    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

Thank you everyone. I was still willing to believe in By Gnome Means but the hexproof counter does make it slightly uglier. Is there a sane solution? I really like the card but I hate the idea of handing the players a piece of paper and saying "so these are the counters you're allowed to use."

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

By Gnome Means Is this absolutely unreasonable with the new Ikoria counters? It's already kind of unreasonable with +2/+2 counters, etc... And I suppose you could always make a list of allowed keywords or go by what the cards in your cube refer to. Has anyone tried it?

General Embrace the Chaos / Cube Occasionals

This is a great and - hoping I don't sound too dramatic - urgent thought. It slots itself into the timeless (recurring) discussion around the value of Serendipity, which we seem to always forget and then rediscover. In the Humanities I'm watching it happen right now, as people realise naively...

I also dislike that, so I'll share my Gallia custom : )

    General Tap/untap Archetype

Thanks everyone, those are great suggestions and seeing all of the cards together made realise how wide you can go with this "theme" and how well it already plays into some other strategies I had planned. And I can't believe I had missed Intruder Alarm. Stonybrook Schoolmaster is really cool...

    General Tap/untap Archetype

I cannot figure out whether this can work, whether it makes any sense. I wanted to have a tap/untap archetype that would flow nicely into different strategies in all five colours. In red you have the pingers such as Cunning Sparkmage as well as Kurkesh, Onakke Ancient, Ghirapur Aether Grid...

General How to execute a minimalist Artifact theme

Since I have a discard theme I'm also running this guy: Mindless Automaton Then I have the Changeling utility cards that Scrapyard Recombiner can pick up: Nameless InversionCrib SwapChangeling Outcast You won't want to tutor for outcast many times, but he also acts as a good ninjutsu target.

General How to execute a minimalist Artifact theme

Onderzeeboot that looks great! It's really funny, though, since I have been, since yesterday, typing up a new cube blog which started precisely from the same group of cards: UB ninjas/saboteurs with an artifact strategy, and leading into a discard/self-mill theme. What made me laugh was that I...

    General Dimir Saboteurs

You know what, this is precisely why you should talk to people. After some auto analysis, I concluded that my reaction derived mostly from seeing the word Horsemanship! In my mind I just threw it into a mental drawer together with Invisible Stalker. But you are absolutely correct. I still...

    General Dimir Saboteurs

The thing that bugs me about Lu Xun is that he basically just hangs around until the opponent has a removal spell. I will always favour conditional - or circumstantial - unblockability, but even in the case of Looter il-Kor the ability is about filtering and not just card drawing. You need...

    General Dimir Saboteurs

I've been working a new cube and started precisely with a broad set of ideas that all center around the possibility of building Dimir Saboteurs/Ninjas. But, since I love Whirler Rogue, I decided that the deck could go the traditional ninja route (with plenty of the cards that people in the...

    General CBS

I suppose it depends on how the games play on your cube but as a fan of strange ways to twist a regular Magic game into other things I find this very very interesting. Except I would make it so that you take the cards you drafted from the Isochron Scepter draft and make a little deck so the...

    General Old Standard Formats

I was about to jump in to say exactly that. For all that the community suggests (and some suggestions do seem insightful or wise) it must be very hard to just depart from a blank piece of paper instead of a finished product that you just get to criticise. And they've managed to keep me...

    General Old Standard Formats

Yeah I knew I remembered it from some top 8 so I was wondering whether that was the case. And the format did have its issues and, if we look at it as a form of inspiration or guideline for where the game should go, a huge untranslatability problem that results from a decade (uf...) having passed...

    General Old Standard Formats

I don't have anything to add except for a thank you for such a good breakdown of those wonderful Kamigawa-Ravnica years. The format had its issues, yes, and certainly some of its particularities are impossible to emulate nowadays: Japan's innovation that sweeped Worlds in 2005 seems to be...

    Card/Deck Low Power Card Spotlight

Would that allow for a sort of crossover from an aggressive WB group of cards into a sort of niche WRB Enduring Ideal list? It's certainly tempting to imagine some kind of controlling game between things like Crippling Fatigue, Read the Bones (or Painful Truths) and the RB Talisman and, while I...

    Card/Deck Low Power Card Spotlight

Thraben Doomsayer is very interesting and made me think of Minions' Murmurs as a way to refill your hand after dropping your cheap creatures while still advancing the life loss plan. Is this a real deck? Go-wide Suicide WB? The card advantage engines are certainly interesting: Pain Seer is a...
