General (SOS) Secrets of Strixhaven

There are some pretty good spoilers so far today, but I just want to post one right now:

They did not need to make this man this absolutely ripped, but I appreciate that they did. The ability is also pretty cool, but I just got distracted by this man being a refrigerator.

EDIT: Alex, I'll take "cube staple" for $200.

Very nice little card for the increasingly popular Loot/Draw X theme

Such an unbelievably cool card. Makes the gears turn with joy the moment you see it.

I like it. I am a big Pelt Collector fan and maybe should still play it as my one true aggro-focused 1-drop in the color considering all the tokens, but I play Pawpatch Recruit right now for its more explicit token support and...maybe I make that switch back, actually, just to avoid token creep. I think I still like Pelt Collector more but there's a time and a place for either.

These are going to be so annoying in retail limited, especially sealed. Not really looking forward to it, to be honest.

Summoned Dromedary
Today in "show this card to a medieval peasant mid 2000s player" is this incredible card. Chronosavant is turning over in his grave (though not enough to make him come back to the battlefield). I love this kind of effect and am happy to see it on a white card, I feel like there are plenty of Cube projects that may be interested in an endlessly recurring dromedary.

Mica, Reader of Ruins
A little too EDH-coded, but honestly a pretty solid card for mid-powered environments, especially with all the trinkets we have running around these days.

Flow State
Love the name. I think it's super playable and cool and I will be trying to force it in, but I'm a little annoyed it doesn't actually "draw" any cards to work with things like the above Fractal Anomoly / Proft's Eidetic Memory / Astrologian's Planisphere / Mischievous Mystic which. may be enough to kill its chances.

EDIT: it needs both an instant and a sorcery, whoops. Much less interested in this now.

Aziza, Mage Tower Captain

I like it a lot, but I won't run it. Kirol, Attentive First-Year is great, but I ended up not keeping it in long. It only requires a single additional creature to go off on, and honestly, it's easier to plan around triggered effects than instants and sorceries I think.

Practiced Offense
Yeah, this is pretty OK. The flashback is really what sells it for me, especially since I'm increasingly eager to find white cards that are happy to get milled or discarded.

By the way, I dislike the art in this set. The hyper-shiny CGI look mixed with "too much" character designs remind me of the worst excesses of things like League of Legends / Concord etc.

I dunno, having an instant and a sorcery in your yard feels like an appropriate amount of set-up for what is effectively a better Expressive Iteration. I have a hard time imagining that a deck that wants to run an impulse would have much trouble getting this active by T4 - heck, if you break singleton the sad impulse you fire off on T2/T3 to grab a land helps set up the cool impulse later!

It's not the absolute strongest card for that spot, but it's certainly going to be less... temperamental... than See the Truth.

I don't think it's a bad card or anything, I'd just rather enjoy my Chart a Course. Honestly, I'd rather have See the Truth as well, that's a very cool card that came out during the worst time for testing in paper and I don't even remember if I picked up a copy.

Even if your deck has a ton of both instants and sorceries, it's hard to have a situation where you've already played at least one of each, haven't delved your graveyard for a flying whale or a cruise of treasures, haven't been on the bad end of a trespasser of graveyards or the like, and feel great about a pay-2-draw-2 sorcery. You know what, I'd really prefer Dreams of Laguna or Perilous Research over Flow State as cheap card draw that's better mid-to-late game, I think.

EDIT: some cool new cards

Why am I so drawn to this? Please help me, I really want to run this card, but I don't know how I can reasonably justify it in my environment.

Jadzi, Steward of Fate
I love Kiora, the Rising Tide. But this is probably better, and I love the idea of a wizard with a spell attached, even if the spell makes zero sense in mono-blue. Actually, that's my issue with the card -- it feels off. I don't think I'll be shaping out Kiora just yet.

Slumbering Trudge
This feels like old-fashioned Magic design, and I mean that as the best kind of compliment I know how to make.

Nah, clearly there's going to be gold cards that look like:

Quandrix Unsnarler - {G}{U}
Creature - Merfolk Wizard
For each {G} or {U} in a cost, you may pay {G/U} rather than pay that mana.
What do you think the color pie tastes like?
2/2

Kiora is nice and clean, and cares about the graveyard as much as I do, but Jadzi is a Human + Wizard + I care about <=2 power and tokens more than I should. I love the Steamcore Scholars and Champions of Wits of the world too. It's nice having options!

Thoughts on this in mid-high power?

It's bad Explore meets At Least Urban Evolution meets Genesis Hydra. I like it as a ramper plus ramp payoff, but I can't tell if the flexibility is worth the variety of slightly subpar options.

It feels kinda below rate unless you're putting 0 or a ton of mana into it. I'd probably be more excited with the flexibility if it was at instant speed.

Wild Thicket Archaic - {2/G}{2/G}
Creature - Avatar
Reach, Trample
Converge - This creature enters the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it for each different color of mana paid to cast it.
Whenever you cast a creature spell, that creature enters the battlefield with an additional X +1/+1 counters, where X is equal to the number of different colors of mana you paid to cast it.
0/0

I find it weirdly annoying that you can't cast it as a 2/2.
