General Personal Cube Staples, AKA Chicken Soup for the Cube Curator's Soul

I know I've been teasing a cube update for a month or so, not that I'm egocentric enough to think that anyone is waiting with bated breath for me to post it, but the process of reviewing my cube sketches has helped me realize that I have a couple fistfuls of cards that I always like to build...

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

Cycling lands are also approximately 10 cents each on TCGPlayer, so I think there's very little downside to grabbing 20 of each and calling it a day. The sleeves are probably a greater cost at that point.

Speaking as someone who has recently jumped from 30 to 60 fixing lands, I can report that it's definitely made a huge difference in how my (solo, bot-enabled) drafts have gone. I'm not sure it's been entirely for the better, and my data is definitely skewed by how the CubeCobra bots will gobble...

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

@Jason Waddell can we get a new emoji like:edh:but saying "it depends on your environment?" On topic, I do like looting werewolf as a 'funisher' card in that it dies to an aggressive sneeze but incentivizes interaction. It worries me how good it is--just transforming into a 2/1 unlockable...

    Card/Deck Single Card Spotlight

Jumping back to the Beeble, it's too close to randomly getting color hosed for me. However, if you cross out the "as it was cast" bit and draft with a pair of these bad boys on the table . . .

    General Custom Cards: The Lab

I love pain lands, so B for me. Meaningful choices are tasty, and getting an untapped triland seems pretty dang good. I'm a bit fan of the cycling trilands too.

[500] CCC - Casual Champions Cube

Cosmos Elixir is kind of like Elixir of Immortality in that it's an alternate win con for control decks but has the small upside of actually being fun. All joking aside, I think it's a really useful card to have in your environment if you need to buff control decks. It provides value...

I actually don't think that turning off counterspells is a downside as a designer, though, as it makes her harder to turn into a removal bot, which is the main reason I don't run Kess. Ideally this would mean that you're stuck casting cantrips or other cool things. However, this is probably me...

Right, I didn't see the once per turn bit. Thanks! That makes me not want to run it anymore.

Kess, Dissident Mage Lier, Disciple of the Drowned So, okay, I think we just talked about Kess a little while ago and people brought up that she's basically a removal check, but does Lier function any differently? I've not tried Lier, but I feel that weirdly enough by keeping the card out of...

So, they look really nice on Arena, and I think that they just overestimated the capabilities of their printer. When you look at the physical versions next to the images on a screen, they look nothing alike because the backlit white is so much more vibrant than the printed white--plus, the...

And then there's Balduvian Trading Post, where they'll yell at you if you actually discuss A or B instead of suggesting K.

Oh man, the Aurochs deck! I picked that one up too. It's funny, I started out life as a RG player, then migrated to WR, and now I'm solidly an Esper boy. Strange the way things turn out.

I want to add the following because I don't think I stressed it enough in my last post: Planeswalkers are actually a really great thing for your environment because you get a lot of the benefits of enchantments without the baggage of them being super hard to deal with. I'd recommend starting...

Honestly, I feel like Chariot is the broken card out of the two of them. We're going to be very sick of it in six months.

As a rule, I don't include planeswalkers that have removal strapped to them. Stuff like Jace, Mirror Mage and Chandra, Acolyte of Flame are pretty safe because you actually have to invest resources to protect them. Even when you do, they're basically enchantments that are a lot more vulnerable...

    Sets (MID) Innistrad: Midnight Hunt

I think that the Opportunist is, weirdly enough, the stronger card even if only because it's a 1/3. If you want to gain this sort of incremental advantage, you want to draw the game out as long as possible, and a 3/2 just doesn't block for beans.

2k is a little too hard for me to swing, so I'll bow out. But it's a sweet collection, no two ways about it, and a screaming good deal to boot.

I'll buck the trend and go with Mox Ruby, if only because Red is likely to have heavier artifact themes. Again, it depends a lot on the context of the cube--if it's synergy-driven, Ruby, assuming that we don't have Kethis, the Hidden Hand loops. If it's power-driven, then yeah, I think that Jet...
