General Alchemy, Playtest, Funny and other strange cards

Tons of likes, but no comments! What do you think? Are you running any of these funky cards? Tempted about it? Let me know!

General Alchemy, Playtest, Funny and other strange cards

There are a bunch of pseudo-official cards that can be run in our cubes but that we rarely do. Perhaps they are part of the Un sets, the digital-only Alchemy sets or those funky playtest cards. While the quality of these sets is pretty low, particularly Alchemy, there are still some cards that...

Sets [DMH] Duskmourn: House of Horror

This is perfect. Call of the Herd has been oudated for years, but you felt obligated to run it to give green some extra graveyard support. It could be a bit repetitive, but given its cost, I doubt doing it over and over again will be the best way to spend your mana. I had no expectations for...

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

It's extremely powerful, probably the best blue finisher. Unless it's killed in the spot, it will run away with the game. Note that it draws enough cards to justify reanimating or cheating it into play somehow. Even if it's eventually killed or you have to 2 for 1 yourself, you come out ahead...

Sets [DMH] Duskmourn: House of Horror

I'm not sure how good Irreverent Gremlin is, in the right deck it can act as a discount Smuggler's Copter. Does it trigger with tokens? I agree that Silent Hallcreeper is perfect for Ninjas, I like the fact that it draws a card immediately and that you have to think about whether to give it...

Sets [MB2] Mystery Booster 2 previews

Like previous Mystery Booster sets, the cards are so close to being great. They are in this limbo where they are too unrefined to play as is, but too challenging to the status quo to be printed. I'm curious about the lands and associated trickery: Ominepresent Impostor, Gobland, Madlands...

    Nanonox's 1vs1 cube

Armaggedon works, the problem is that it's just too esay. It's not even that good, just easy. The single {W} mana makes it easy to splash and some decks have no recourse against it. Regarding the "classics", you are not wrong. In practice, all spell-matters cards are anti-synergetic with...

    General Riptide's P1P1 Thread

Here's a strange one from my cube: Wight of the Reliquary Yawghmoth's Will Entomb Parallax Tide Legion Extruder Lion's Eye Diamond Smokestack Kari Zev, Skyship rider Six Enlightened Tutor Verdurous Gearhulk Luminarch Aspirant Gingerbrute Kitsa, Otterball Elite I can see this pick being more...

Prismatic Vista. Fixing is extremely valuable, particularly a 5-colour land. The other two standouts to me are Mana Leak, which is very close, and, at a larger distance, Nature's Lore. 1) Prismatic Vista 2) Mana Leak >>>> 3) Nature's Lore If this were a higher-powered cube, which you can tell...

Erik's "The cool side of Magic" cube

It helps, but I can't shake the feeling that getting a bit of combo-like value at the end is worth less than having a piece of interaction. That is, you win less by putting Scapeshift in your deck than by Bitter Triumph. I agree it's fun, though, I just find it too wonky at the moment. Other...

Erik's "The cool side of Magic" cube

I've been busy with writing, work and housekeeping so I'm in no rush to get my cube out. I took the chance to add some new stuff and do polishing: Emperor of Bones Nethergoyf Stormchaser's Talent Faithless Looting I also decided to try the combo lands deck Minox has been trying: Squandered...

    Nanonox's 1vs1 cube

Rrun two copies of Lotus Field, there's no reason not to duplicate if it's what you need. I love Land Tax because it opens a ton of unique decks, like low-curve RW control or Tax Rack midrange.

    General Fight Club

Master has a ton of text, Nightpack Ambusher is very good and promotes a unique theme (Flash). Both are a bit dumb. A-Symmetry Sage Stormchaser's Talent Note that it's A-Symmetry Sage, not the original. What's your pick?

    Nanonox's 1vs1 cube

That deck truly gave me hope for a potential, non-parasitic land combo archetype. I didn't think it would be so viable. It relies heavily on Fastbond, but it does have multiple outs and can play a normal game, too. In fact, the only narrow card in that list is Squandered Resources, everything...

    General (BLB) Bloomburrow Spoilers

YES! This has been a long time coming. I know Safra has a version of this called "Pick up the Wrong fight", that has rebound and creates a monk prowess token. This is worse, because the flashback is too expensive, but it's worth a try.

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

I feel Young Pyromancer is an absolute staple, as are similar cards like it (The Raven Man, Springheart Nantuko, etc.). The problem, like Nanonox says, is that it doesn't trigger on non-creatures only instant/sorceries. The spells deck is hard to draft because you need both creatures and spells...

    Nanonox's 1vs1 cube

Simulacrum Synthethizer is a cool design but it plainly did not work in my cube. There just aren't enough high cost artifacts and, if you do try to force it, you just end up with an unplayable curve. I'll probably cut it at some point, and see if I can fit something else instead.

So what's the deal with Sail into the West? Isn't it just a discard your hand/draw 7? Do people run it because Timetwister and Windfall are too cheap?

Erik's "The cool side of Magic" cube

Right now, there are only four cards I feel bad about in my cube. My plan is to replace them and see if I can print proxies to play in two weeks. Suggest me some fun stuff in green and 1 blue card to replace this: Ancient Stirrings Edge of Autumn Primal Command Simulacrum Synthesizer

    Nanonox's 1vs1 cube

This is absolutely true, and ,indeed, a widespread problem in game design. After all, the easiest way to balance a game is by making it dull. For me the telltale sign of a card being bad for my cube is being forced to take it even when it's not fun. It's like drafting power, you see a Mox Jet...
