    Card/Deck Spirits

Right, but Akroan skyguard has been on my cut list for forever because the floor is so bad. I complain a lot about the heroic cards and how disappointing the mechanic has been in the penny thread. We are all free to explore bad ideas, but I like to think actual testing results carries some...

    Card/Deck Spirits

I know you guys don't like being told that something doesn't work, but I ran this for about a year: there is not even enough density for a sub theme. These are your total payoff cards that are not poisonous: angel of flight alabaster tallowisp rattlechains The floor on angel of flight...

    Card/Deck Spirits

All of those cards suffer from the poison principle. Your cubable "lord count" than ends up being rattlechains, tallowisp, and angel of flight alabaster. Angel of flight alabaster is a bad serra angel most of the time, and tallowisp is pretty loose. Even as an "incidental tribe," spirit...

    Card/Deck Spirits

I've tried this: it was bad. Not enough enablers concentrated in the right colors, and not enough generically good payoff cards to justify an A + B mechanic. The payoff cards are so weak, it doesn't really exist as an incidental theme.

    [Design/Discussion] The Spiral

Sorry for the lack of activity: lots of real world projects. Call of the bloodline, molten vortex, and stormbind are cards we aren't really looking for atm, because they are narrow discard outlets (they are A + B cards). We would want to start with cards that offer a foundational effect...

Card/Deck Start your Engines: A Temur Card Advantage Deck

It just is that 6-7cc spells/creatures that grant incremental advantage seem like they would feel more authentic in environments where the game is going to go on another 6-7 turns. Sometimes a card can still be playable, but not really be playable in the satisfying manner it was intended to...

    General Fight Club

I kind of want to get a little more context for the comparison: Reach of branches Spider Spawning Worm Harvest These are all pretty low power cards. I've never found spider spawning to be very impressive, even within the context of a lower power graveyard format, with some power spikes...

    General Fight Club

I would expect spawning to wheel because its more specialized, and the floor is kind of meh if you have high powered cards running around at the same time. Reach doesn't have to worry about color combinations or deck synergy. We really don't see spider spawning here as the more speculative...

    General Fight Club

I'm actually not sure these cards should be being placed against one another. Reach of branches is a solid value play, while spider spawning reminds me a lot of mystical teachings in my own cube (and I would recommend putting it in G/B). I also do think there is a reasonable power level...

    The Penny Pincher Cube (360)

Yeah, I don't think downgrading Archaeomancer to scrivener is the answer either. The culprit is probably the power level of the ETBs coupled with blink effects, making your midrange strategies a bit broken. To quote: Control under contemporary mtg design has a lot of obstacles: recursive...

Card/Deck Start your Engines: A Temur Card Advantage Deck

To comment on these cards: gnaw to the bone I love gnaw to the bone even more than I love crypt incursion. These are polarizing effects though because they feel kind of like spell based threats in a control or midrange deck. If you have control tools, and can stabilize against aggro or...

    [Design/Discussion] The Spiral

Yes, yes, this is much closer. I want to see how far we can creatively push the idea. I would like it to be where you start out in a color pair with a horizontal range of X/Y archetypes/subarchetypes, but the initial tacked on synergy can open the door to something completely bizarre. Maybe...

    The Penny Pincher Cube (360)

Blink is an incredibly powerful interaction type, and I would hesitate to ever really claim it balanced. Its always something that I feel I should be conscious of, especially giving the lack of being able to give any project I do to a testing team to professionally try to break it (and even...

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

Its been eons since tc was in my list, and even longer since I wrote down deck lists. It went out during the first depowering of blue, after posting in the p1p1 thread and realizing that way too many of my blue cards were first or second picks. I don't think its good testing methodology to run...

    [Design/Discussion] The Spiral

No, it isn't at all. This is the absolute simplest way I can describe it: Jason ran janky cards when he would encourage themes. The best example of that was the lifegain theme that he wrote about (bolding mine). We would never run narrow archetype anchors, because our cards are all...

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

As much as I appreciate the back and forth, I feel like we are getting wildly off topic. The intricacies of pauper vs. rare formats seems like a deflection, as is assessing whether TC or DTT is stronger. You seem to be trying to draw some distinguishment between TC in pauper and TC in other...

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

Well, this thread exploded Theres a couple things to untangle here. This looks like a negative and a positive canceling one another out. ;) That being said, the argument that TC is better in low powered formats vs. DTT can very easily be disproven. The reason that I mentioned pauper...

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

Thats because its not a point that goes to the inherent fairness of either card, its an ancillary color balance concern.

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

err...I don't know if thats ever really been true. At the least I think its a lot more nuanced than focusing on 6 mana ETB monsters or planeswalkers. TC would be just as broken in 1994 as it is today, for the exact same reasons: it puts you ahead on both card advantage and tempo. That was...
