General Emotional Spikes in Cube Design

Let me try to respond to this again, as it warrants some further discussion, and I have a bit more time. The idea that cards/interactions being one sided on the positive end (cards that result in "feel bads" in this forums parlance) being sufficient reason for a cut, isn't really true. Emotion...

General Emotional Spikes in Cube Design

I'm not following you. The thread is about the way that emotional resonance impacts decision making, and framing it as whether or not to run channel -> emrakul is far too narrow. The more nuanced discussion we had yesterday about why to run or not run brainstorm is more where we should be, or...

General Emotional Spikes in Cube Design

Titania seems like a really cool "combo" card. It has some other interactions that I really like: Knight of the reliquary edge of autumn zuran orb Thats not too bad density at 360, and you can grab zuran orb with trinket mage, and green has a bunch of fun tutor effects to find titania...

General Emotional Spikes in Cube Design

I don't think its actually too bad. We have a lot of users here with cards that are polarizing or which get them excited. A couple examples Desecration Demon Abyssal Persecutor fact or fiction gifts ungiven impulse ponder jace beleren All of those mini-game cards are pretty cool. I...

General Emotional Spikes in Cube Design

For example, and to sort of bring this back down to earth, in the middle of playing on Saturday, I started to wonder why I hadn't opted to run these two cards: Mana Tithe Force Spike These are both simple cards that create giant emotion spikes: the excitement of hitting some critical spell...

General Emotional Spikes in Cube Design

A lot to unpack, so I'll have to get to some of the other posts later, but wanted to single this out. What I encountered was that trying to emphasis fairness just ended up being a downward spiral. I'm sure there is some half-way point, but basically, if you cut one layer of "unfair" cards...

General Emotional Spikes in Cube Design

Normally, when we talk about cube design, we come at it from the perspective that technical complexity and balance should be the end result of a "well designed" cube. I've begun to wonder if this isn't largely nonsense, or at least, substantially self-deceptive. In one of my numerous...

General Elegance in cube card selection

I think "repeatable heroic trigger" is the "pitches to force" of low power formats. :p Maybe this is not the slot to be looking for complexity, and sigh was right about pacifism

Sets Shadows over Innistrad Spoilers Thread

Basically, seasons past is a fun, and unique, card to cast in its color, while ever after is just another value reanimator card. This is one of those arguments that has very little to do with the actual effectiveness of the cards, and more with the emotional spikes that the cards trigger.

General Elegance in cube card selection

Interesting note from last night concerning this card. Prison Term This is a very popular card on this board for the technical play decisions it elicits, but it has a long history of people forgetting about the trigger, which was an issue again last night.

    Card/Deck Low Power Card Spotlight

Yeah, impulse is a great card, but if you have access to the other options you shouldn't be picking it over them.

    Card/Deck Low Power Card Spotlight

I would 100% recommend impulse. The design is great, but its unfortunately been left behind by power creep. I would try serum visions, impulse, and probably think twice. Telling time has been reasonable as well, but its clearly far lower power than the other mentioned cards.

    Card/Deck Low Power Card Spotlight

Brainstorm is massively overrated. Tier 1 is ponder/ preordain, tier 2 is brainstorm/serum visions/ tier 3 is impulse/think twice (in terms of power/narrowness). Brainstorm ranking is for formats where some of the time its being EOT cast due to fetch scarcity. If your group has an emotional...

    General Fight Club

Exactly: the main problem with those cards is that they either can't, or struggle, to proactively do anything, and in a cube world increasingly geared towards casting efficiency (see ETB arguments), paying 3 or more mana into plays that struggle to immediately impact the board state (or doesn't...

What a weird discussion between Ulvenvald mysteries and evolutionary leap. Ulvenvald mysteries can't compete with evo leap in terms of raw mana efficiency. Even in those mana constrained scenarios, evo leap performs better, because it requires less overall mana investment to function. The fact...

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

I think the key thing for the deck is the ability to suddenly produce power and toughness, which only a handful of cards do well. Cards like wonder, wolfir silverheat, control magic, become immense and mistfire adept (at their respective power levels) can suddenly produce an immense amount of...
