UB Pyschatog Control vs Mono Black Game 1: UB on the play, T1 Duress. I should take Necropotence but I’m very worried about Smokestack. Wrong choice as you’ll see shortly. BB rips Hymn to Tourach off the top. T1 carrion feeder. UB Dark Confidant. BB hymn, make UB discard some land. Not a big...

I think fiend is better specifically because it can take any non-land card. The sacrifice / permanent exile aspect isn't that big of a deal to me as it rarely comes up. Fiend is mostly a tempo play and a way to see what your opponent has planned to help you sequence your next turns better...

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

The key component that makes Form of the Dragon to me personally is the fact that it sets your life to 5 each turn. This isn't a card that makes the race farther the more turns it's in play. You are sulfuric vortexing yourself in a way. And your opponent doesn't need to remove it to beat you...

I'm assuming you are already running Dark Confidant and/or his weaker buddies? Here's stuff I like. Oona's Prowler or Heir of Falkenrath - I actually like heir better, but I cut it when I cut Delver. I dislike DFC mechanically when playing with real cards. Discard outlet and beater in one...

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

I don't think it compares well to Lab Maniac mechanically. With maniac, you are setting up a combo kill - either it works and you win right there or it does nothing at all. Form of the Dragon locks up the game in many ways and instead of giving you the combo kill right there, it gives your...

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

I've been testing Form of the Dragon heavily. It's definitely fun (IMO anyway). Form is a really powerful effect that isn't super easy to get into play but once it lands it completely changes the dynamics of the game. It presents a bit of a solvable mini-game for your opponent. Against...

RWU Wildfire vs WW RWU did well in the last matchup, let’s see how it handles White Weanie. Two more swaps. Complicate out for Keiga, the Tide Star. Sneak/Feldon/Kamigawa Dragon seems to be what this deck wants so let’s give it more of that. Weathered Wayfarer out for Condemn. Enlightened...

    Retro Combo Cube

RWU Wildfire vs Naya Zoo Unhappy with the RWU deck so I want to keep hammering it and see what other changes are needed. As Foretold disappointed. It might work in Simic as a T2 drop - a bit like an aether vial. For now, it comes out. Replacing it with Complicate for now but that slot is...

That's the objection my group had to it. I didn't push it because I totally get it - my interest was purely as a designer. But from a drafting experience, it would improve things mechanically. For the same reason limited environments are almost always much better when they are focused on a set...

Yup. White is the most expendable color. And I think a cube without it would play amazingly well too. Imagine how much space it would free up? You get to cut 1/5 of your fixing. Gold cards become less narrow. Drafts would be better. You'd need to make sure your group was down with this...

RBW Miracle Sacrifice vs UWR Wildfire Combo So the Mardu deck got more focused. I cut the Sneak Attack combo and moved more into sacrifice. I beefed the miracle component a tad as well. UWR is now a bit more about Wildfire. It gains sneak attack and also Feldon/Yosei. So the deck is very...

    Retro Combo Cube

Update: 13 matches completed so far. 78 to go. I'm 1/7 the way through (yippie!). Making a few card swaps. The three color control decks are not very focused. More importantly perhaps, I think they need a little more early game interaction to keep up with the aggressive decks. The changes...

This doesn't shock me TBH. IMO, white has become an extremely uninteresting color in cube. For years now, we have been getting only wrath variants, O-ring effects, more aggro creatures and more 4 mana walkers. And all those slots are now saturated. Until they make white do something else...

I'm not against the general idea of nerfing RDW. In many MTGO cubes, that or some flavor of aggro deck is probably the easiest deck to draft and win with because the support is (IMO anyway) a bit over the top in many cases. There are pages and pages of discussion all over the place about the...

Found a link on cubetutor to the MTGO modern cube. http://www.cubetutor.com/viewcube/20920 Assuming that's accurate, I can see why people hate it. Average CMC is 3.4. 42 walkers (almost 8% of the cube) - basically every pack you open will have one. Zero restraint on top end creatures...

Dimir Psychatog Control vs Elves! Elves is technically a midrange deck, so in theory Dimir has the advantage if traditional Roshambo holds true here (control > midrange > aggro > control). I think the Elf deck is sweet though and it does have combo elements to it (plus I think Roshambo in cube...

    Retro Combo Cube

UR Spells vs UWR Firemane Control The UR Spells deck seems more focused, so that is what I think will come out on top here. My 3 color decks are proving to be more hot mess than sweet tech. But let's see what happens... Game 1: Both decks trade early turns with counters and removal. UR...

Again, for me it comes down to how much you want a drafter to commit. Into the Roil is not a commitment. It goes in any blue deck and any archetype. Snap does not. It sucks outside tempo but it's great in that strategy. Perilous Journey is more snap than into the roil. And I can see a lot...

I'm thinking penny pincher or just above that. So pretty far below the average rare list. Into the Roil I'm pretty sure is too good there since bouncing something expensive and drawing a card is a massive tempo hit. Reflector Mage for example is utterly broken at that power level.
