is a normal death of old age but few get it. Most villagers become ghosts, vampires, werewolves or zombies after they're done hiding from the horrors of Innistrad.

Return to Innistrad
This is a return set, which means we have plenty of lore to read up upon from previous sets. This section will highlight the lore, locations and creatures of the first and second Innistrad block before we dig into Midnight Hunt.

A Planeswalker's Guide to Innistrad:
https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/savor-flavor/planeswalkers-guide-innistrad-2011-11-02

Explore Innistrad
https://magic.wizards.com/en/innistradmap

When the light fades and the moon rises over Innistrad, humanity becomes the universal prey. Packs of werewolves are drawn out by the moon, their humanity washed away by animal rage. Vampire families bare their fangs at the scent of human blood. Hordes of walking dead lurch across the manors and moors, driven by an innate hunger for the living. Alchemically created abominations twitch to life in alchemists' laboratories. Geists haunt the huddled human towns and terrify travelers along the dark crossways in between. From Innistrad's depths, powerful demons and impish devils plot humanity's downfall.

The humans of Innistrad have done their best to fight back. They form torch-wielding mobs to cleanse the abominations with fire. They train specialized holy warriors called cathars to strike back against the supernatural horrors. Most of all, they brandish the power of the Church of Avacyn. The Church is named for its leader, the powerful archangel Avacyn who was created by the Planeswalker Sorin Markov to safeguard humanity and allow them to coexist with their predators.

Provinces of Innistrad

Gavony - The heart of Gavony is Thraben, safe haven for those in need of healing and a respite from Innistrad's dark forces. The human residents here either work to ensure the safety of their village or join the Avacyn church to become cathars, who travel the providences protecting humanity from danger.

Kessig - The thick Ulvenwald Forest isolates these quaint villages from neighboring provinces. The Krallenhorde howlpack is ever present, though secret, and includes many of the town’s neighbors in its murderous ranks. Between the isolation and constant danger, most townsfolk here are wary of outsiders.

Stensia - In Stensia's higher altitude, the rocky soil rules out farming. Instead, humans become shepherds and raise large families. A superstitious people content to survive day to day, the Stensia mentally ignore the fact that every passageway out of Stensia is constantly monitored by the vampire families.

Nephalia - The coastal cities of Nephalia draw many merchants. They also attract ghoulcallers and skaberen, who practice their craft away from prying neighbors or the church. While not as populated as Thraben, Nephalia's cities are denser, filled with those who, for one reason or another, prefer anonymity.

Gavony.jpg
Gavony

Creatures of Innistrad

Spirits - Geists are spirits of those who have passed, yet cannot find peace in the Blessed Sleep. Some are guardians, but most remain out of malice, revenge, and regret. Able to exist as corporeal and incorporeal beings, geists will seek vengeance or wander until the Church of Avacyn guides them to rest.

Werewolves - Werewolves are created in moments of intense despair, when a human's soul becomes intertwined with the wild essence of nature after which, both sides are locked in a struggle for control. With the archangel Avacyn's release, werewolves have now become wolfir, permanent wolf protectors of humanity.

Vampires - Stensia is controlled by four major vampire families: Markov, Voldaren, Falkenrath, and Stromkirk. Though their abilities may differ, they all have enhanced strength, eternal youth, the ability to dampen noise, and prominent canines—often the last terrifying image seen by many an unwary traveler.

Skaabs - Unhallowed are zombies that ghoulcallers harvest from the many fengrafs, seagrafs, or diregrafs around Innistrad. Skaabs are twisted, pieced-together corpses that the skaberen have reanimated through necroalchemy. Both are vile desecrations of the Blessed Sleep expected by humans when they die.

Angels - When Avacyn returned, so did her angels, who had gone off searching for their leader. Flight Goldnight protects the churches and towns with wards; Flight Alabaster maintains the fighting force and trains the cathars; and Flight of Herons scours the land for danger or growing threats.

Demons - As joyous as Avacyn's release from the Helvault was, it also meant the release of every single twisted demon that Avacyn had ever trapped. Power may be returning to the Church of Avacyn, but old demons are planning new heights of vulgar depravity and carnage to unleash upon humanity.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

The first block,
Innistrad, Dark Ascension & Avacyn Restored

The events of the Innistrad block center on the events after the sundering of the Helvault, a giant silver metal object that was used by the archangel Avacyn to imprison Innistrad's worst horrors, the demons. It is then revealed why the archangel Avacyn vanished from the plane in the first place, leaving the humans of the plane defenseless against the gothic horrors of Innistrad.

The Helvault.png
The Helvault

In the early days of Avacyn's presence in Innistrad, the archangel sought to rid the plane of its demonic influences. Accompanied by her fellow angels, she challenged each demon she encountered to single combat, defeating and dispatching them one-by-one. However, the demons of Innistrad are composed of pure mana, their defeat only meant that their physical forms were shattered, their dark essence living on. Eventually the black mana would coalesce in another dark corner of the plane, and another demon would appear.

Avacyn soon noted that no matter how many times a demon was defeated, there would always be another one to take its place. All that its destruction would buy was temporary peace to the afflicted towns and villages. Thus, she took an oath, saying "What cannot be destroyed, must be bound". This oath is reflected in the symbol of the archangel herself, the Collar of Avacyn, shaped to bind any evil that would not be destroyed. With this new goal in mind, Avacyn used her divine magics to trap demons, one-by-one in the Helvault. She was so successful at doing this that after a time, only the plane's elder demons remained free of the Helvault's magical prison.

Avacyn's Collar.jpg
The Collar of Avacyn

It was then that the great demon Griselbrand decided to challenge Avacyn to single combat, boldly landing on the top of the Helvault itself. For many days the battle raged on between archangel and archdemon, watched only by the church's highest officials such as Mikaeus, the Lunarch and Avacyn's most powerful angelic compatriots

Seeing as she could not defeat Griselbrand, Avacyn used all her remaining power to cast a final binding spell to drive the archdemon into the Helvault and seal him away forever. However, at that moment, the demon revealed his endgame, to trap the archangel herself in her own prison. Using his spear, Griselbrand thrust the weapon through her, dealing her a mortal blow just as the binding spell was completed. The spell backfired, drawing in both angel and demon to the Helvault, with the ongoing spectators watching in horror as their beloved archangel was impaled, then imprisoned within the magical chunk of moonsilver.

Because of fears that reporting Avacyn's disappearance would incite mass hysteria and panic among the human denizens of the plane, Mikaeus and the other church officials decided to cover up any reports concerning the reason behind archangel's disappearance. Nevertheless, the archmages and clergy of the Church soon began to feel the aftereffects of the archangel's vanishing. Spells, wards and enchantments began to fail all over Innistrad. Prayers to the archangel went unanswered. Monsters and creatures of the night were no longer held at bay by Avacyn's holy might. Sensing weakness, Innistrad's werewolf howlpacks, vampire hordes and unstoppable waves of zombies began preying actively on the humans.

At the onset of these events in Innistrad, the Planeswalker Liliana Vess had come to the plane of Innistrad to reclaim her soul, which she had traded to four demons in exchange for beauty and power. She believes that by killing her dark debtors, her own bargain would be negated, and she wouldn't have to continue being subservient to these demons. During her earlier days of serving her demonic masters she eventually found and claimed a dark artifact known as The Chain Veil, which greatly amplified the potential of her dark magics. Liliana used the power of the Veil to kill one of her four demonic masters, Kothophed and she has tracked her next target, Griselbrand, to Innistrad.

During her search for the demon, Liliana was beset by the Planeswalker Garruk Wildspeaker, on whom she had used the Chain Veil to bestow a curse in a previous encounter. However, she managed to fend him off due to the dampening properties of the Veil's curse upon Garruk's nature magic. In the end, Garruk was overwhelmed by a small army of undead raised by Liliana and left for dead.

Upon reaching the great city of Thraben, Liliana uncovers a plot by two rival sibling necromancers to besiege the holy city, the blue-oriented Stitcher Geralf, and his black-oriented ghoulcaller sister Gisa. Despite the city receiving warning reports from cathars and inquisitors, not much was done to reinforce the city's walls and failing wards. Due to this lack of adequate preparation, the holy city was caught unawares by the massive army both siblings had amassed. In the end, only the quick thinking of the cathar Thalia spared the city from utter destruction. Thalia's plan was simple, to use the thatched straw roofs of Thraben's houses to create a ring of fire, burning down the entire army of undead. The plan was successful as most of the city was spared from the undead horde, albeit at the loss of many cathars and buildings because of the great fire.

Despite this successful defence, during the siege, Geralf infiltrated the heart of the city and slew Mikaeus, the lunarch himself. Not wanting the news to demoralise the already downcast human citizens of the plane, the other church officials buried the lunarch in secret. Liliana used this opportunity to raise Mikaeus from the dead and interrogate the corpse of Griselbrand's whereabouts, instead learning of the epic battle between Avacyn and her demonic master and their current entrapment in the Helvault.

Not possessing magic capable of sundering the great silver mass, Liliana approached the problem from a different angle. She reanimated a small army of ghouls and zombies and proceeded to attack the sanctuary where the Helvault resided. Now charged with protecting the Helvault at all costs, the newly appointed Guardian of Thraben, Thalia faced off Liliana with a squad of elite cathars backing her up. Catching them completely off guard, Liliana paralyzed the squad of cathars with a wave of dark magic and gave Thalia this ultimatum: sunder the Helvault, or watch her comrades fall to the undead army. It only took the strangled cry of a single cathar as he fell prey to the ghouls that Thalia pointed toward the Helvault and cursed Liliana.

With a great explosion, the silver prison that was the Helvault shattered, releasing demons and archangel alike. No one noticed the ribbons of black mana streaking away from the shattered remains. All eyes were fixed upon the golden helix streaking out into the sky. Avacyn had returned to the plane. When the Helvault shattered, Avacyn emerged at her full strength. Her presence reinfused the Avacynian protective wards with holy magic once again. Her angelic host was restored to its full powers, which gave the humans the chance to gain the upper hand in their fight against evil. The three flights of angels reformed in greater numbers than before. Once again, they became Avacyn's soldiers on the front lines of battle. Only this time, instead of barely containing the monsters of the world, the angels and their human allies began pushing them back, away from the bastions of human civilization. For the first time, they were winning.

Now that Griselbrand was also freed from the Helvault, Liliana continues her search for the demon, and her release from the fell contract she entered into.

Meanwhile, the plane's horrors continued to be driven back by the renewed power of the Church. In the process of purging the town of Gatstaf from the threat of werewolf howlpacks, the villagers appealed to Avacyn to remove the curse of lycanthropy upon their loved ones, whom they could not bear to see put to death because of a curse they could not control. Although she could not undo the werewolf curse, she revealed that she would instead transform those afflicted by the curse (but loyal to her and the Church), fusing the warring aspects of human and wolf into a single creature; the "wolfir". In a powerful wave of spells that would become known as the Cursemute, Avacyn's magic reverberated throughout the plane, transforming not just many werewolves but undoing many of the world's foul curses. The wolfir emerged as a new race of great wolf-creatures dedicated to the principles of the Church of Avacyn.

The Cursemute had an unintended impact on a visitor to the plane: Garruk Wildspeaker. At the moment the Cursemute swept across the land, Garruk was knee-deep in swamp muck surrounded by the severed limbs of Liliana's ghouls. He had barely managed to defeat them, and burdened by the Veil's curse, was slowly descending into madness. Close to death and tormented by pain and fury, Garruk's mind slipped away from him. He wandered in blind circles, shouting at the ravens and imagined monsters. It might have been the end of the great hunter, but for the events unfolding in Gatstaf Spring.

When Avacyn's thaumaturgy reached him, Garruk regained his senses. He stared down at his arms, watching the black veins receding from his skin. He was overcome with joy at the sudden absence of pain and sickness. But the relief was short-lived. Within seconds the veins reappeared, his blood seemed to thicken to tar, and his back bent under the weight of the Veil's curse once again. The Cursemute was enough to bring him back from madness and death, but it was not enough to cure him.

After slogging his way out of the swamp, he came upon Angel's Way, a well-traveled road between Kessig and Thraben. He knew Liliana was heading to Thraben, and he could doggedly continue his pursuit. Or he could strike out another way, toward the origin of the magic he had felt so strongly. There was a power on this plane that could cure curses. Maybe there was another way to rid him of his evil burden—a way that didn't involve the death-witch.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

The second block,
Shadows over Innistrad & Eldritch Moon

Madness swept over Innistrad as the fleeting hope of Avacyn's angelic protection turned to horror. Sorin Markov finally intervened, unmaking his beloved creation. But with Avacyn's unmaking, the last protections over the plane fell as well, opening it to new otherworldly intruders. The denizens of Innistrad are beset on all sides. Their faith in the archangel Avacyn brought them strength when fighting against demons, werewolves, vampires, and all manners of horrors. But, now the mighty protector of the plane has been twisted into something monstrous by an outside influence. A strange force has stepped into the gothic world, and its corrupting tendrils now touch everything. Something strange is going on.

The Titan of Corruption and Warper of Biology twists all things living, be it plants, animals, or sentient beings, into Eldrazi Horrors. Mutations frequently gain Emrakul's fibrous lattice motif, often including tentacles, extra eyes and limbs and her bizarre colorations. The mutations include five increasing levels of corruption: distorted, disfigured, deformed, misshapen and monstrous. Some of the affected creatures meld together into new organisms. The few unaffected survivors, humans and native monsters alike, fight a losing battle against their mentally and physically twisted former peers. Now Innistrad's fate rests in the hands of unlikely allies: Jace Beleren brings the Gatewatch, and Liliana brings hordes of undead immune to Emrakul's influence.

"Together they watch the first sunrise over Innistrad in months. It is the same as every other sunrise—but therein lies the beauty. Every single sunrise is a gift. It is something that defies expectation, something that almost defies belief: every morning a golden ball of fire crests the horizon, and that act alone is enough to bring light to the world."

Strixhaven: School of Mages

Plane: Arcavios

View attachment 3675

View attachment 5703

These stories are propagated by the enigmatic and ancient race of wandering avatarsknown as Archaics who date back to the convergence itself called The Dawning Age. Remnants of the overlap can still be found across the landscape of Arcavios. These snarls are knot entangles of two sources of raw conflicting colors of mana. This phenomenon is quite rare but the power of the snarls can be used to fuel magic and spells.

Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty

Plane: Kamigawa

Kamigawa means "River of the Gods"

Kamigawa is a land of mystery and danger. A far flung plane few travel to and even fewer understand. It's a world clouded in superstition divided into two realms fighting for harmony... or supremacy.

The Kami War

The plane of Kamigawa
https://magic.wizards.com/en/story/planes/kamigawa

The Old Kamigawa
This is a return set, which means we have plenty of lore to read up upon from previous sets. This section will highlight the lore, locations, the kami (minor gods or spirits), the samurai and the ninjas of the first Kamigawa block before we dig into Neon Dynasty.

The original Kamigwaa block (Champions of Kamigawa, Betrayers of Kamigawa, Saviors of Kamigawa) was the first block ever to declared a top-down block. A top-down block is when they create lore and world building first and afterwards design the mechanics to fit into that world. This is noticable in the stories of Kamigawa.

The world of Kamigawa, positioned far from any other world we know, is governed by the interplay between the mortals and the kami, minor gods or spirits of the world. The Kakuriyo or Reikai is the spirit world where the kami dwell: its other half is that of the Utsushiyo where mortals live. Together they form a sphere that makes the whole of the world.

To recap what happened on Kamigawa we have to go back 1200 years. For many hundreds of years, Kamigawa's denizens peacefully worshipped the spirits of their world. Then suddenly their gods attacked, forcing the world into brutal war.

Kamigawa contains two symbiotic worlds: the utsushiyo, or material realm, and the kakuriyo, or kami spirit realm. Each kami was a divinity, and the way to happiness was to honor these gods and live by their ways. The inhabitants of Kamigawa were content with this life of devotion. Then the unimaginable happened. Their gods turned on them.

To understand why we must first turn to Dominaria for a brief moment. Prior to the Mending there were eight major rifts in existence and several smaller ones. Each of the major rifts was caused by some catastrophe, and in almost every case a planeswalker was involved. These rifts caused cascading rifts accross the multiverse and one particular affected Kamigawa. On Kamigawa the veil between the Utsushiyo and Kakuriyo weakened.

Slowly at first, the kami began to take form in the material world. Some scholars believed they were delivering a message or a warning. But their appearance was so alien and surreal, no true meaning could be discerned. Meanwhile, the plane's most powerful warlord, the daimyo Takeshi Konda, ruled over the Towabara Plains from his stronghold at Eiganjo. Even as his armies and samurai secured more territory in Konda's name, the kami manifested in ever greater numbers.

Then came the night that changed Kamigawa forever. A few miles from Eiganjo Castle, the kami set upon the town of Reito. Scores of spirit-world monstrosities swept through the town, killing nearly every living thing. Hundreds were slain and few survived. The Kami War had begun. Over the next twenty years, spirits of every shape and size would descend on the plains, ravaging everything in their path.

Throughout this siege, Konda remained within his stronghold, mysteriously safe from harm.

Kamigawa's people wondered why the kami betrayed them, even as they fought for survival. What had they done wrong? In truth, it was the proud daimyo Konda who had begun the war. With aid from moonfolk allies, Konda kidnapped a kami to secure his own power and immortality. This outraged the great O-Kagachi, kami of all things, igniting an ire that would claim countless lives. Only Konda's daughter Michiko and a stolen kami (an entity who calls herself Kyodai) have any hope of placating the kami and restoring a fragile peace to the land.

Neon Dynasty

A Planeswalker's Guide to Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty:
https://magic.wizards.com/en/articl...alkers-guide-kamigawa-neon-dynasty-2022-02-03

More than 1,200 years after the events of the Kamigawa block, the two realms of Kamigawa are merging and one day they will exist as one. Some wonder about what's beyond the merge gates, or how denizens of both realms will be affected when the merge is complete.

Utsoshiyo has transformed into a futuristic world of cyberpunk ninjas and samurais, where tradition and modernity meet. The kami feel threatened by the growth of the modern city of Towashi. Many have fled to the remains of the Jukai forest, and are hostile to humans. For this reason, Eiganjo trained many kami diplomats to try to keep the peace between the mortals and spirit realms.

The Imperials are still the main power in Kamigawa. The Kamigawans have discovered electricity, experience an industrial revolutiona and have entered a computerized era. The Kami have adapted to the electricity, some of them taking on industrial-style bodies.

The emperor has gone missing since a metal-armed man was seen in the temple of Kyodai.

Streets of New Capenna

"Family Means Business"

Plane: Unknown
The plane is largely known by the same name as its only major settlement, the metropolis of New Capenna, as the rest of the plane was devastated by invading Phyrexians and is largely uninhabited. Its original name has been forgotten.

Streets of New Capenna trailer

A Planeswalker's Guide to Streets of New Capenna
https://magic.wizards.com/en/articl...swalkers-guide-streets-new-capenna-2022-04-28

1650717325158.png

Old Capenna
The city of New Capenna is centuries old (at least older than the Phyrexian invasion of Dominaria). Its inhabitants have little memory of its past, perhaps because the demons didn't want people to remember it, or because people simply forgot the details over generations after fleeing from a forgotten invader who is said to have had an inexhaustible army. During a war against that long-forgotten enemy, the defenders of the plane had their citizens flee to a tower newly built they named New Capenna. That tower became a fortress. The fortress became a city that grew into gigantic metropolis. However Old Capenna still exists as a lost civilization beneath New Capenna. Walls have long since fallen, slumped into a pile of rubble. A girder of the upper city splits an ancient castle in two. Old Capenna can be reached via "weak spots" such as hidden tunnels, ladders, gaps in the structure.

Kingdom Era
Several centuries before the modern day, New Capenna was a plane of chivalry, castles and fantastic beasts, similar to Alara's Bant. The predecessors to the five families served in different roles. The Maestros served as the plane's nobles and art aficionados. The Riveteers made up its artisans, blacksmiths, edificers, and architects. The Cabaretti made up a popular druidic faith. The Obscura served as mystics, wizards, and advisers to the plane's Angels. The Brokers were paladins.

New Capenna
After the Phyrexians attacked, the plane's situation became dire. An unlikely deal between archangels and demonlords created the metropolis of New Capenna. The angels had become consumed with the defense of the plane, and it had become clear that the demons needed to join the fray as well. When they did, the archdemons appointed five families to rule the city in their name, drafting a contract with the head of each family and conferring demon status to each signatory.

The angels are said to have built the city, but after its completion the demons betrayed the angels, trapping them in a kind of stasis from which they could convert the angels' bodies into Halo. The Demon Lords used Halo to defeat the Phyrexians and then disappeared themselves.

Denizens from the rest of the plane migrated to the city in two exoduses before the Riveteers tightened up immigration.

Although no new angels had been created since the city's founding, after Giada, the city's last free angel, sacrificed herself during the Adversary War, the plane's angels awoke from stasis and returned to the plane

New Capenna today – The five families
New Capenna is now ruled by five major crime families. At the head of each of the five families is a demon leader. The five families of New Capenna are The Maestros, The Obscura, The Cabaretti, The Riveteers and The Brokers.

1650740155194.png
1650740353025.png

The Maestros {U}{B}{R}
The Maestros – Elite Assassins – are old-money vampires who love the finer things in life—and are willing to kill to get them. They maintain a public front as an upstanding organization of art aficionados with a goal of preserving the art and culture of Old Capenna. Beneath this polished veneer, they are a shadowy organization of elite assassins focused on maintaining power, influence, and wealth.

Introducing their vampire demon leader
Lord Xander, the head of the Maestros, would think himself first among equals if any equals presented themselves to him. Until that happens, he reigns as the self-appointed curator of New Capenna's history and orchestrator of its present. History he stages through exhibitions in the Maestros's many galleries, museums, and archives. The present he orchestrates through the Maestros's skilled, discreet assassins for hire.

Lord Xander is burdened by three gifts: vampirism, which grants him all but eternal life; a demonic blessing, which grants him power; and a crown, whose weight he cannot feel now that noble titles mean nothing. Taken together, Lord Xander bears the mantle of the collector and curator of New Capenna. Curation is exhausting work, a labor that has increasingly begun to remind him of his old life before the city rose and the age of knights, lords, and monsters fell behind. He was an artist once. With the approach of the Crescendo—the citywide year-end celebration—Lord Xander plots once more a great work to resonate throughout the city.

The Obscura {W}{U}{B}
The Obscura – Gifted Magicians – are talented wizards and mystics who use their power to deceive and blackmail. Using distractions, illusions, and hidden mechanisms, they orchestrate scenarios and manipulate outcomes to their benefit. They endeavor to maintain a facade of normalcy in their everyday lives, which allows them to run their schemes without disruption.

Introducing their sphinx demon leader
The sphinxes of Old Capenna were never many. Territorial and vain, they competed over public acclaim, fear, and devotion, crafting prophetic forecasts to drive the masses to their temples. As a young sphinx, Raffine could count on half a paw the number of her own kind she knew personally: her mother, who cast her out when she could fly; her rival, whose augury contradicted her own as much as Raffine's did hers; and her lover, whose name and face Raffine can no longer remember.

That changed when they came. Raffine's prophecies—which no one wanted to hear, because they were dark and grim and spoke of a shining metal end—were correct. She alone was raised up, granted demonic investiture by an archdemon, and now in New Capenna's art deco grandeur, Raffine is one of the only sphinxes that remains. Good. She likes it that way. Let her "family" serve her, let them inscribe her dreams in ink as they feed her theirs. Let her prophecy dictate the future of the city. At least this time they might listen when she says another end is coming—she dreams of nothing else . . .

The Cabaretti {R}{G}{W}
The Cabaretti – Party Monsters – are a fun-loving cult of druids who throw the hottest parties in town. They are the glitterati of the city, and everyone wants to be invited to their feasts and dance halls. They use ancient magic to sway the opinion of the masses and keep the Halo flowing. The party never ends if you keep paying, but the moment you stop, you might find it hard to leave.

Introducing their cat demon leader
The emcee of New Capenna is more than a warm heart and an expensive suit—he's the living spirit of New Capenna, the one-demon dynamo around which the elite orbit and turn to like the sun. There would be no scene without Jetmir. Without his coin, his approval, and his Halo, New Capenna is just a tower in an empty world. People gotta live, not just survive; Jetmir learned that early on. Now, it's his life's work to make sure that people live in his version of New Capenna.

Jetmir is the founder and boss of the Cabaretti, one of New Capenna's five families. In ages past, he led a sect of leonin druids. In Old Capenna, they were masters of ritual and rite, cultists of the natural world—its bounty, beauty, and the cycles that move because of and within all things. Life, death, rebirth, and life eternal, Jetmir's cult carried within them the spirit of the family that would become the Cabaretti before the first migration to New Capenna. He and his order kept the early settlers entertained, kept their spirits up, and in turn, they kept them fed and warm. This relationship, though far removed from how it began, is essentially the same now. Jetmir keeps the Halo flowing, the music playing, and the dance floor burning, and New Capenna loves him for it.

The Riveteers {B}{R}{G}
The Riveteers – Destruction Workers – are tough-as-nails artisans who can break buildings as easily as kneecaps. They're a rowdy, brute-force crime faction whose skills in industry and construction also make them pros at demolition and intimidation. As skilled artisans, they've transformed the lower levels of the city into a lair worthy of their draconic leader.

Introducing their demon dragon leader
The other dragons called her many things: a fool, a traitor to dragonkind, too vain even for them. Ziatora, the head of the Riveteers, heard it all from her kin when she first agreed to the archdemon's contract. But where are the other dragons now? For all their righteousness, their gloating and purity, the great dragons of Old Capenna are dust. The mighty guardians of dragonkind reduced to skulls and teeth, polished and shining under the lights of the Museum of Old Capenna, while Ziatora rules the Caldaia.

Now, Ziatora is power. Ziatora is wealth. Ziatora is the Incinerator, the champion of the working creatures of the Caldaia and the engineer of New Capenna. The archdemons and their angelic patsies may have sunk the first foundation columns and laid the great girders, but it was Ziatora and her laborers who built the city out of scaffolding. As well it is Ziatora now who sits atop the greatest treasure of the five families: New Capenna's single largest store of Halo is under the Riveteer's control. In an age where this precious resource is dwindling as demand for it increases, to command the flow of Halo is to dictate the fate of the city; should this monopoly be challenged, it would mean war.

The Brokers {G}{W}{U}
The Brokers – Demonic Lawyers – are a demonic law firm that secretly believes a doomsday prophecy—when the Halo dries up, New Capenna will fall. They maintain public law offices where they handle mundane legal matters like property disputes and physical grievances, but their aggressive solicitors have a dubious reputation for being everywhere and showing up at every crisis within the city.

Introducing their bird demon leader
New Capenna's foundation lies shrouded in mystery, a fog produced of time, passing generations, and magic. Few beings have clear memory of the city's beginning, but first among that exclusive group is the head of the Brokers: Falco Spara

Raised from mortality to deamonhood during New Capenna's founding days, Falco Spara is a rigorous, exacting mind. Falco has built his Brokers to become New Capenna's professional protectors of the highest order. Their pacts and contracts are binding—sometimes literally—providing their signees with protection in exchange for a debt, to be claimed at a later date. To those in need of even more protection, Falco has trained his Brokers in shielding magics, offering them as personal bodyguards and protectors to anyone in New Capenna who can afford it.

Falco was on top of the world, a lord of Park Heights. Each of the other four families relied on his Brokers for protection, as well as much of the city's civic and social elite. And then the Adversary came, and Falco discovered how far the fall is from the top of the world.

1650717428448.png
Halo – The magical sustenance that rules the criminal underworld of New Capenna. It has many benefits and can appear in a variety of forms, such as crystals, liquids and vapors. It is said to be have been made from the body of angels.
