General May 18 Cube - Eric's Draft Recap

I didn't get to play any games during the draft. But I might as well get some use out of that $50 draft recap button that Jason commissioned on drafts.in. Jonas did this for us a few months back, and I had a hoot reading through it, so I figure I would pitch in this time.

So here it is, the draft recap you didn't want and never asked for!

P1P1

A fetchland might be the safe route, but who wants safe. Certainly not me! Noble Hierarch and Kitchen Finks are considerations that would put me into green, while Grave Titan is one of the strongest control finishers in this list. Nothing else really jumps out at me as being first pickable. Maybe it's because I don't get to cube with him in my own list, and maybe it's because I know how dominant he is when unanswered, but I feel inclined to go with the unbeatable token making machine.

P1P2

Wowza. There are a lot more toys to play with here. Dismember is a great removal spell. Deathrite Shaman is a house and can be downright oppressive. Courser of Kruphix is a strong man for any kind of midrange deck. Mulldrifter is a classic control card, though I suspect he's worse in Jason's fast cube environment than in your typical unpowered singleton list. Wolfir Silverheart beats down like no other, but he doesn't jive with our first pick as much as the other cards. In the interests of staying open and picking a versatile card, I figure Deathrite is even more likely to make our deck than GravyT, no matter where we end up.

P1P3

Here's where we make a stand. Aggressive zombie Gravecrawler action, or midrange Birthing Pod shenanigans? Even at this early juncture, I've already abandoned any pretense of drafting a control deck, so I have to admit I don't remember seeing cards like Nevinyrral's Disk. The zombie archetype is probably still the best deck in Jason's cube, and two crawlers in the same pack is a strong signal, but my personal biases have me leaning towards getting some mileage out of that Grave Titan.

P1P4

Immediately, we're greeted with another Gravecrawler, but by passing two in the last pack, I feel like I've let that ship sail. On the Pod side, though, there are all sorts of goodies. Abyssal Persecutor, Lifebane Zombie, Perilous Myr, and Voice of Resurgence are all considerations. I'm not Dougggg, so I don't even consider the Kiki-Jiki, because there's no way I can pilot the Kiki-Pod deck with his level of razor-sharp precision. Lifebane has a strong comes-into-play effect and is on colour, even though Voice of Resurgence is probably the better card overall for this archetype. There's also a Bloodstained Mire, but I barely even notice it while swimming in these riches.

P1P5

This pack is considerably less exciting when we're looking to fill out our Pod chain. In the absence of good, poddable creatures, my eyes are drawn to the cheap spells, Inquisition of Kozilek and Tragic Slip. I'm not sure which one is correct here, and I err on the side of removal, figuring that morbid will be easy to trigger with Pod activations. In retrospect, I think the discard spell would've been more valuable.

P1P6

Man. Why them packs gotta break like this? There are multiple excellent creatures for our deck here, but this late in the pack, it's unlikely anything of value will wheel. Avenger of Zendikar is a superb green finisher, but my concern again is that it's a mite slow for this environment. The pick then comes down to Nekrataal and Wall of Roots. As badly as I want the ETB kill creature, I figure that my deck will be choked on mana, and that picking up the accelerator will be for the best. I also don't have any two-drops, yet, so it helps fill out that spot on the chain.

P1P7

Good news! It looks like no one's fighting us over this archetype. There isn't a whole lot to see here, so picking up the second Pod is academic.

P1P8

Hello! That's a signal. Welp, at least we're in the right archetype. As good a removal spell as Go for the Throat is, it would be criminal to pass Primeval Titan at this point. Massacre Wurm is also a consideration, but I feel like the Titan has more potential, especially with the utility land draft to come. Also, is that a Lightning Bolt...?

P1P9

A lot of aggro red cards are coming back, but having passed all those Gravecrawlers, it wouldn't make much sense to jump in now. Even though we might not have the best shell for a 2/1 can't block creature, Bloodghast can at least be a reusable body to start Pod chains.

P1P10

The removal spell made it back!

P1P11

Geez, all that red removal. Still, I haven't seen a lick of fixing so far, so I feel wary about branching out. Gravecrawler might not attack in this deck a lot, but like his cousin Bloodghast, we could use him in a Pod.

P1P12

A two-drop, and a great Poddable one at that! This is our lucky day.

P1P13

I don't think we'll run it because of the speed of the format, but Phyrexian Arena might be a worthwhile sideboard card.

P1P14

This is working out.

P1P15

Doin' it.

P2P1

There are a number of decent poddable creatures here - Flametongue Kavu and Blade Splicer leap to the front - but fixing has been curiously scarce thus far. There's also three dual lands (!), all blue, and none of which we're interested in. Seeing as the zombie horde hasn't been fought over this draft, there's a chance Geralf's Messenger will wheel. But I also don't think I'd play anything else out of this pack, so I figure it's not worth the risk to send it around, however small that risk might be.

P2P2

Bob! My best buddy Bob. Boy, I really want that Bob. Yet I know I have two six-drops already.. and my deck won't win any awards for speed. The considerations then turn to Kitchen Finks and Vorapede. While I like the idea of chaining a huge five-drop into a monster six-drop, I feel like the stabilizing body is more important. Hopefully, the {G}{G}{G} casting cost of the 'pede will scare away other players enough that it'll come back.

P2P3

Hmmmm. How well does Vengevine work in a Pod deck? After thinking about this for far too long, I come to the conclusion of "probably not that well". There isn't a whole lot here again, but a removal spell will suffice.

P2P4

Woooo. A seven-drop! I admittedly get distracted by the shiny Myr Battlesphere here, and spend less time than I should deliberating this pick. Because I can honestly say I barely remember the Birds of Paradise being here. Looking back, that or Misty Rainforest was probably the right call, given the sad state of fixing in my deck to this point. But... a man can have his vices, no?

P2P5

Green Sun's Zenith has me wondering how effective it'll be in my deck configuration, until I tell myself that I can't really dilute my precious spell slots with utility cards like this, no matter how good they might be. I don't have a strong lineup of green creatures to work with, either, and passing up that Birds is feeling more painful now. At least it would be, if I'd even known that I'd passed one. The big, fat lifegainer in Obstinate Baloth is the next best choice by default, even though he durdles harder than LSV on a slow summer afternoon.

.

P2P6

Well, that Joraga Treespeaker looks enticing, even if it's a pure ramp card, and can't fix my mana. And certainly not for, say, a Geralf's Messenger. Hmmm. Growth Spasm merits a once-over, but it's not a creature for Pod, and, as with most three-mana ramp spells, is somewhat unwieldy.

P2P7

Oh dear Lord. Fixing. On colour. Hallelujah! It's a miracle! There's a Bone Shredder here too, but I pay it no mind.

P2P8

Good God do I want that Lingering Souls. All those bodies. All that value. I think for a long while trying to justify drafting it to myself, before I eventually snap out of it. With my pitiful collection of one fixing land to date, a white splash is probably not in my best interests. The Skinrender is perfectably Poddable, though, and has a relevant creature type if we choose to start Gravecrawler.

P2P9

The Blade Splicer came all the way back - as big a surprise to me as any - but I still feel like it's a trap to step into a third colour at this juncture. I take the safe route, figuring that if I want to ramp out a Battlesphere and a bunch of Pods, there are worse cards to do that than Edge of Autumn.

P2P10

This is the pack with the Vorapede, right? Awww. So much for that plan. Welp, Pernicious Deed is a great sweep spell for control decks, and it's on colour. This is a decent enough anti-aggro gift.

P2P11

Ramp to the max!

P2P12

Nothing for us here. I hate draft the card I feel is most likely to put a damper on my plans.

P2P13

I can't really complain about cheap removal, especially if it works with Gravecrawlers and Bloodghasts.

P2P14

I like Mac 'n' Cheese. That has nothing to do with any of what's going on, I just need to fill up this space.

P2P15

That man looks aggrieved.

P3P1

Good blue and white cards! Which I'll do my best to ignore. This is actually a pretty disappointing pack, with Bloodstained Mire and Acidic Slime being the viable options. With my fixing being as paltry as it was, I should have employed a bit of discipline and taken the fetchland. Instead, I still had visions of free Grave Titans dancing in my head, and was eager to fill out my five-drop slot to make that dream a reality.

P3P2

An Overgrown Tomb! Done. Slam. Windmall slam.

Except.. I didn't do that. Whoops.

I can't really justify my own thinking here, but I must've felt I needed more one-drops. So I take Deathrite Shaman.. which will be powered up by all of one fetchland. Yeah, sketch. Hey, this is "Drafting with Eric", not "Drafting with Finkel". Solemn Simulacrum is another fine Pod man, but there's no way he's making it back.

P3P3

Murderous Redcap is a perfect Pod target, being a persist four-drop, and a decent anti-aggro measure. There might be other cards that are playable here, but Redcap is miles enough ahead that we don't need to seriously consider them.

P3P4

Yes, friends, that is a Liliana of the Veil pick 4. As a heavy black drafter, it's very hard to justify passing her.. but I allow my eyes to wander. Eternal Witness is another great Pod target, while Shriekmaw lets us interact in the early game while being a great five-drop for Pod. This is a tough choice, and one I debate for a while. I figure I need another five-drop for my chain, and tell myself that it's still castable early, so I ultimately go with the Shriekmaw.

P3P5

There's a Huntmaster of the Fells, and a Blood Crypt.. but awkwardly enough, they're in the same pack. Varolz is in my colours, but isn't really what we're looking for in our game plan. I figure the Blood Artist might work well with a steady diet of daily sacrifices. (Somehow, though, during deckbuliding, I completely overlook the Blood Artist and forget that it exists, not even listing it in my sideboard.)

P3P6

Hello zombies! It's at this point that I realize I've been sitting in the seat for the nut BR zombie deck all day long. It's weird, because I feel like my seat is also capable of assembling a decent enough BG Pod machine - but anyone's who played a cube with quad Gravecrawler and double Carrion Feeder can attest to the deck's power. Anyways, back on track. This pack doesn't have a whole lot to offer, and the Phyrexian Reclamation catches my eye. Except, again, that it's not a creature. Strangleroot Geist is a fine undying body, even though I'm starting to worry about my mana situation, and how I'll cast a {G}{G} card alongside a {B}{B}{B} one. Oh well. There's always time to fix that later. (Right.)

P3P7

Well, well, well. How.. inconvenient. Two Birthing Pods stacked together. Though, in truth, four is probably entirely too many for a cube deck, and even three may be pushing it. Still, I take it because I'm knee-deep in ETB and value creatures at this point. My personal bias against one-mana discard spells means I skip over Thoughtseize without pause, even though, looking back now, having that and an Inquisition of Kozilek could've given me more early interaction.

P3P8

I may be averse to one-mana discard, but even I can't ignore two-mana double random discard. It helps that there's nothing else worthwhile in the pack, so the late Hymn to Tourach is a welcome sight.

P3P9

My pack comes back, littered to the brim with unplayables. I hate draft the Sudden Demise that could wipe out my carefully constructed Pod chain.

P3P10

My small hope of wheeling the Overgrown Tomb is summarily crushed. Is Nest Invader remotely Poddable...? I'm not sure, but I take it so that I can find out. Yeah. Right.

P3P11

Spellskite isn't an ideal Pod creature, but he's still a great blocker and removal eater.

P3P12

Is that a super late Falkenrath Aristocrat? Ughhhh I'm in the wrong deck. Well, Snuff Out is removal, even if I don't like the idea of losing more life while packing triple Pod.

P3P13

Smell the hate.

P3P14

Yes, yes, don't remind me. I could've had them all.

P3P15

In the utility land draft, I was hoping against hope for a Volrath's Stronghold, as I felt that would make my deck sing. Unfortunately, I was behind one Jason Waddell, who happened to be in the same colour combination as us, and nabbed it with his first pick. If I could editorialize for a moment: if there's a single utility land that deserves to be promoted to the main draft, Stronghold is it, in my opinion. It's a card I would happily have spent one of my forty-five picks on, and I'd much rather see the card legitimately fought over alongside all the powerful spells, rather than losing out on it to random utility draft order.

Okay, back down from my soapbox. I end up with these four picks:

Mutavault might not do a lot of bashing in the red zone, but is a zombie for Gravecrawler, if we're still on that plan. Temple of Malady was a card I was hoping to take in the third round, but again, those plans were foiled by one Mr. Waddell. The fixing in this deck is a little.. suspect.

I ended up with this build:

And when Calvin took a look, he restructured the deck to focus less on the singular game plan of Birthing Pods, instead relying on value creatures to eventually go big:

Jeez, that took far too long to write up. Tell me where my picks went wrong, or how you would've built the deck differently from the card pool. And then.. I'll happily ignore it and draft horribly the next time again!

Ugh, I mean I get the sense you're just trying to be an asshole. Maybe the schtick is getting super old. Like, you just pretend you're right if you're arrogant enough about it. Evasive Action successfully countered shit all day in a goddamn Post deck, so I'm not really sure what you need.

p2p2 WHY OH WHY are there multiple kitchen finks

I think this just about sums up why I could never run Birthing Pod in my own list. While double Kitchen Finks and double Shriekmaw don't impact the metagame too much in Jason's cube, they would throw the balance out of whack in mine. I feel like Jason's list has enough powerful stuff going on that three mana value creatures aren't the be-all-and end-all. On the flip side, too many of them in my lower-powered environment would turn every matchup into a grindy, attrition-based midrange-fest.

Ok Eric wants me to post my comments here to compensate the hours it took him to type that up. Just to be clear, Eric asked for useful feedback so I hope I don't come off as mean.

p1p4. I don’t like this pick, i think i would've taken the BR fetch (maybe even the bomb myr)
p1p6 not sure why you decided you were green, i like nighthawk or nekrataal since you're basically a monoblack deck with some value later
p1p8....so confused, i would've slammed any of the black cards since my only 'green' cards by then are two pods and a deathrite..
and continue to scoop up all the black to finish pack 1. I don’t think you saw much green to jump into.

p2p1 would probably slot easily into FTK then... (since the messenger usually wheels)
p2p2 then you can take bob...and i think i'm solid black midrange with possibiilty for green/red splash (most of the cards in this pack are fine though, since you can still easily be red in my draft)
-double green finks is super greedy
p2p4 –definitely should’ve been the Bop with what you had, but battlesphere still slotted pretty well into your final list.
p2p5 – based on what you took so far, your manabase is disgusting…all your green cards are double green and you have triple and double black cards
p2p10,12,15 –should be in red…
p2p13 - undying evil is surprisingly good with all your persist guys, titans and friends. Also innocent blood is better in decks that don’t want to play creatures early (not you :p)

p3p1 – remember what I said about all those double green cards? I would’ve taken the fetch again.
p3p5 – this is awkward….I like crypt or huntmaster
p3p6 – all the double green cards with no fixing…this pack is miserable though
p3p7 – 3 is too many with the fragile chain (thoughtseize isn’t that much better though)
p3p12 – it hurts…

Solid! I love having another perspective on things. I guess it's pretty clear that B/R or B/R/g were the decks to go into from my seat, with either aggro or midrange as viable options. I only realize now after reading your critique that I could've actually had a decent B/R/g manabase, with three or four relevant fetches, along with a Blood Crypt, a Stomping Ground, and an Overgrown Tomb. But, psh, we all know there's no way I'd be disciplined enough to assemble all that.

yeah, lower power level can come with fewer options too. something like Theros Block Constructed, where there were very few viable cards / archetypes, attests to this. i strive to hit a sweet spot between that and "let's play vintage"

CML: Card's awesome if you like the taste of poo. Lol.

Jason: Gettin' real sick of your shit, CML...

Predicted response: Obviously not cuz you're still eating it by cubing that crap!

No idea who that could be, but I'd like to take a moment to find out if it's just me and my friends, or does everyone seem to look at Rich Hagon and think that there's a chance Jabba the Hutt reproduced?

Oh man, that's just mean. The guy isn't even that overweight. Also, he seems like a nice enough person to hang around with if you ask me.

It isn't even a look or weight issue. Something about him just disgusts everyone I know, including me. Like secretly, he could be this disgusting dungeon ogre hiding in a bodysuit stitched together from the parts of babies and the elderly. The world may never know...

More importantly, how the fuck did he land a job commentating on big events for MtG? I find him unbearably annoying. His ability to juggle does perplex me, though...it's quite impressive.

I have a high tolerance for positive vibes and smiles, maybe that's why he doesn't annoy me?

My friend convinced me to listen to a recent interview with him because he out of nowhere talks about how he self harms and it's really dark and honest. I can't believe someone so seemingly vulnerable and on edge would open up like that to the community of magic players, like is there a worse thing you could do than tell the derisive clods who like to make fun of your work that you have a habit of taking it out on yourself? That guy became a way more interesting character to me. Life is so weird I was uncomfortable for the most of that podcast and I loved it.

I wonder how his wife takes it all.

That Ronald McDonald pic is gold!

NOW DON'T RUIN IT BY TELLING ME ABOUT HIS DEPRESSION ISSUES, IT'LL MAKE ME FEEL GUILTY FOR THE YEARS OF GOOD LAUGHS I'VE HAD AT HIS EXPENSE!!!
