Lady Octopus, AEther Vialer

I read a wiki page, but that seems beside the point.

In my opinion they are iconic. They shaped the entire universe. They Marvel’s version of the forces that created everything. They either came before the Big Bang or right after.

Another thing is that they are not just some throw away idea in a fantasy setting like we see with many Magic sets like Ixalan’s sun inside the planet’s core or smth like that. No the stories keep coming back to the six infinity gems or stones.

I would put them a tier below The One Ring in terms of iconic and importance. Probably on par with Urza, Bolas, Phyrexia and The Eldrazi. They are on par with Krypton and Superman’s Fortress imo. They are for sure above Harry Potter The Elder Wand.

All this is my opinion. I think you can find hundreds of stories with the infinity stones counting all media.

looks like a trap, and one that my drafters will fall into

...will test

I love being singleton (with my one exception) and I have a big Cube. So I'll take a 4th Terramorphic Expanse. I wonder how many of these I'd run? Probably 7, so 1 in 100 cards?

I think this is really good. Way too much Spider-Man flavor, but I like both the base price and the web-slinging is seriously sweet here.

The thing is that I like Imposing Sovereign (mostly due to nostalgia) and don't care one whit about Spider-Woman. Who the fuck is this lady? What's a "venom blast", and why is it represented by tapping stuff down as it comes into play?

It'd be great if there was anything to tie that together thematically, but I guess if I knew I'd be afraid of the card. Thanks for telling me that much, flavortext!

I hate it that blue now gets a 2/2 flier with massive upside for it's {1}{U}. Call me a magic boomer, but I think magic was more fun when not all colors would get super efficient creatures at all points of the curve.

- Easier to cast because of hybrid.
- Better stats because 2 toughness.
- Better abilities because of flying.
- Better abilities because of “artifacts”.
- Better creature types because of Spider Hero.

- No comparable downsides from a mechanical perspective.

It outdid I’ll Quench Ya!!

I currently run Asmo, but this seems very comparable. No food shenanigans, but at least you can cast it as a floor and it serves as a discard outlet too.

This and Spider Woman are going to be tempting.

Common-Crook-SPM-265.jpg

This is human, unlike Dire City Underrat, and it's got two toughness and is a party member while still being an outlaw, unlike Dire Fleet Hoarder. A lot of words for not a lot of actually strictly better, but I thought it was interesting! Hoarder still has a home for the Admiral Beckett Brass lovers of the world - which isn't me but I do respect her style - but, in general, better.

Rhinos-Rampage-SPM-265.jpg

I think I like this saying "3 or less" more than "the amount of excess damage dealt". Either way, it's interesting - a little sad it says "noncreature", honestly, I assume the Rhino would smash up a Mechanical Mobster... but it's interesting!

Heroes-Hangout-SPM-265.jpg

A red Sleight of Hand! With other upside! If nobody else, I bet @MilesOfficial will love this. And probably me. I'm a fan now, but we'll see if that sticks when I play with it versus something like Opera Love Song

School-Daze-SPM-265.jpg

For the one person playing Jace's Ingenuity, I think you should upgrade.

Heroes' Hangout is my pick for card of the set so far, without the full spoiler. But we're getting that in a few days, so we'll see.

oh, forgot this guy:
moltenmanincarnationofhellfire.jpg

Molten Man, Incarnation of Hellfire
2R
Legendary Creature - Elemental Villain [uncommon]
When this enters the battlefield, search your library for a basic Mountain card and put it onto the battlefield tapped. Then shuffle your library.
This creature gets +1/+1 for each Mountain you control.
When this leaves the battlefield, sacrifice a land.
0/0
I love Alpine Guides in theory, though I've never found one at the high power level I want. This is not that one either, but I think between this and Zell Dincht it's nice that they're doing more monored lands-matter stuff lately.

You couldn't be more right, maybe my favorite card of the set so far. I really like how you get until the end of your next turn, so it really does compare reasonably well with Opera Love Song (but I will be playing both for sure).

The Patrol Night ability might only be used 10-20% of the time, but it's pretty fairly costed, and makes blocking a huge pain for your opponent. Just a ton of flexibility here for one mana.

Cheering Crowd.png

This is a crazy design. Is it good? Kind of?? Maybe?? I like the opponent only getting 1 mana if they do it first.

Common legends are...interesting. This one having both Flash and Mayhem is almost compelling, I just wish I got more than a Wind Drake for 1 mana with the Mayhem. Reminds me of a slightly worse Bone Picker, a card I really like but never sticks in my Cube longer than a draft or two.

Rhino's Rampage is a potential hybrid 1 mana 2-for-1. Seems really good.

Cheering Crowd is attacking as a Watchwolf turn 3 that's ~4x easier to cast and adds mana.

Mayhem looks fun. Might take another look at Blood tokens.

I liked Talon Gates of Madara for being a land able to ramp into itself but found the card too narrow. This lets you do the same thing for just two mana, and returning a creature to your hand is often going to feel like an upside rather than otherwise. The fact that the card needs to be tapped is rough considering it's a sorcery, but I'm sure this will work just fine.

Again, aesthetics are driving me crazy but I'm here for the mechanics right now.

oscorpindustries.jpg

Was a big fan of Madlands from the Mystery Boosters and this is just better (and has colored art! players were a little grumpy about those cards, especially the event ones without any art at all). I'm very happy with a few novel tri-color cards to add in.

secretidentity.jpg

I appreciate the Unmask callback (apparently rk post said this came from a commission for a straight Unmask reprint intended for this set at some point?) and I like how Conceal/Reveal rhyme. Kind of a shame it can't make your opponent's creature a 1/1 with irrelevant hexproof. I do like a good Wild Shape, so it's definitely something I'll play in retail Limited.

If you could change your opponents' dudes, I'd certainly be playing the card!

Looks like they've spoiled all the rares/mythics and there's only 4 cards left. It really does feel like a small set, but I seem to have a surprisingly large amount of cards I'm interested in, which is annoying because I'll need to either fire up the printers or deal with an IP that annoys me personally. Still, lots of cool designs.

@TrainmasterGT, will you do the honors of the testing thread?

This one is (probably correctly) not getting a ton of talk, but between this and Cut Propulsion from Edge, we're getting closer and closer to my favorite removal spell:
018 - Overwhelming Guilt.jpg
At this point we've got more red versions of this effect than white ones, but I really love the specific breakdown of what this can and can't kill, and extol its virtues every chance I get.

Red has less of a gap of "removal that isn't an enchantment and deals with most things with some weird gaps" because burn exists, but new gaps is interesting, and something like this might be a more interesting way to give red some tools to deal with shit like siege rhino (okay bad example) without just making bigger number with something like Roast

The-Spots-Portal-SPM-672.jpg

Also I'm gonna say it here too: don't fall for the propaganda, this isn't a color pie break for the same reason "put target creature on top, then mill 1" IS. It's about what you're doing, not how you're doing it.

You're killing a creature. It doesn't matter which color usually puts some other X on the bottom of the library, this is taking a creature in play, and putting it in a completely non-relevant zone. It's vaguely notable in that I don't think we have 3 mana "exile target creature" in black, which this is almost the same as.

Repentance getting a glow-up, I see!

On a similar note, I kinda wish that they gave White non-pariah damage redirection more often. Harm's Way is a cool card, and I'd be intrigued to see what a modern version of Zhalfirin Crusader or Aegis of Honor would look like. It's still more-or-less in White's pie slice, unlike something like Martyr's Cry or Surprise Deployment.

...

Oh, right, Spiderman. A lot of the cards that no-one has brought up yet are kinda meh, but there is also

Maga, Traitor to Mortals and Vampire Sovereign hit it off and had a son, apparently. Shame about the awkward nickname he picked up when he was a kid.

(In all seriousness, this seems like it'd be a nightmare for aggro in a weaker environment. What a neat and clean design.)

This spoiler season was kinda painful. They used some cool mechanics, especially new-madness and hybrids, for this set, but boy I feel bad looking at these cards.

I am really, really, REALLY not into super heros. I never understood why they were wearing cheesy, skin-tight costumes instead of some actual undercover outfits. And the villains aren't better. I mean look at Electro's Bolt ... wtf, what gangster could ever be taken seriously with a lithtning-shaped mask designed by a four-year old?

Additionally, I think worlds like these are the worst fit for MtG, as they are so close to real world. I don't mind variation from knights and dragons, like Sci-Fi or such, but damn I hate seing cards like "rent is due" ... what's next? I cast "Write your tax papers!"

That being said, I still HAD to check spoilers, because the omenpath versions for arena make it so much easier to just proxy a universes within card. But ... so far I haven't seen a card that really has to make it into my cube. The bar is just higher for when I can't use the real card.

I really can't wait for both, Avatar and Lorwyn, so things will get better soon for me and it's not about UB in general. But I had to say it once:

FUCK MARVEL

Sorry.

the first guy to make fun of him is gonna get shocked almost to death, the second guy to make fun of him is gonna get shocked almost to death, etc

given that they did a spiderman pointing meme and all, I'm kind of sad we didn't get a "me and the boys" stupid meme card too. just the dumbest Electro face imaginable (along with the other three)
