Phinneas' Modern Cube

My fellow Otarians,

Check out my 360 Modern Legal Cube...found here.

Design Principles
  • Modern Legal
  • Singleton
  • Two-Colour Focus
Pruning and trimming the cube is an ongoing process, and the sideboard has evolved considerably as a result. I try to experiment with a mixture of classic archetypes for a given colour pairing, and some more unconventional or unexpected archetypes.
My next sub-project is to see if I can create expansion packs that would replace certain cards in the 360 list. I've been checking out other cube designers modular approaches and am interested in tinkering with the idea of a 'Format Draft'. Where each player publicly selects a 15 card expansion and adds it to the drafting pool prior to shuffling and pack creation.
This would obviously break a number of the colour balancing and curve smoothing approaches that are consistent with finely tuned cubes, but I think that it's possible to create a core list of 240 cards across all colours that would make the basic mechanics of each colour still shine through.
I'll post updates of this process as I go along.

Nice cube, I think the archetypes are well executed (labeling really helps as you did) and are pretty clear while drafting. I think it could use a little bit more mana fixing, even though you already mentioned the 2 color focus, either by adding lands or mana rocks but the fixing that is there is high quality.

I took the liberty of doing a quick draft of the cube. P1p1 was Ugin, the spirit dragon but he actually never ended up in the deck. The boros tempo deck is really strong, with a lot of burst potential and I got to draft a very high number of playables. The power level of the cube is in a pretty good spot I think, although I'm not an expert in high(er) power cubes. Here's the deck:

Thanks for the feedback! I've been tinkering with the mana-fixing section over the last year. Figuring out some combination of mana rocks, dual lands and the like. I'm trying out this current iteration to support a Wildfire/Destructive Force archetype. Thus the signets being in red, as opposed to the more conventional control colours.

If you have time, give it another couple drafts and let me know what you think.

I've done a few drafts (made an Esper Control, Izzet spells matter and Boros mix deck) and I feel the powerlevel is really nice. I've had a lot of playable cards come around from pick 1 to pick 15 in almost all packs. As I mentioned before, I feel there should be a bit more fixing. Not sure what the best way is, more lands or mana rocks, although I've seen exactly 0 mana rocks come by in my colors. I've not played black that much yet, and I'm not sure if you support mono black devotion or not but there were some cards with very heavy mana requirements (1BBB for instance), which is really something you want to look out for. Those will almost never be played in 2-color deck unless the archetype synergy is even more rewarding.

Edit: I know this is no draft exchange, but feel free to draft my low power cube as well. It's had a big update again now, as well as more SOI inclusions, and I'm not sure which direction I should go with it. Greatly appreciated!
