General Re-examining The Basic Land Box

I'm considering going down to 13 card packs and just putting Aether Hubs and Evolving Wilds in the basic land box (or maybe just hand out a fixed number to each player at the end of the draft) just to simplify things for the newer and more casual players I often play with. The tension of...

I'm going to be honest and say that I don't like Trophy Mage's design. Grabbing a 3-drop makes it closer to generic midrange ETB goodstuff rather than a utility tutor (Trinket Mage) that grabs something small or a way to get consistency for your finisher in an artifact based control deck...

Card/Deck Archetype: Bant Spells Tempo - Wizardry in the Woods

Fable probably needs a heavily multicolor cube to work, otherwise you'd need to cast something like 5+ spells to get value out of it. This Metallurgic Summonings seems like it'll be a better card most of the time without being GRBS.

I believe their point is that unless you're super experienced with the cube list that the initial cast of the spell is going to be a blank more often than not. I'm not sure why they put double black in their post - they may have thought there was a mana cost on the flashback? Cube already...

I imagine it depends on how much token production you have in red.

Anyone have experience with building a draft sim cube? I'm thinking seriously about building one for Kaladesh, assuming it plays as well as it looks. Of course, as a hopeless tinkerer, I doubt I'll be able to leave it as a pure environment for too long. I might play a bit with card ratios -...

    Card/Deck Low Power Card Spotlight

I like Court Street Denizen and Ivy Lane Denizen in my loose G/W convoke archetype that rewards building up an army and having token producers. Goldnight Commander and Juniper Order Ranger play in the same space of rewarding putting down creatures, and multiple tokens in particular, in the...

I'd argue that there were plenty of noncreature cards in old-school magic that generated tempo and card advantage. Wrath of God, Moat, and The Abyss were all super efficient means to not only impact the board, but net you cards over your opponent. The Urza's Saga "free" mechanic that you've...

Rise from the Tides Edit: Also, here's an awesome Cat-Pact deck that you could play right now (it technically has a couple Goblin Dark-Dwellers, but it's not close to what I'd think of as a creature-based deck): If these doesn't count then we just disagree on what a noncreature deck can...

I think to move this conversation forward I'd need to see some historical examples of what you're talking about. Most of the powerful noncreature decks I remember from across Magic's history were only possible because Wizards didn't know how to correctly cost mana ramp, card draw, or resource...

In the past twelve months both Rally the Ancestors and Fevered Visions decks have been competitive in Standard, so it's clear that you don't have to use traditional creature beatdown (or be a control deck made to stop them) to have some level of genuine success. We also got a colorshifted Donate...

You can't make "vroom, vroom" noises with equipment, so it's a pretty easy upgrade in my opinion.

I'm usually not a fan of premium cards, whether they're foils or full-arts or whatever, but I have to say that the Kaladesh Inventions definitely catch my eye. I wish they came in non-foil versions.

I think of elegance as solving a hard or complex problem with a simple solution. Cloudblazer is clean design, but it's not really what I'd call elegant. I also wouldn't call it any lazier than the white Nighthawk variant. Lots of players will get excited by this card just because it's a twist on...

Forced symmetry of mechanics across cards in cycles is dumb. They all look like mid-to-low picks as roleplayers in draft.
